Buffer is the best social media scheduling tool for small business owners who want a simple workflow, a genuine free plan, and affordable entry pricing for a few channels. Choose Meta Business Suite for Facebook and Instagram only, Metricool for analytics and multiple brands, Later for visual content, or SocialBee for evergreen recycling.

The right choice depends less on the longest feature list than on your actual publishing workflow. A solo owner posting to two or three networks has different needs from an agency managing several brands, a retailer planning Instagram Reels, or a support team handling comments and customer messages.

Prices and plan details below were checked August 18, 2026. Software pricing, social-network APIs, supported formats, and free-plan limits can change, so verify the linked vendor page before subscribing.

Key takeaways

  • Buffer is the strongest default for most small businesses because its free plan supports up to three channels with 10 scheduled posts per channel, while paid Essentials starts at $5 per channel per month on annual billing.
  • Meta Business Suite is the best no-cost starting point for a business that only needs Facebook Pages and Instagram, but it is not a cross-network scheduler.
  • Metricool is better for analytics, competitor tracking, reports, Google Business Profile, and multiple brands; its current U.S. pricing page shows Starter from $25 per month and Advanced from $67 per month.
  • Later is the better fit for visual Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, Reels, and Stories workflows, with annual-billing prices shown from $18.75 per month for Starter.
  • SocialBee earns its $29-to-$49 monthly entry range when evergreen categories, recurring queues, RSS sources, bulk editing, and recycling save meaningful manual work.
  • Hootsuite and Sprout Social are usually disproportionate for scheduling alone, but their higher prices can make sense for social listening, customer care, governance, advanced reporting, and larger teams.

Which social media scheduling tool is best for a small business?

Buffer is the best overall recommendation for most small businesses. Buffer combines a relatively simple queue, a permanent free tier, major-network support, and per-channel pricing. The free plan connects up to three channels and allows 10 scheduled posts per channel; paid Essentials starts at $5 per channel per month when billed annually, according to Buffer’s pricing page.

That recommendation assumes one brand, a solo owner or small team, and a need to schedule ordinary content across a few networks. Buffer is not automatically the best value once you manage many profiles, need deep reporting, require sophisticated customer-care tools, or publish large amounts of evergreen content.

Business situation Best starting choice Why Main warning
One owner using two or three networks Buffer Simple workflow and a real free plan Paid pricing multiplies by channel
Facebook and Instagram only Meta Business Suite Native Meta workflow with no subscription price established here No broad cross-network scheduling
Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, and other visual channels Later Visual calendar and presentation-focused planning Social-set and per-profile limits matter
Analytics, competitor tracking, and reports Metricool More data-oriented tools and multi-brand support Pricing varies by brand count and billing choice
Evergreen posts and recurring queues SocialBee Categories, sources, recycling, and bulk tools More expensive than a basic scheduler
Listening, inbox management, and customer care Hootsuite or Sprout Social Broader management and monitoring features Entry pricing is high for scheduling alone

What does “best” mean for a small business?

The best scheduler is the tool that handles your required networks and formats at a reasonable total cost without adding unnecessary complexity. A long feature list is not a useful advantage if the tool lacks automatic publishing for your account type, charges for another user, or makes routine posting harder.

Compare each tool using these practical criteria:

  • Total monthly cost: Count channels, profiles, brands, users, seats, billing period, taxes, and add-ons—not only the advertised starting price.
  • Network and profile support: Distinguish Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok, Pinterest, YouTube, X, Threads, and Google Business Profile support, and check whether personal profiles and company Pages are treated differently.
  • Publishing mode: Confirm whether the tool automatically publishes the exact format you need or sends a mobile notification for you to finish publishing.
  • Content workflow: Look for an understandable calendar, post preview, editing, duplication, bulk scheduling, CSV upload, and platform-specific adaptations.
  • Evergreen automation: Recycling and recurring queues can help a content library, but they require review so outdated promotions do not continue publishing.
  • Measurement: Check analytics history, reports, competitor tracking, Google Business Profile data, exports, and whether the metrics match the native networks.
  • Collaboration: Count users, roles, approval stages, client access, comments, and permissions.
  • Community management: A scheduler may include comments, direct messages, or a consolidated inbox, but scheduling never replaces somebody monitoring replies and urgent issues.
  • AI and mobile tools: AI caption generation is useful only if it helps with brand voice, platform-specific editing, alt text, approvals, or asset reuse. A claim that a tool improves reach requires independent evidence that is not established here.

How do Buffer’s plans work?

Buffer is the best default when a business wants the shortest path from writing a post to scheduling it. Buffer’s free tier supports up to three channels, 10 scheduled posts per channel, and one user. Paid Essentials starts at $5 per channel per month on annual billing, while Team starts at $10 per channel per month on annual billing, according to Buffer’s current pricing page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Buffer option Price shown on annual billing Useful limit or feature Best for
Free $0 Up to three channels; 10 scheduled posts per channel; one user Testing a simple solo workflow
Essentials $5 per channel per month Paid channel features and a larger scheduling capacity; paid plans advertise unlimited scheduled posts subject to a fair-use cap of 5,000 posts per channel One owner who needs more than the free queue
Team $10 per channel per month Unlimited team members, access levels, and approval workflows Small teams and client review processes

Buffer’s per-channel model is economical for two or three profiles but becomes less attractive as the profile count rises. For example, two paid channels would be approximately $10 per month on annual Essentials billing, and three paid channels would be approximately $15 per month on annual Essentials billing. Those are illustrative subscription calculations before taxes, add-ons, billing changes, or any plan-specific conditions.

Buffer supports major networks including Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok, Pinterest, YouTube, X, Threads, Bluesky, Mastodon, and Google Business Profile, but network support does not guarantee automatic publishing for every format. Check the exact account and post type before committing.

Choose Buffer if: you manage one brand, want a clear queue, use a small number of channels, and do not need advanced reporting.

Do not choose Buffer by default if: you manage many profiles, need multiple brands with detailed reports, require extensive social listening, or want a specialized evergreen content system.

Which alternatives are better for specific workflows?

Is Meta Business Suite enough for Facebook and Instagram?

Meta Business Suite is usually the best first choice for a business that only uses Facebook Pages and Instagram. The native Meta tool is available as a starting point at Meta Business Suite and avoids paying for a third-party scheduler solely to manage Meta-owned channels.

  • [BUILT TO LAST] Designed with a flexible cover and premium pages that endure daily use while maintaining a sleek, professional look. Printed on quality FSC-certified paper with convenient laminated tabs that are durable enough to handle daily use throughout the school year

Meta Business Suite is not a full replacement for a cross-network platform. A business that also needs LinkedIn, TikTok, Pinterest, YouTube, X, Google Business Profile, multi-brand reporting, or sophisticated approval workflows will likely need native tools in several places or a third-party platform.

Capabilities can vary by account type, connected profile, post format, and Meta API limitations. Treat Meta Business Suite as the logical free option for Meta-only publishing, not as proof that every Instagram or Facebook format can be scheduled automatically.

Is Metricool the best choice for analytics and multiple brands?

Metricool is the stronger choice when publishing is only one part of the job and the business needs analytics, competitor tracking, reports, Google Business Profile, or multiple brands. Metricool’s current U.S. pricing page shows a free plan for one brand with up to 20 scheduled posts per month and 30 days of analytics. The same page shows Starter from $25 per month and Advanced from $67 per month in the current USD view, with pricing varying by brand count and billing selection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The free plan’s network access shown on the current page excludes LinkedIn and X, so confirm network availability before building a workflow around the free tier. Metricool’s paid plans add broader brand support and data features; Advanced includes team and client management, role controls, and post approvals. The plan details and limits are listed on Metricool’s pricing page.

Metricool is a better commercial fit for a marketer who must show performance to a client or compare several brands. Metricool may feel unnecessarily complex for an owner who only wants to fill a posting queue. “Unlimited” publishing is also subject to fair-use language rather than being an unrestricted promise.

Is Later best for Instagram and TikTok planning?

Later is the best fit when content is highly visual and the calendar itself is central to the workflow. Later’s current pricing page shows Starter at $18.75 per month billed annually, Growth at $37.50 per month, and Scale at $82.50 per month. The plans are organized around social sets—a grouping of profiles across supported networks—rather than simply charging for each network independently.

Later plan Price shown on annual billing Social-set structure Relevant strengths
Starter $18.75 per month Current page shows one social set Visual planning for a smaller workflow
Growth $37.50 per month Current page shows two social sets Higher post limits, collaboration, approvals, and inbox features
Scale $82.50 per month Current page shows six social sets Broader scale and team-oriented capabilities

Later’s current page lists support across Instagram, Facebook, Threads, Pinterest, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Snapchat, along with visual planning features such as Reels, Stories, carousels, first comments, link-in-bio, and best-time tools. The exact profile and post limits depend on the plan, so compare your actual profiles rather than assuming that six networks equal six social sets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Later distinguishes automatic publishing from notification publishing for some personal accounts and formats. A business may need to complete a post in the mobile app instead of allowing Later to publish it entirely. Review the current Later plan and publishing details during the trial.

Is SocialBee worth it for evergreen content?

SocialBee is worth considering when the main problem is maintaining a reusable library of evergreen content. SocialBee’s categories, recurring schedules, RSS and other content sources, bulk editing, CSV uploads, and recycling tools are designed for repeatable publishing rather than a simple chronological queue.

SocialBee plan Monthly price Annual price shown Profile limit Best fit
Bootstrap $29 per month $290 per year Up to five profiles Small evergreen library
Accelerate $49 per month $490 per year Up to 10 profiles More categories, sources, analytics, bulk editing, CSV uploads, and approvals
Pro $99 per month $990 per year Up to 25 profiles Larger publishing operations

SocialBee offers a 14-day free trial without requiring a credit card, rather than a conventional permanent free plan. The current limits, features, trial terms, and plan prices are listed on SocialBee’s pricing page.

Recycling is useful for educational tips, recurring reminders, seasonal material, and evergreen promotions. Recycling is risky for businesses whose prices, inventory, health guidance, travel conditions, or news change frequently. Review categories and pause queues during emergencies, recalls, expired promotions, weather disruptions, or other events that make scheduled content inappropriate.

When is Hootsuite justified?

Hootsuite is justified when social scheduling is part of a wider monitoring, inbox, customer-care, reporting, or governance operation. Hootsuite’s current pricing page shows Standard at $99 per user per month, Professional at $199, and Advanced at $399, with the displayed prices based on annual billing and excluding applicable taxes.

Standard supports up to 10 social accounts, while Professional and Advanced support unlimited social accounts according to the current plan page. All paid plans are sold per user or seat. The higher price can be rational for teams that need account management, monitoring, AI tools, reports, trend forecasting, and social-care workflows. The price is difficult to justify for a solo owner who only schedules several posts each week.

Hootsuite’s current plan page also indicates that bulk scheduling is unavailable during the free trial. Check the trial restrictions and current plan terms at Hootsuite’s plans page before using a trial to test a bulk-upload workflow.

When is Sprout Social justified?

Sprout Social is justified when customer care, review management, listening, advanced reporting, or sophisticated collaboration matters more than low-cost scheduling. Current pricing shows Essentials at $79 per seat per month billed annually, Standard at $199, Professional at $299, and Advanced at $399. Essentials is shown at $99 per month when billed monthly.

Sprout Social plan Annual-billing price shown Profile information Typical reason to consider it
Essentials $79 per seat per month Plan details vary; confirm current profile allowance Entry-level management and engagement
Standard $199 per seat per month Five social profiles More structured reporting and collaboration
Professional $299 per seat per month Unlimited profiles shown in the current comparison Broader monitoring and reporting needs
Advanced $399 per seat per month Unlimited profiles shown in the current comparison Advanced workflows and governance

Sprout Social offers a 30-day trial without a credit card. The current pricing, profile limits, and plan features are available on Sprout Social’s pricing page. Even the $79 Essentials price is substantially higher than a basic scheduler, so Sprout Social is usually a poor fit for a solo owner seeking only a content calendar.

How much does social media scheduling cost at realistic sizes?

Starting prices are not directly comparable because the tools use different billing units. Buffer charges by channel, Later uses social sets and users, Metricool uses brands, SocialBee uses profiles and plan limits, and Hootsuite and Sprout Social primarily use users or seats and plan allowances.

Example workflow Likely comparison What the headline price does not show
Two channels, one owner Buffer Essentials is approximately $10 per month on annual billing, or Buffer Free if its queue is sufficient Taxes, monthly billing, and whether 10 scheduled posts per channel is enough
Three channels, one owner Buffer Essentials is approximately $15 per month on annual billing, while Buffer Free may still work Paid analytics and other channel-level features
Five channels with serious analytics Compare Buffer’s five-channel cost with Metricool’s brand-based Starter or Advanced plan Whether all five profiles belong to one brand and which networks are included
Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, Facebook, LinkedIn, and YouTube Compare Later’s social sets with Buffer’s channel pricing Later’s profile/post limits and whether each format auto-publishes
One owner with evergreen content SocialBee’s $29-to-$49 monthly range may be justified Whether recycling saves enough time and whether content needs frequent review
Two people requiring approvals Compare Buffer Team, Later Growth or Scale, Metricool Advanced, and higher-priced suites Whether pricing counts users, profiles, brands, social sets, or seats
Several brands or clients Metricool or a team-oriented platform may be more practical than many per-channel subscriptions Brand limits, client permissions, reporting exports, and additional seats

These examples are decision aids, not complete quotes. A final total depends on annual versus monthly billing, number of profiles, brands, users, taxes, add-ons, and any changes made by the vendor after the prices were checked.

What should you test before paying?

Use a free plan or trial to test the exact workflow you will run every week, not merely whether an account can be connected.

  1. Connect every required account. Confirm the difference between an Instagram personal, creator, or business account; a Facebook Page; a LinkedIn personal profile or company Page; a TikTok account; and a Google Business Profile.
  2. Publish representative formats. Test an Instagram single image, carousel, Reel, and Story; a TikTok video; a Facebook Reel; a YouTube Short; a LinkedIn post; a Pinterest Pin; a Threads post; an X thread; and a Google Business Profile post if those formats matter to your business.
  3. Check automatic versus notification publishing. A tool may support a network but require a phone notification for a particular account type or format.
  4. Measure the real queue limit. Ask whether the limit applies per channel, profile, brand, social set, workspace, or account; whether published posts refill the queue; and whether scheduled posts can be bulk uploaded.
  5. Test adaptation. Rewrite one campaign for each network instead of sending identical captions and creative everywhere. Cross-posting is not the same as adapting content.
  6. Invite the second user if approvals matter. Test roles, access levels, comments, client access, review stages, and the number of seats included.
  7. Inspect analytics before subscribing. Check the reporting window, historical data, competitor features, exports, metric definitions, and whether the tool includes the networks you need.
  8. Test mobile publishing. If Stories, videos, music, tags, or native editing are important, verify that the phone workflow is practical.
  9. Read fair-use and cancellation terms. “Unlimited” can still be subject to fair-use policies, and annual billing may have different cancellation or refund rules from monthly billing.
  10. Keep a native fallback. Third-party schedulers depend on social-network APIs. API changes can affect formats, caption length, auto-publishing eligibility, first comments, mentions, tags, video, audio, and account permissions.

Why can a supported network still fail to publish?

A supported network can still fail because the required format, account type, permission, or API capability is not supported. “Supports Instagram” is therefore an incomplete buying criterion.

Common examples include an Instagram Story that requires notification publishing, a personal profile that cannot use the same automatic-publishing method as a business account, a video whose audio handling is restricted, or a post with tags and collaboration features that the scheduler cannot reproduce. Later’s pricing documentation explicitly distinguishes automatic publishing from notification publishing for some accounts and formats; other platforms also identify format-specific limitations in their current documentation.

Social-network APIs can change after you subscribe. A failed-post notification should be treated as an operational signal: check the native app, identify the missing permission or unsupported format, publish manually if the post is time-sensitive, and update your content template so the same failure does not recur.

Is a third-party scheduler better than native scheduling?

A native scheduler is better when you use one network or one network family and do not need cross-platform reporting. Meta Business Suite is the clearest example for Facebook and Instagram, while native tools can also be useful for checking final formatting and publishing posts that require network-specific features.

Whether you're at home, in the office, or on the go, you'll always be able to capture your thoughts and stay on top of your daily routine.

A third-party scheduler earns its cost when it reduces repeated work across several networks, provides one calendar, supports multiple brands, adds approval workflows, or turns analytics into reports. A third-party scheduler does not automatically improve content quality, audience engagement, or algorithmic distribution. Somebody still needs to respond to comments and messages, monitor urgent issues, check posts after publication, and adapt content to each network.

Native platform analytics should remain the final verification source for important campaign reporting. Different tools may define impressions, reach, engagements, video views, and reporting windows differently, so figures from two dashboards should not be assumed to be directly comparable.

How can you choose in five minutes?

  1. Only Facebook and Instagram? Start with Meta Business Suite.
  2. Three or fewer channels and simplicity is the priority? Try Buffer Free, then upgrade to Essentials only when the queue or paid features justify it.
  3. Need analytics, competitor tracking, reports, or multiple brands? Try Metricool.
  4. Mostly visual content for Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, Reels, or Stories? Try Later and test automatic publishing for each required format.
  5. Need recurring evergreen categories, RSS sources, or recycling? Try SocialBee’s 14-day trial.
  6. Need a two-person approval workflow? Compare Buffer Team, Later Growth or Scale, and Metricool Advanced before considering a higher-priced suite.
  7. Need listening, customer care, review management, or enterprise governance? Consider Hootsuite or Sprout Social, but calculate the seat cost against the business value of those functions.

Which pricing unit applies to your business?

Count the units that each vendor actually bills before comparing tools:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Term What it means Why it affects the decision
Network A platform such as Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok, Pinterest, YouTube, X, Threads, or Google Business Profile One network can contain several profiles
Channel or profile One connected account, such as one Instagram account or one Facebook Page Buffer’s per-channel pricing can rise with every connected account
Brand A billing or reporting grouping used by Metricool and some competitors Several profiles may belong to one brand, but the vendor’s exact definition matters
Social set Later’s grouping of one profile on each supported network Six networks do not necessarily mean six Later social sets
User or seat A person allowed to access the account Hootsuite and Sprout Social can become expensive as collaborators are added

What are the main operational risks?

  • Stale scheduled content: Pause evergreen queues during emergencies, recalls, major news, weather disruptions, ended promotions, pricing changes, or organizational crises.
  • Over-automation: Identical posts rarely work equally well on LinkedIn, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest.
  • Short free queues: Buffer Free’s 10-post-per-channel limit and Metricool Free’s 20-post-per-month limit may be fine for light posting but restrictive for a content-heavy schedule.
  • Missing collaboration: Free tiers commonly restrict users, approvals, or roles, so a second person may require a paid upgrade.
  • Limited analytics history: Metricool’s free plan shows 30 days of analytics; a longer reporting requirement may require a paid plan or native exports.
  • Changing free plans: Free plans can change or disappear. Later’s current pricing page prominently presents a 14-day trial and paid plans, so Later should not be described as having a permanent unlimited free plan based on older comparison pages.
  • Misleading “unlimited” labels: Buffer and Metricool qualify unlimited usage through fair-use language, while other plans restrict profiles, categories, sources, posts, brands, or social sets.

Final recommendation

Start with Buffer Free if you manage up to three channels and want the simplest general-purpose test. Upgrade to Buffer Essentials when the 10-post-per-channel queue or paid features become a real constraint; choose Team when approval workflows and access levels matter.

Choose Meta Business Suite instead when Facebook and Instagram are your only channels. Choose Metricool when reporting and multiple brands are central, Later when visual planning is central, and SocialBee when evergreen recycling is the main time-saving feature. Reserve Hootsuite and Sprout Social for businesses that will actively use their monitoring, customer-care, governance, and advanced reporting capabilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Buffer really free for small businesses?

Yes. Buffer’s free plan supports up to three connected channels, 10 scheduled posts per channel, and one user. The free queue may be enough for a solo owner posting occasionally, but paid analytics, collaboration, and higher scheduling capacity require an upgrade.

What is the best free social media scheduler for Facebook and Instagram?

Meta Business Suite is the best native free starting point for a business using only Facebook Pages and Instagram. Buffer Free is more useful when the business also needs a small number of other networks, while neither option should be assumed to auto-publish every format.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which scheduler is best for multiple brands?

Metricool is the strongest choice among the tools compared for analytics and multiple brands because its plans use brand-based limits and include reporting, competitor tracking, and team features. Confirm the current brand allowance, network access, and billing selection before subscribing.

Do social media schedulers automatically publish every post format?

No. Automatic publishing depends on the social network, account type, post format, permissions, and API capabilities. Test Reels, Stories, carousels, TikTok videos, Shorts, tags, music, and other required formats during a trial because some workflows use mobile notification publishing instead.

Should a small business pay for Hootsuite or Sprout Social?

A small business should pay for Hootsuite or Sprout Social when it needs social listening, customer care, consolidated inboxes, review management, governance, or advanced reporting—not merely a calendar for several weekly posts. Their entry prices are substantially higher than basic schedulers.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Start with Buffer for a general small-business workflow, Meta Business Suite for Facebook and Instagram only, Metricool for analytics and multiple brands, Later for visual planning, and SocialBee for evergreen recycling. Test the exact account types and formats you publish before paying, because network support does not guarantee automatic publishing.
