To use Xbox Cloud Gaming on a Steam Deck, you need an eligible Xbox Game Pass plan for most paid games, a browser shortcut configured in Desktop Mode, a Bluetooth or USB controller, and a dependable internet connection. Microsoft’s documented Steam Deck method installs the community-maintained Microsoft Edge Flatpak, adds it as a non-Steam game, grants access to controller devices, and opens xbox.com/play from Gaming Mode.
Plan for at least 10 Mbps download speed; 20 Mbps is the better target for a PC-class stream. A 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection or wired Ethernet is preferable because bandwidth alone does not prevent latency, jitter, or congestion problems.
What do I need for Xbox Cloud Gaming on Steam Deck?
The complete setup has four parts: an account and subscription that permit cloud play, a browser-based Steam shortcut, a compatible controller, and a network that can sustain the stream where you actually play. Steam Deck support is officially described as beta, so this is a practical browser workaround rather than a native SteamOS Xbox application.
Recommended Free Tools
- Microsoft account: You sign in to Xbox through the browser.
- Cloud-enabled plan: Most paid games require an eligible Game Pass tier. Select free-to-play titles have a separate exception.
- Steam Deck in Desktop Mode: You use Discover Software Center and Konsole for the initial setup.
- Microsoft Edge Flatpak: Microsoft’s guide documents the community-maintained Edge package for SteamOS.
- Controller: Connect a compatible gamepad over Bluetooth or USB, or configure the Deck’s built-in controls through Steam Input.
- Internet connection: Xbox lists 10 Mbps down as a minimum and recommends 20 Mbps for best performance on PCs and tablets.
After setup, you return to Gaming Mode and launch the browser shortcut from the non-Steam library. The first configuration is easier with a mouse and keyboard, although Steam plus X opens the Steam Deck touch keyboard.

Do I need Game Pass Ultimate?
No. Ultimate is not the only cloud-enabled option, but the appropriate tier depends on how many cloud hours you need, which games you want, and whether extras such as day-one releases matter. Xbox’s current US listing shows three tiers with monthly cloud-hour allowances.
| Plan | Cloud catalog and release timing | Cloud hours per month | US price shown by Xbox | Notable extras |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | 50+ games | 5 | $9.99 per month | Cloud access for included titles |
| Premium | 200+ games; Xbox-published games within one year | 10 | $14.99 per month | Larger catalog and earlier access to Xbox-published games |
| Ultimate | 500+ games; day-one releases | 15 | $22.99 per month | EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics, best stated streaming quality and shortest waits |
These are a US market snapshot, not permanent worldwide prices. Xbox says game counts, titles, features, taxes, promotions, supported regions, and availability vary by region, plan, and platform. Check the plan page immediately before subscribing, especially if you are outside the United States.
What changes in November 2026?
Xbox announced on September 3, 2026 that, beginning in November, eligible Game Pass plans will use monthly cloud-hour allowances and that additional hours will be purchasable through the Xbox Store. The table reflects the currently listed five-, 10-, and 15-hour allowances, but those limits and prices may change when the new system rolls out. A subscription that looks sufficient for occasional sessions can therefore be a poor fit for daily play if you regularly exceed its allowance.
Can I play without Game Pass?
Xbox says select free-to-play games, including Fortnite, can be played with a free Microsoft account in supported regions without Game Pass. Paid cloud titles generally require an eligible plan, and the free-to-play exception does not make the entire cloud catalog available without a subscription.
How do I set up Xbox Cloud Gaming on a Steam Deck?
Use Desktop Mode for installation and configuration, then launch the finished shortcut from Gaming Mode. The following sequence follows Microsoft’s documented Steam Deck procedure.

- MODERNIZED DESIGN — Experience the modernized design of the XBOX Wireless Controller with sculpted surfaces and updated geometry that enhances comfort and control during long gaming sessions.
- PRECISION PERFORMANCE — Stay on target with a hybrid D-pad and textured grips on triggers, bumpers, and back case for improved accuracy and handling.

- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
- Switch to Desktop Mode. Open the Steam Deck power menu and choose Desktop Mode. Connect a mouse and keyboard if available; they make browser sign-in and text entry easier.
- Install Edge. Open Discover Software Center, search for Microsoft Edge, and install the community-maintained Microsoft Edge Flatpak. This package is not actively maintained by Microsoft, so its behavior can change after browser or SteamOS updates.
- Add Edge to Steam. In Desktop Mode, open Steam, choose Add a Game, select Add a Non-Steam Game, pick Microsoft Edge, and add it to the library.
- Grant controller-device access. Open Konsole and run:
flatpak --user override --filesystem=/run/udev:ro com.microsoft.Edge
This permission lets the Flatpak see the controller devices needed for gamepad input. - Set the launch options. In Steam, open the Edge shortcut’s properties and append this complete command to the launch-options field:
--window-size=1024,640 --force-device-scale-factor=1.25 --device-scale-factor=1.25 --kiosk "https://www.xbox.com/play"
The options size the browser window, apply the documented display scale, and open Xbox Cloud Gaming in kiosk mode. - Choose a controller layout. Open the shortcut’s controller settings and select a gamepad-friendly Steam Input template. Microsoft’s guide suggests Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad, which supplies gamepad controls while retaining pointer input for browser screens.
- Return to Gaming Mode. Restart or switch back to Gaming Mode, open the non-Steam library entry, and launch the shortcut. Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the cloud-enabled plan, then choose a title at xbox.com/play.
Why is the Edge permission command necessary?
Flatpak applications are sandboxed. The --filesystem=/run/udev:ro override gives the Edge package read-only access to the Linux device-information path where controller devices are exposed. If you skip this step, the browser may open normally while the game fails to receive a controller.
Is Chrome supported instead of Edge?
Microsoft’s Steam Deck instructions document Edge, not Chrome. The supplied official procedure therefore gives you no equivalent Chrome command, permission rule, or launch configuration to rely on; use the documented Edge path when you want the clearest troubleshooting route. A different Chromium browser may behave differently after SteamOS or browser updates, so changing browsers adds an unsupported variable.

Xbox lists 10 Mbps download as the minimum for cloud play. Its detailed guidance says the best performance on consoles, PCs, and tablets is achieved at 20 Mbps; its getting-started guidance also recommends wired Ethernet where possible. These figures describe download capacity, not a guaranteed latency or image-quality result.
| Connection factor | Practical target | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Download speed | 10 Mbps minimum; 20 Mbps preferred for PC-class play | Provides headroom for the live video stream and interface traffic |
| Wi-Fi band | 5 GHz on a dual-band router | Usually reduces congestion and interference compared with a weak 2.4 GHz signal |
| Wired option | Ethernet through a compatible USB-C adapter | Can reduce wireless jitter and local radio interference |
| Play location | Test at the Deck, not only beside the router | Walls, distance, and competing devices can change the actual connection |
How should I test the connection?
- Run a speed test at the place where you normally hold the Deck. A fast result beside the router does not describe the signal at the sofa or in bed.
- Prefer the router’s 5 GHz network when the Deck is within reliable range. Use Ethernet through a USB-C adapter if Wi-Fi stalls or fluctuates.
- Pause large downloads, game updates, video streams, and cloud backups while playing.
- Watch for symptoms rather than speed alone: blurry video, audio dropouts, delayed controls, and repeated reconnects usually indicate congestion, jitter, or a weak path.
Xbox notes that streaming performance is also affected by your location, device, and other factors. Treat 20 Mbps as a comfortable bandwidth floor for a PC-class stream, not as a promise of low latency.
Do I need an Xbox controller?
You need a compatible controller, but it does not have to be an Xbox-branded model. Xbox supports compatible pads connected by Bluetooth or USB, and many third-party controllers work through the same input paths. An Xbox Wireless Controller is the simplest separately purchased match for the service because its layout corresponds directly to Xbox prompts.

Can I use the Steam Deck’s built-in controls?
Yes. After Edge is added as a non-Steam game, Steam Input can map the Deck’s controls to a gamepad layout. The built-in controls are useful when you do not want another accessory, but browser navigation and account sign-in can be more convenient with a mouse and keyboard during setup.
What about touch or mouse-and-keyboard games?
Some cloud games accept touch or mouse-and-keyboard input, but support varies by title. Do not assume that a game with a PC version will expose every PC input method through its cloud session; verify the game’s own input behavior after launching.
Does Steam Deck officially support Xbox Cloud Gaming?
Xbox describes Steam Deck support as beta. That means the browser method is usable, but it is not the same as a native, fully supported SteamOS client.
“Steam Deck – Support is in beta.” — Xbox Wire, December 19, 2025
Microsoft also says it does not actively maintain the Microsoft Edge Flatpak package and does not provide official Edge-on-SteamOS support. Browser updates, Flatpak changes, and SteamOS revisions can therefore require you to revisit the shortcut, permissions, or controller layout.

What does the beta status mean in practice?
- The documented steps may work today but can need adjustment after an update.
- A browser shortcut can break independently of Xbox’s cloud service if the Flatpak package changes.
- There is no native Xbox Cloud Gaming application in the documented Steam Deck path.
- Keeping a mouse or keyboard nearby makes sign-in and recovery faster when controller navigation stops working.
Which plan and setup make sense for different players?
Choose based on usage rather than the headline game count. A short-session player may fit the least expensive tier, while someone using the Deck as a primary gaming device may value a larger catalog and day-one access more than the subscription difference.
Occasional cloud player
Start with the lowest eligible tier if you mainly want to sample cloud gaming or play a few sessions each month. Confirm that the games you want are included and that the monthly allowance covers your planned time.
Regular player with a broad catalog
The middle tier is aimed at players who want more than the entry catalog and expect to use cloud gaming repeatedly. Compare its allowance with your actual play pattern rather than assuming the larger library alone justifies the cost.
Day-one and bundled-service player
Ultimate is the only listed tier with day-one releases and the additional EA Play, Fortnite Crew, and Ubisoft+ Classics benefits. It also carries the highest stated streaming quality and shortest waits, but its price and allowance still need to be checked against the current market listing.

The shortcut opens, but no controller is detected
- Confirm the controller is paired over Bluetooth or connected by USB and works in another Steam game.
- Re-run the Konsole permission command exactly as shown, including
com.microsoft.Edge. - Close and relaunch the Edge shortcut after changing the override.
- Check the Steam Input template and try the Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad layout.
The stream is blurry or keeps pausing
- Move to the 5 GHz network, or use Ethernet through a compatible USB-C adapter.
- Pause downloads and other high-bandwidth traffic on the network.
- Test at the playing location and compare results with the Deck near the router.
- If speed is below 10 Mbps, the connection is below Xbox’s stated minimum; if it is near 20 Mbps but still unstable, jitter or congestion is more likely than raw bandwidth.
The browser window is badly scaled or not opening Xbox Cloud Gaming
Open the non-Steam shortcut properties and verify that the launch options contain the complete documented sequence, including the quoted https://www.xbox.com/play address. Remove accidental line breaks or duplicated quotation marks, then relaunch from Gaming Mode.

The setup worked before an update
Because Edge on SteamOS is a community-maintained Flatpak and Steam Deck support is beta, an update can change behavior without changing your Game Pass account. Recheck the Edge installation, the filesystem override, the launch options, and the Steam Input template before replacing hardware or changing plans.
What should I verify before subscribing?
- Your country is a supported Xbox Cloud Gaming region.
- The exact games you want are included in the selected tier and available on the Steam Deck browser path.
- The listed monthly cloud-hour allowance matches your expected usage.
- The displayed price is current for your market and includes any applicable tax.
- Your Deck can reach a stable 5 GHz Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection where you intend to play.
- You have a compatible Bluetooth or USB controller, or time to configure Steam Input for the built-in controls.
For most readers, the sensible sequence is to test the free-to-play exception or a short subscription period, confirm the browser shortcut and network at the actual play location, and then decide whether a larger catalog or bundled benefits justify a higher tier.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play Fortnite on a Steam Deck without paying for Game Pass?
Xbox allows select free-to-play games such as Fortnite with a free Microsoft account in supported regions. You still need the browser setup, a compatible controller, and a connection that can sustain cloud streaming.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Will cloud gaming use my Steam Deck storage?
The browser method streams the game rather than installing its full files in SteamOS. You mainly need storage for the browser package and normal SteamOS data, while the stream itself depends on network bandwidth.
Can I use mobile data instead of home Wi-Fi?
Xbox’s guidance lists mobile data as a possible connection for best-performance scenarios, but cellular quality varies by location and can incur data charges. Check your carrier’s allowance and test latency at the place where you will play.
What happens when I reach my monthly cloud-hour allowance?
The allowance is tied to the subscription tier, so heavy users should monitor usage rather than assume unlimited cloud time. Xbox announced that eligible plans will allow additional hours to be purchased through the Xbox Store beginning in November 2026; verify the live rules and pricing before relying on that option.
