To use PlayStation Plus Cloud Streaming, you need a PlayStation Plus Premium membership and a broadband connection with at least 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download. The device depends on how you want to play: a PlayStation Portal Remote Player, a PS5 console, or a compatible Windows PC using Sony’s PlayStation Plus app. Not every PlayStation game can be streamed, and availability depends on your country or region and the title.

What do I need for PlayStation Plus Cloud Streaming?

The essentials are a Premium membership, a PlayStation account, a supported device, and a sufficiently fast connection. The exact hardware and account rules differ by device: Portal cloud streaming requires the Portal handheld, while PC streaming uses Sony’s Windows app and a compatible controller.

  • Membership: PlayStation Plus Premium. Cloud Streaming is not included with Essential or Extra.
  • Internet: At least 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download to establish a cloud-streaming session. Higher rates are recommended for some resolutions and devices.
  • Account and location: A PlayStation account and access from a supported country or region. Portal streaming is not available to child accounts.
  • Device: A PlayStation Portal Remote Player, a PS5, or a compatible Windows PC, depending on where you want to play.
  • Eligible game: Only selected titles can be streamed. A game appearing in a catalog or library does not by itself guarantee streaming eligibility.

Sony says performance varies with the specific game and the quality of the network environment. Meeting a listed speed target is therefore a starting point, not a promise of a particular response time or uninterrupted picture.

Is PlayStation Plus Premium required?

Yes. Cloud Streaming is a PlayStation Plus Premium benefit; PlayStation Plus Essential and Extra do not include it. Premium also includes benefits such as the Game Catalog, Classics Catalog, and game trials, but streaming is the feature that makes Premium necessary for this use.

PS Portal + Case + Charging Station
  • Put Your PS5 in the Palm of Your Hand - PlayStation Portal Remote Player gives you access to the games on your PS5 over your home Wi-Fi*, letting you jump right into gaming without needing to play on a TV.
  • Play Your Game Collection - PlayStation Portal Remote Player can play compatible games you have installed on your PS5 console, including your favorite games for PS5 and PS4.**
  • Store and Protect – Sturdy outer shell, molded interior and dual zipper pulls provides protection for the PlayStation Portal remote player
  • Charging Cable Pass-through – Allows a charging cable to be plugged into the PS Portal while stored inside the case
  • Charge and Display – Charge the PlayStation Portal remote player and display it next to your PlayStation5 console

That distinction matters if you already pay for another PlayStation Plus tier: an Essential or Extra membership alone does not meet the cloud-streaming membership requirement. Check the membership comparison on Sony’s official PlayStation Plus page before subscribing or changing tiers, since included benefits can vary by region.

What internet speed do I need?

Sony’s stated minimum to start a cloud-streaming session is 5 Mbps in both directions: upload and download. Sony also publishes higher device- or resolution-specific targets, which should not be mistaken for the same universal minimum.

Guidance Resolution Internet speed How to interpret it
Sony minimum Session establishment 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download Minimum broadband speeds to establish a session.
Portal support guidance 720p At least 7 Mbps Portal-specific practical target.
Portal support guidance 1080p At least 13 Mbps Portal-specific practical target.
PS5 cloud-streaming page 720p HD 13 Mbps recommended Sony’s recommendation for this resolution on PS5.
PS5 cloud-streaming page 1080p Full HD 23 Mbps recommended Sony’s recommendation for this resolution on PS5.
PS5 cloud-streaming page 1440p 38 Mbps recommended Sony’s recommendation for this resolution on PS5.
PS5 cloud-streaming page 2160p (4K) 52 Mbps recommended Sony’s recommendation for this resolution on PS5.

The figures are not interchangeable. For example, the Portal support page’s 7 Mbps target for 720p differs from the PS5 page’s 13 Mbps recommendation for 720p; use the guidance for the device you plan to use rather than assuming one number applies to every setup. The 5 Mbps upload-and-download minimum is a session requirement, not a recommended target for every resolution.

Speed is only one part of the connection. A result that meets the target does not tell you whether the connection will remain consistent while playing. Sony specifically notes that game performance also depends on the network environment; its cited guidance does not set a separate latency target. If play is choppy or the connection drops, check the connection’s stability as well as its measured download and upload rates.

Which devices can stream PlayStation Plus games?

Cloud streaming is available through supported PlayStation hardware and Sony’s PC app, but the requirements are not the same. A PS5 does not need to be available for a Portal cloud session; Portal uses its own hardware and a Wi-Fi connection. PC streaming instead requires a compatible Windows computer and controller.

Device What you need Does a PS5 need to be available? Streaming notes
PlayStation Portal Portal Remote Player, PlayStation account, Premium, broadband Wi-Fi, adult account, supported country or region No Selected PS5 Game Catalog and Classics Catalog games, plus selected digital PS5 games from your library.
PS5 console PS5, PlayStation account, Premium, broadband connection Yes, to play on the console itself Eligible games show a PlayStation Plus Stream option. Streaming can include selected Store, catalog, and free-to-play titles.
Windows PC Compatible Windows PC, PlayStation Plus app, adult PlayStation account, Premium, broadband, compatible controller No Sony’s PC app supports PS4 Game Catalog games and selected Classics Catalog titles.

How do I start cloud streaming on PlayStation Portal?

Use the Portal’s Cloud Streaming tab to find an eligible title and start a session. Sony identifies the PlayStation Portal Remote Player as required hardware; a PS5 console does not have to be available for the cloud session.

  1. Confirm that you have Premium, an adult PlayStation account, broadband Wi-Fi, and access from a supported country or region.
  2. From the Portal home screen, select the Cloud Streaming tab.
  3. Choose a title from PlayStation Plus Premium streaming, PlayStation Plus streaming games, or an eligible game in Your Library.
  4. Select Stream to begin, if the title is eligible for your account and region.

Portal cloud streaming is distinct from using Portal to play remotely from your own PS5. For the cloud session described here, the game is streamed from Sony’s service; the console does not have to be available. You still need the Portal itself, and only eligible titles appear as streamable.

How does streaming work on PS5?

On PS5, an eligible title offers a PlayStation Plus Stream option. Selecting it lets you play the streamed version without first downloading the game or installing its updates. The eligible set can include selected PlayStation Store titles, Game Catalog and Classics Catalog titles, and selected free-to-play games; those categories do not mean every title in them is streamable.

Use Sony’s Cloud Streaming Game Finder to check a specific game. If you do not see the stream option, the title may not be eligible in your region or at that time. A game can be available to download and play locally without being available to stream.

What does PC streaming require?

PC streaming uses the PlayStation Plus app on a compatible Windows computer, rather than the Portal interface. Sony recommends a wired connection. The computer must meet Sony’s listed minimum specifications, and you need a compatible controller in addition to Premium and broadband.

  • Windows 8.1 or Windows 10
  • Intel Core i3 2.0 GHz processor
  • 300 MB available storage
  • 2 GB RAM
  • Sound card and USB port
  • Broadband internet of at least 5 Mbps
  • Compatible controller

Sony’s listed PC minimums are modest, but they are requirements for the app, not a guarantee that every network or game will perform consistently. Sony’s getting-started guidance also specifies an adult PlayStation Network account. Check Sony’s current PC app requirements before installing, particularly if your computer runs an operating system other than the versions listed above.

Which PlayStation games can I stream?

You cannot stream every PlayStation game. Sony makes selected titles available, and the eligible selection can depend on the device, country or region, and time. Check a title in Sony’s Cloud Streaming Game Finder or use Portal’s cloud-streaming search instead of assuming that ownership or catalog access is enough.

The types of games Sony identifies vary by device:

  • Portal: Selected PS5 games from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Classics Catalog, plus selected digital PS5 games in your PlayStation Store library.
  • PS5: Selected PlayStation Store titles, Game Catalog and Classics Catalog titles, and selected free-to-play games.
  • Windows PC: PS4 games from the Game Catalog and selected Classics Catalog titles through the app.

These lists describe categories, not blanket eligibility. A title can be absent from the streamable selection even if you own it or can access it through another PlayStation Plus benefit. Sony’s game finder is the best way to confirm current eligibility; on Portal, the Cloud Streaming tab provides a device-level way to browse available options.

Where is PlayStation Plus Cloud Streaming available?

Streaming is limited to Sony-supported countries and regions, and the supported list can change. Sony’s Portal guidance currently includes the United States, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom, and numerous European countries; it excludes overseas territories on the cited support guidance.

Do not assume that a country is supported because PlayStation Plus is sold there or because a game is available for download. Check Sony’s current regional support page for the device and country you intend to use. Eligibility also depends on the account and title, so regional availability for the service does not guarantee that every game can be streamed.

How should I choose between Portal, PS5, and PC?

Choose based on where you want to play and what hardware you already have. Portal is the dedicated handheld option and does not require a PS5 to be available for a cloud session; PS5 puts streaming on the console; PC requires the Windows app and a compatible controller.

  • Choose Portal if you specifically want to play supported streamed titles on the Portal and meet its account, Wi-Fi, and regional requirements.
  • Choose PS5 if you want to stream eligible titles directly on your console. Streaming can avoid downloading the game and installing updates first.
  • Choose PC if you have a compatible Windows computer and controller and want to use Sony’s app. Sony recommends connecting the PC by wire.

Whichever route you choose, check both the device requirements and the game’s current eligibility before subscribing for the purpose of streaming. The membership benefit is shared, but the hardware, catalog details, and practical speed targets differ.
