If you want another Nintendo DS RPG, start with Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story or Chrono Trigger. If you want the bright, character-led feel of Sonic’s party, follow the Mario RPG line; if BioWare’s dialogue and companions were the draw, try Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, or Baldur’s Gate 3. Those are three different kinds of “games like Sonic Chronicles,” and the best next game depends on which part you want to keep.

What made Sonic Chronicles different from other Sonic games?
Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood is a 2008 Nintendo DS turn-based RPG published by Sega and developed by BioWare. It is Sonic’s first RPG, and GameSpot’s Chris Compendio described it in October 2026 as “BioWare’s first–and only–handheld game.” The North American release date recorded by Metacritic and Game Informer is September 30, 2008.
The game is a curious intersection of mascot adventure and BioWare role-playing. Its isometric, hand-drawn environments are explored with the DS stylus. In battle, four characters fight at a time in turn-based encounters, while special POW attacks use touch-screen taps and slides reminiscent of Elite Beat Agents and Super Mario RPG. The party’s members also have different overworld abilities: Sonic dashes and loops, Tails flies, Knuckles climbs, and Amy smashes obstacles. Chao can be attached for battle bonuses, and rings serve as currency.

The story opens after Sonic has defeated Eggman and gone on vacation; he is called back when Knuckles and the Chaos Emeralds are taken. The plot involves an echidna tribe from another dimension and introduces Shade. It is more involved than a typical Sonic plot, but the dialogue choices should not be mistaken for a full BioWare branching narrative. Sonic can answer compassionately, inquisitively, or rudely; a response may change a conversation, add romantic tension with Amy, or let the party avoid some battles. It does not send the overall plot down different paths. As Compendio put it, “your decisions didn’t cause any ripple effects on the plot.”

The game’s unusual pedigree is part of its appeal. GameSpot reports that a 30-person team made it, with Mark Darrah directing and Jay Turner writing; Darrah also directed the first two Dragon Age games, while Turner later wrote Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3. That background helps explain why the game can feel like a small experiment in BioWare’s usual interests, even though it remains a compact handheld RPG rather than a portable Mass Effect.
How was Sonic Chronicles received?
Reviews landed in the middle overall, with strong individual praise as well as reservations. Metacritic’s live DS page lists a 74 Metascore from 55 critic reviews; its 2026 breakdown shows 25 positive reviews (45%), 30 mixed (55%), and none negative. Its live user score is 6.2 from 133 ratings, a separate measure from critic reviews.
Individual reviews show why the response was not uniform. GameSpot’s Shiva Stella scored it 6.5 and called it “a laudable effort” that fell short of its potential; IGN also gave it 6.5. Game Informer rated it 8.5, and VideoGamer gave it 8. Those outlets saw different strengths and shortcomings in an accessible, relatively simple RPG built around a familiar cast. Game Informer summed up its audience as “dedicated (and lapsed) fans, the BioWare faithful, and anyone just looking for a decent RPG on DS.”

The sound drew sharply conflicting reactions. GameSpot’s 2026 retrospective calls the soundtrack widely reviled, while Game Informer praised “Killer guitar riffs!” A rumor that the intended music was replaced shortly before release has not been pinned down, so it should not be treated as an established explanation for the finished soundtrack.
Which Nintendo DS RPG should I play next?
For the closest same-system follow-up, choose Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story. Choose Chrono Trigger if you want a classic party RPG, and look to the other DS picks below when you want a specific variation: more puzzles, a longer customizable journey, stylus-first combat, or a darker strategy game.
1. Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story — closest overall match
This is the most natural next game if you liked Sonic’s party exploring an isometric world and taking turns with timed actions in battle. It is a DS mascot RPG with humor and character abilities, rather than a BioWare-style story of decisions with lasting consequences. Nintendo Life describes the series as a take on the Super Mario RPG idea and says this third entry took that concept to new heights; its list favors the DS original over the later 3DS update.
There is also a useful reader-to-reader comparison: a Nintendo Life commenter said Sonic Chronicles was as fun as the Mario & Luigi games, especially for exploring the overworld. That is a personal opinion, not a critical consensus, but it points to a genuine overlap in what the games ask you to enjoy. If you want another DS entry after this one, Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time is another strong, funny RPG with four-button battles.

2. Chrono Trigger — the strongest classic-RPG alternative
The DS version of Chrono Trigger is a good choice if the appeal was the party adventure and combination attacks rather than Sonic characters specifically. Game Informer noted that Sonic Chronicles’ team-up moves stir memories of Chrono Trigger, while Nintendo Life calls the DS edition the definitive version. ScreenRant notes that the DS release includes PlayStation cutscenes, a dual-screen interface, and additional content.
The game originally appeared in the United States on DS in 2008, the same year as Sonic Chronicles. A downside for someone shopping for cartridges is that ScreenRant says the DS version can be pricey second-hand; used-game prices change, and no dependable current price is established here. If you have a DS already, this is a particularly good route from an accessible handheld party RPG to a widely praised classic.
3. Golden Sun: Dark Dawn — for puzzles and magical exploration
Golden Sun: Dark Dawn combines turn-based battles with puzzle-solving and magical exploration. It is a solid pick if you want a DS RPG that asks you to do more than move between conversations and fights, while still keeping a conventional party-battle structure. It also revisits a GBA series with an established following, so it suits players curious about a longer-running handheld RPG lineage.
4. Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies — for a longer, customizable adventure
Choose Dragon Quest IX if you want a traditional turn-based journey with more room for party building. Nintendo Life describes it as a home-console-sized epic on DS, with multiplayer and no corners cut; ScreenRant highlights its party customization and says a full playthrough matches the length of Dragon Quest VIII, with completionist runs much longer. Those are editorial descriptions, not an official publisher playtime estimate.
That scale is a major difference from the short, accessible feel critics assigned to Sonic Chronicles. If you want a smaller step into the same series instead, Dragon Quest V on DS is a remake built around a story that spans a lifetime.
5. The World Ends With You — when the stylus is the point
The World Ends With You is the pick for someone who liked using the DS touch screen more than following Sonic lore. Its combat was designed around the original system’s two screens and stylus, and its Shibuya setting, fashion, music, and urban culture make it tonally very different from the bright mascot-adventure group. ScreenRant’s 2026 coverage notes that it was revived on Switch, but argues there is no true way to recreate the original experience without playing on a DS.
6. Radiant Historia — for timelines and puzzle-like battles
Radiant Historia offers a time-travel premise, a likeable cast, and combat that Nintendo Life characterizes as puzzle-like. It is a good alternative if what you want after Sonic Chronicles is a tightly structured JRPG with a more explicit branching-timeline hook. A 3DS edition, Perfect Chronology, was released in 2018 and is not drastically different from the DS original, according to Nintendo Life.

Other DS directions
- Final Fantasy IV (DS remake): Choose this for a challenging, traditional RPG. Nintendo Life praises its graphics and soundtrack.
- Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor: This blends strategy-RPG combat with deep customization, and is considerably darker than Sonic Chronicles. A 3DS edition, Overclocked, also exists.
- Pokémon HeartGold & SoulSilver: These are highly regarded DS remakes and the strongest choice if Chao bonuses made you want a fuller creature-collecting game. They add Pokémon following the player and support the PokéWalker accessory.
Other names on Nintendo Life’s DS RPG list include Final Fantasy Tactics A2, Pokémon Black and White and their sequels, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, Etrian Odyssey III, Solatorobo: Red the Hunter, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey, and Infinite Space. These widen the library beyond the closest matches: tactical combat, dungeon exploration, action-oriented adventure, and science-fiction RPGs all appear among them.

For a named cartoon cast, action commands, and a playful world, the Mario RPG family is the closest design cousin. Bowser’s Inside Story is the best direct recommendation; the broader lineage lets you choose between the DS Mario & Luigi games and the original Super Mario RPG.
Critics in 2008 often framed Sonic Chronicles as Sega arriving late to a genre that Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars had helped define. GameRevolution pointed to the obvious parallels: an isometric mascot world, leveling, HP and MP, and timed special moves. The resemblance is most useful as a guide to taste: if you liked recognizable platform-game characters translated into a turn-based party, a Mario RPG is a better bet than a game chosen only because BioWare made it.
After Bowser’s Inside Story, try Partners in Time on DS or go back to the GBA Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. If you want the historical template those games build on, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is the 1996 SNES original named in the contemporary comparisons. A current-platform Super Mario RPG listing exists on Switch, offering a route for players who have moved on from DS hardware.
What should I play if BioWare was the reason I tried Sonic Chronicles?
Go to BioWare’s larger companion RPGs if you wanted relationships and decisions to matter beyond a conversation. Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect, and Dragon Age connect most directly to the studio’s history; for a current game centered on reactive companions, Baldur’s Gate 3 is the strongest recommendation in this group.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute1. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic — for BioWare’s licensed-world roots
Knights of the Old Republic is the most direct bridge from Sonic Chronicles to a classic BioWare companion RPG. GameSpot cites the studio’s earlier Star Wars game as a precedent for adapting a licensed universe. Here the recognizable franchise is not merely a skin for Sonic-style exploration: the appeal is the party, role-playing choices, and a much fuller BioWare structure.
2. Mass Effect — for choices that carry forward
If Sonic’s dialogue options made you wonder what a deeper version might look like, Mass Effect is the obvious next stop. Reviews of Sonic Chronicles repeatedly contrasted its conversations with Mass Effect and KOTOR; in Sonic’s game, replies can change a scene or skip a fight, but not reshape the main plot. Mass Effect is the series to choose when the dialogue wheel and consequences are the main attraction.

3. Dragon Age — for fantasy companions and a shared director
Dragon Age is a natural follow-up if you want a fantasy setting and party relationships rather than science-fiction. The connection is not only thematic: Mark Darrah, who directed Sonic Chronicles, also directed the first two Dragon Age games. The series offers a much larger role-playing setting than a handheld Sonic adventure, so it suits readers who want to invest in an expansive fantasy campaign.
4. Baldur’s Gate 3 — for reactive relationships now
Baldur’s Gate 3 is the recommendation for players who want companion relationships that evolve in response to their actions, including camp conversations and romances. It is a turn-based role-playing game with Dungeons & Dragons freedom, not a medieval version of Mass Effect. That distinction matters: choose it for party reactivity and flexible role-playing, not because it reproduces a BioWare dialogue wheel.

In October 2026, reporting by JeuxEnd described the closure of BioWare following EA’s October 21 announcement and identified Baldur’s Gate 3 as its first choice for evolving companion relationships. Upcoming sci-fi crew RPGs such as EXODUS and The Expanse: Osiris Reborn were still future or unreleased projects in that coverage, so they are watch-list possibilities rather than games to play now.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why was there never a Sonic Chronicles 2?
No sequel shipped, and the cliffhanger was never resolved. GameSpot’s 2026 retrospective identifies two commonly cited obstacles: EA’s purchase of BioWare did the project no favors, and comic writer and artist Ken Penders sued Sega and EA over alleged similarities between the game’s villains and his Archie Comics echidna clan.
GameSpot reports that the lawsuit was dismissed and that Sega is believed to have avoided those characters afterward to reduce the risk of further legal headaches. That account is a retrospective’s summary, not a substitute for court documents or an official Sega explanation. There is no announced sequel in the sources covered here. The game ends with an ominous “THE END?” title card, leaving its central cliffhanger unresolved.
What hardware do I need to play these DS RPGs?
A working Nintendo DS is the straightforward way to play the original DS cartridges; a 3DS or 2DS can also serve as used hardware for the broader 3DS library. The original DS cannot play 3DS titles, so check a game’s system before buying a cartridge or console.
The Nintendo DS launched in the United States on November 21, 2004, at an original MSRP of $149.99, according to ScreenRant’s 2026 hardware context. That is historical pricing, not what a used system costs today. Cartridges and working hardware are second-hand purchases in 2026, and their prices vary; no reliable current price is established for the recommendations in this guide.

For The World Ends With You, the original DS version is especially relevant because its dual-screen design was tailored to the hardware. It is available in a later Switch version, but ScreenRant argues that this does not fully recreate the original DS experience. For the other DS recommendations, the key practical distinction is whether a title is a DS or 3DS game: the latter requires 3DS-family hardware.
How should I choose among these games?
Pick based on the part of Sonic Chronicles you want to keep, not just the fact that both games are RPGs. The same title can point toward very different follow-ups depending on whether you cared most about the DS, the mascot cast, the touch-screen combat, or BioWare’s name.
- Keep the DS and get the closest party feel: Start with Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story.
- Keep the DS but move toward a classic epic: Choose Chrono Trigger for a tighter classic or Dragon Quest IX for a longer, more customizable journey.
- Keep using the stylus: Try The World Ends With You for combat built around the DS interface.
- Keep the mascot-RPG tone: Follow the Mario line, from Partners in Time to Super Mario RPG.
- Keep BioWare’s companion focus: Choose KOTOR, Mass Effect, or Dragon Age; choose Baldur’s Gate 3 for a current, reactive-party game.
- Want something more strategic or darker: Look at Devil Survivor rather than expecting another bright Sonic-style adventure.
How were these recommendations selected?
The recommendations are organized around three documented reasons readers seek games after Sonic Chronicles: same-system DS RPGs, mascot games with timed or party-based combat, and companion-focused RPGs associated with BioWare. The DS shortlist draws on Nintendo Life’s 2024 guide and 2026 coverage from ScreenRant and Gamer Koala; the BioWare path follows the studio comparisons made in contemporary reviews and GameSpot’s 2026 retrospective. The order prioritizes the nearest match first, then offers distinct alternatives by tone, combat, hardware, and narrative focus.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play Sonic Chronicles on Switch or through a digital re-release?
No confirmed Switch, Nintendo Switch Online, or other official digital re-release appears in the sources available for this guide. The established way to play it is with the original Nintendo DS game and compatible hardware.
How long is Sonic Chronicles?
There is no official publisher completion-time figure established here. VideoGamer’s Wesley Yin-Poole wrote in 2008 that it might not keep hardcore players happy for more than five or six hours; that is one critic’s judgment, not a guaranteed playtime.
Is Sonic Chronicles connected to the main Sonic story?
GameSpot’s 2026 feature implies that later canon treatment dropped the game, but that is the journalist’s characterization rather than a statement from Sega. It is safer to approach it as a self-contained Sonic RPG with an unresolved ending.
