Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut is the closest match if you want another open-world Japanese action adventure on PS5. For a different take, Rise of the Ronin adds branching choices and action-RPG combat, while Assassin’s Creed Shadows lets you switch between samurai and shinobi approaches. Sekiro and Nioh 2 Remastered are better treated as combat-first alternatives than as equally expansive open worlds. Ghost of Yōtei itself is a standalone story, so you do not need to play Tsushima first.

This ranking separates games that genuinely match the combination of Japanese setting, exploration and samurai action from games that mainly satisfy the sword-combat craving. That distinction matters: an interconnected world is not automatically an open world, and a game set in historical Asia is not necessarily a Japanese samurai adventure.

Name Best for Setting and play-style specification Scope or platform note Platforms listed Checked
Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut The closest overall match Open-world Japanese action adventure with katana fighting, archery, stealth, exploration and the Iki Island expansion Closest combination of setting, breadth and combat PS5 Oct 2026
Rise of the Ronin Action-RPG combat and choices Open-world 19th-century Japan with branching decisions, multiple weapons and period firearms More systems and decision-making than a focused single-journey adventure PS5 Oct 2026
Assassin’s Creed Shadows Switching between samurai and shinobi styles Feudal-Japan open world with Yasuke’s samurai play and Naoe’s shinobi play Two contrasting protagonists rather than one central samurai perspective PS5 Oct 2026
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Demanding sword combat Stealth and sword fighting in an interconnected world PlayStation lists it as PS4, not a native PS5 open-world release PS4 Oct 2026
Nioh 2 Remastered Challenging samurai and yokai combat Combat-focused action with Japanese supernatural themes Adjacent combat recommendation, not an equivalent expansive open world PS5 Oct 2026

The PlayStation product pages linked above were checked in October 2026. The order reflects how closely each title fits the combined request for a Japanese setting, exploration and samurai action. It is not a hands-on performance ranking, a review-score list or a claim about map size or playtime.

Which game is most like Ghost of Yōtei?

Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut is the strongest fit if you want the same broad combination of Japanese scenery, sword combat, stealth and open-world exploration. It is Sucker Punch’s earlier open-world Japanese action adventure, and its Director’s Cut includes the Iki Island expansion. The feature mix is unusually close: you can approach encounters with a katana, use archery, move through the countryside and rely on stealth when a direct fight is not what you want.

Ghost of Yōtei does not require that background. PlayStation’s US Ghost of Yōtei product page states, “From a story perspective, Ghost of Yōtei is not a direct sequel to Ghost of Tsushima.” That makes Tsushima a natural companion rather than compulsory homework. You can play Yōtei first, then return to Tsushima for another journey built around a similar Japanese action-adventure foundation, or start with Tsushima if you want the closest available preview of the format.

The Director’s Cut label is important when comparing editions. The recommendation is for the PS5 Director’s Cut, not an unspecified version. If you are shopping physically, the relevant search is Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut PS5 disc. Confirm that the listing is the PS5 Blu-ray package or the digital PS5 edition you intend to use, because edition names and upgrade routes determine what you receive.

Which alternatives add more choices or different play styles?

Rise of the Ronin and Assassin’s Creed Shadows both provide Japanese open worlds, but they answer “what should I play next?” in different ways. Rise is the choice for action-RPG structure, branching decisions, a broader weapon selection and a later historical period. Shadows is the choice for moving between two protagonists whose approaches are deliberately different. Neither is simply Tsushima with a new cast.

Rise of the Ronin: for action-RPG combat and branching decisions

Team NINJA’s Rise of the Ronin is set in 19th-century Japan. That period and its design priorities distinguish it from the earlier-feeling samurai journey many players associate with Ghost of Yōtei or Tsushima. The official description highlights branching decisions, multiple weapons and period firearms, so it suits someone who wants more visible role-playing structure and more ways to shape encounters.

Choose Rise when your ideal follow-up includes decisions with consequences in the campaign, an action-RPG approach to fighting and freedom to change weapons. The trade-off is tone and focus: you are moving into a later historical setting and a more system-heavy game rather than seeking an almost identical cinematic adventure. The open world makes it a genuine alternative for exploration, but the weapons and choices mean the moment-to-moment identity is its own.

PlayStation’s US page listed a Rise of the Ronin trial at the October 2026 check, and the game also appeared in the US PlayStation Plus Extra catalog then. Both details are time-sensitive. A trial shown on one regional page is not proof of worldwide access, and a catalog appearance is not a permanent inclusion. Check the current PlayStation Store page for your region before subscribing or planning to finish the game through a trial.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows: for two contrasting approaches

Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows is a PS5 open-world game set in feudal Japan. Its defining feature for this comparison is the split between Yasuke’s samurai play and Naoe’s shinobi play. PlayStation summarizes the premise directly: “You decide whether to play as a shinobi or samurai.” That is a meaningful difference from a game built around one central fighter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yasuke and Naoe are not presented as interchangeable skins. Recommend Shadows when you want to alternate between a more direct samurai approach and a stealth-oriented shinobi approach, and when exploring the same world through contrasting protagonists sounds more appealing than maintaining one uninterrupted viewpoint. The variety can make it a better fit for players who enjoy changing tactics from mission to mission.

Pick Shadows for breadth and role variety, not because both characters reproduce the exact feel of Atsu’s journey. Its feudal-Japan setting supports the historical-action fantasy many Yōtei players want, while the dual-protagonist structure gives it a different rhythm. If your priority is one focused katana-led adventure, Tsushima remains the closer match; if your priority is choice of approach, Shadows moves ahead.

Are Sekiro and Nioh 2 open-world samurai alternatives?

They are useful alternatives when demanding swordplay matters more than broad exploration. Neither belongs in the same open-world category as Tsushima, Rise of the Ronin or Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Treat them as adjacent recommendations: excellent answers to “what has challenging Japanese combat?” but not like-for-like replacements for a large countryside to roam.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Sekiro combines demanding sword fights, stealth and an interconnected world. That structure creates a strong sense of place and rewards learning enemy patterns, but “interconnected” should not be read as “open world.” The official PlayStation listing is for PS4, not a native PS5 release, so it also fails the strictest version of a “PS5 games like Ghost of Yōtei” request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Sekiro when the appeal of a blade-focused challenge outweighs the desire for optional wandering, broad travel and a conventional open-world map. It can satisfy the tension of stealth followed by a precise sword fight, yet its platform listing and world structure should be stated plainly before purchase. A PS5 owner should verify how the PS4 version is supplied in the store or through a disc before assuming a native PS5 edition exists.

Nioh 2 Remastered

Nioh 2 Remastered is a PS5 combat pick centered on challenging samurai and yokai encounters. The supernatural emphasis gives it a different flavor from a grounded historical adventure, while the remastered PS5 presentation makes it the more straightforward console match of the two combat-first recommendations.

Its place here is deliberately qualified. Nioh 2 is worth considering when you want demanding encounters, Japanese themes and a combat system to study, but it is not an equal substitute for an expansive open world. Buy it for the fighting and the samurai-versus-yokai premise, not because you expect the same exploration loop as Tsushima or Yōtei.

How do the five games compare by the features that matter?

Exploration: Tsushima, Rise of the Ronin and Shadows are the main open-world options. Sekiro’s interconnected world offers connected routes rather than the same broad open-world category, and Nioh 2 should be treated as combat-first. This is the most important scope distinction in the list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Historical setting: Tsushima and Yōtei share a Japanese action-adventure context; Rise is explicitly set in 19th-century Japan; Shadows uses feudal Japan; Sekiro and Nioh 2 are better described through their combat and world structures than as equivalent historical open-world simulations. Do not infer an identical era from the presence of swords alone.

Stealth and direct fighting: Tsushima combines katana fighting, archery and stealth in one open-world formula. Shadows divides emphasis between a samurai and a shinobi protagonist. Sekiro combines stealth with demanding sword fights, while Rise emphasizes multiple weapons, firearms and decisions. Nioh 2’s recommendation rests primarily on challenging combat.

Difficulty and systems: Sekiro is the clearest choice for a demanding sword-combat challenge. Nioh 2 is also a challenge-oriented combat pick. Rise adds action-RPG systems and branching decisions. Tsushima is the easiest recommendation to make for someone seeking a balanced action-adventure package, while Shadows is the clearest choice for switching between contrasting approaches.

PS5 status: Tsushima Director’s Cut, Rise of the Ronin, Shadows and Nioh 2 Remastered are the PS5 choices in this shortlist. PlayStation lists Sekiro as PS4. That does not erase Sekiro’s combat appeal, but it changes what “PS5 alternative” means when comparing native editions.

How should you choose among these games?

Start with the element of Ghost of Yōtei you most want to carry into your next game. The best choice changes depending on whether you are looking for a wide world, a particular combat emphasis, historical period, decision-making or the ability to change play styles.

  • Want the closest overall fit? Choose Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut for Japanese action-adventure exploration, katana fighting, archery, stealth and the Iki Island expansion.
  • Want a Japanese open world with more action-RPG structure? Choose Rise of the Ronin for branching decisions, multiple weapons, period firearms and its 19th-century setting.
  • Want to play as both a samurai and a shinobi? Choose Assassin’s Creed Shadows for Yasuke and Naoe’s contrasting approaches in feudal Japan.
  • Want the hardest-feeling sword challenge? Consider Sekiro, while remembering that PlayStation lists it as a PS4 title and describes an interconnected rather than equivalent open world.
  • Want samurai and yokai combat on a native PS5 release? Consider Nioh 2 Remastered, with the expectation that combat is the point rather than expansive exploration.

This method prevents a common buying mistake: treating every game with a Japanese setting and a sword as interchangeable. Decide first whether “like Yōtei” means the landscape, the stealth, the katana, the open-world structure or the difficulty. Then use the platform and edition notes to make sure the version you buy actually matches your console.

What should you check before buying or subscribing?

Edition names, console hardware and changing catalog listings can affect access as much as the game’s features. Check the store page for the exact edition and access route you plan to use, particularly if you are buying a disc or relying on a subscription catalog.

Disc purchases and console compatibility

A PS5 Blu-ray game disc requires a disc-capable PS5. PlayStation specifically warns that a disc-free PS5 cannot use PS4 discs for the Ghost of Tsushima upgrade path. If your console has no drive, select a digital edition or confirm the applicable upgrade terms before ordering a physical copy. Do not assume that owning a PS4 disc automatically grants a usable route on a digital-only console.

The same practical check applies when comparing a native PS5 game with a PS4 listing. Sekiro’s PlayStation page identifies the game as PS4, so verify whether you want a physical PS4 disc, a digital PS4 purchase playable on your hardware or a different title with a native PS5 edition. Store listings, regional offers and upgrade terms can differ.

Ghost of Yōtei editions

Ghost of Yōtei’s PlayStation page distinguishes the Blu-ray Standard Edition from a Complete Edition that lists additional story and survival-mode content. The physical Standard Edition should not be assumed to include every extra associated with the Complete Edition. Compare the contents line by line before choosing, especially if the additional story or survival mode is the reason you are buying.

A Ghost of Yōtei Standard Edition PS5 Blu-ray search can help locate the physical version for an edition comparison, but it is not an alternative recommendation in this article. The closest-match purchase is Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut; Yōtei is the game you are comparing against.

Trials and subscription catalogs

At the October 2026 check, PlayStation’s US pages showed Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut and Rise of the Ronin in the US PlayStation Plus Extra catalog, and the Rise of the Ronin page listed a trial. Those are snapshots of regional storefront information, not permanent guarantees. Verify your own region’s current catalog, trial length and eligibility before subscribing.

A catalog listing can also change while you are partway through a game. If keeping access matters, compare the cost of a direct purchase with the subscription route and check whether the edition in the catalog is the one you expect. Do not choose a game solely because a trial or Extra listing appeared on a US page at an earlier check.

Why is Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty not included?

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is available on PS5 and comes from Team NINJA, so it may appear in broad searches for difficult action games from the same developer as Rise of the Ronin. Its official setting, however, is fantasy Later Han and Three Kingdoms China. That does not meet this article’s Japan-and-samurai premise, so adding it would blur the distinction between a Japanese open-world alternative and a different historical-fantasy action game.

How were these games selected?

The ranking follows how directly each title answers searches such as “games like Ghost of Yōtei on PS5,” “open-world samurai games on PS5” and “what to play after Ghost of Yōtei.” The main choices match more of the relevant combination—Japanese setting, exploration and samurai action—while the adjacent picks are included for combat appeal and clearly labeled as different in scope or platform.

  • Exploration: whether the product description supports an open-world recommendation or only an interconnected-world or combat-first one.
  • Setting and era: whether the game offers a Japanese setting and, where stated, a distinct historical period such as 19th-century Japan or feudal Japan.
  • Combat and play style: whether the key distinction is stealth, sword fighting, action-RPG systems, weapon variety, firearms or switching between protagonists.
  • PS5 fit: whether PlayStation lists a native PS5 game or, in Sekiro’s case, a PS4 title.
  • Access caveats: edition contents, disc compatibility and catalog or trial listings where the product pages provide them.

No comparable map-size, playtime or audience statistic is established by the product pages used for this comparison. It would be misleading to rank these games by hours, square kilometres or storefront snippets. The useful distinctions are the ones the listings actually support: setting, platform, scope, combat emphasis, edition contents and access route.

Why is Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty missing from the shortlist?

The Bottom Line

Start with Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut for the closest open-world Japanese action-adventure match. Choose Rise of the Ronin for action-RPG choices, Assassin’s Creed Shadows for separate samurai and shinobi protagonists, Sekiro for demanding PS4 sword combat, and Nioh 2 Remastered for challenging PS5 samurai-and-yokai encounters. Check your edition, disc drive and regional catalog before buying.
