OpenAI advises: “Please do not enter sensitive information that you would not want reviewed or used.”
First, identify which ChatGPT experience you’re using
Privacy behavior depends on whether you’re using a regular consumer chat, ChatGPT Health, or an account managed by an organization. Do not assume that a control or default in one applies to the others.

These are broad distinctions, not a guarantee that every account has the same features or defaults. For the latest account-specific options, check the settings and notices shown in your own ChatGPT account.
What does turning off model training actually do?
In a regular consumer account, open Settings → Data controls and turn off Improve the model for everyone. OpenAI says: “When Improve the model for everyone is off, your new conversations won’t be used to train OpenAI models.” This applies to new conversations; it does not, by itself, erase chats already in your history or make conversations invisible there. Training, chat history, memory, retention, and access are separate issues. A conversation can be excluded from model improvement and still remain in history or be handled for service and safety purposes. Settings may differ depending on whether you are signed in, your plan, and whether an organization manages your workspace.
What Temporary Chat does—and does not—protect
Temporary Chat is useful when you do not want a conversation to appear in chat history or create or update memories. OpenAI also says these chats are not used for model improvement while temporary. However, OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes. If you save the conversation, it becomes a regular chat. Read the Temporary Chat FAQ.

So, “temporary” does not mean “never retained.” If you are considering it for a sensitive medical question, weigh that stated retention against what you are comfortable sharing.
How ChatGPT Health differs
ChatGPT Health has distinct stated protections for connected medical records and Apple Health information: OpenAI says that data, and conversations using it, are not used to train foundation models or target ads. Other conversations follow your account’s regular model-improvement setting. Verify the feature’s availability and which sources you can connect in your own account; access can change over time. OpenAI’s announcement page describes a July 23, 2026 update about launch to U.S. users aged 18 or older on web and iOS. Check OpenAI’s ChatGPT Health announcement.

Those protections do not mean health data is never handled or accessible. OpenAI’s Health Privacy Notice says data is used to provide the service and that a limited number of authorized personnel and trusted service providers might access Health Features data to improve model safety unless you opt out. OpenAI says synced data is deleted from its systems within 30 days after you disconnect a source. But information already included in chat history remains until you delete the conversations containing it. Disconnecting a record or Apple Health connection is therefore not the same as removing the related chat. See OpenAI’s ChatGPT Health information.

Consider third-party GPTs and connected actions
A custom GPT action can send information to a third party. Once data is sent, that recipient’s privacy policy applies, and it may allow longer retention or other uses. Before including medical details in a GPT or using an action, check where the information will go and review the recipient’s policy. OpenAI’s Temporary Chat FAQ.
A safer way to ask a medical question
As a practical precaution, include only what is necessary to get a useful response. Remove names, addresses, dates of birth, account numbers, and other identifying details when they are not needed. Avoid entering another person’s identifiable health information unless you have the appropriate authority or consent. These steps reduce unnecessary disclosure; they are not a guarantee of privacy.

- Review the controls and privacy terms for that specific account and feature.
- Consider whether the question can be answered without identifying information or detailed records.
- Check for third-party actions before sharing information through a GPT or connected service.
- For urgent symptoms, diagnosis, or a consequential treatment decision, contact a qualified healthcare professional rather than relying on ChatGPT.
