Choose a typewriter by how comfortably the child can use it and what they want to do with it—not by age or appearance alone. A manual machine is tactile and works without electricity, while an electronic model usually makes typing and correcting easier. For any used typewriter, check its condition, keyboard layout, paper handling, and compatible ribbon before buying.
Choose the typewriter for the child’s intended use
For letters, journaling, and creative writing, a portable manual typewriter can offer a satisfying mechanical experience without needing power. Its keys may require more finger force, and correcting mistakes is less convenient than on many electronic models. An electronic typewriter can be a better fit when lighter keystrokes and easier correction matter, but it needs electrical power and its features and replacement supplies depend on the exact model.
Neither type is automatically the better choice. If possible, let the child try the keys before you buy: key force and spacing differ between machines, and comfort is more useful than a label such as “portable” or “for children.”

Inspect a used typewriter before paying
Looks and age alone do not establish that a machine works. Ask the seller what was tested or serviced, and, where possible, try a short typing sample. Check that the paper feeds properly and that the print is clear and consistent. - Press several keys and check that their action feels manageable for the child.
- Feed paper through the machine and watch for slipping, skewing, or trouble advancing it.
- Type a short sample to assess print clarity and whether keys strike consistently.
- Confirm the keyboard layout and make sure the machine handles the paper size you intend to use.
- Ask for a specific account of any service or repairs rather than relying on the word “restored.”
Check the layout, ribbon, and other supplies
Before buying, identify the manufacturer and exact model number. Confirm that the keyboard layout suits the child, then check which ribbon and any other supplies that model takes. Ribbon compatibility varies; do not assume that a ribbon described as “universal” will work in every typewriter. If supplies are difficult to identify or obtain, factor that into the purchase decision.
There is no established universal age recommendation
The available sources do not establish a validated age cutoff for typewriter use or a typewriter-specific safety evaluation covering hazards such as pinching or electrical risks. A retailer markets some portable manual typewriters to children and young people, but that is seller guidance—not an official age recommendation or safety certification.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) defines a children’s product as a consumer product designed or intended primarily for children 12 years old or younger. Its classification framework considers factors such as manufacturer statements, packaging and advertising, common consumer recognition, and age-determination guidelines. The CPSC also says that a child’s use of an adult product does not, by itself, make it a children’s product. This is a general classification framework, not a safety verdict on a particular typewriter.
Caregivers should inspect the exact machine, consider the child’s ability to use it, and supervise as appropriate. Allow space for setup and think about who will help with ribbons and maintenance.

Follow the instructions for the exact model
Electric and electronic typewriters have model-specific operating instructions. For example, the Royal AX160-01 manual says to use a properly rated power source, avoid inserting metal objects, switch the typewriter off when finished, and not attempt self-repair. It warns: “Never attempt to repair it yourself.” These instructions apply to the Royal AX160-01; follow the manual supplied for any other model rather than treating its warnings as universal rules.
