1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBefore funding a prediction-market account, understand exactly what a contract pays, how much you can lose, what fees apply, whether you can exit, and what protections cover your particular account. Event contracts can lose their full purchase amount, and a quoted price is not a guaranteed probability or return. Deposit only risk capital—money left after living expenses and savings needs.
How event contracts work—and what the price means
Many event contracts are structured as yes-or-no questions with a fixed payout, commonly $1, and expire at a specified time or when the event concludes. Other contracts offer multiple outcomes or partial payouts, so the terms of the specific contract matter. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) describes these common structures in its consumer guidance on prediction markets.
For example, the CFTC illustrates a 70-cent “yes” contract that pays $1 if the event occurs: the gross profit would be 30 cents before fees and taxes. If the prediction is wrong, the purchaser loses the amount invested. The example explains the arithmetic; it is not a promise of a 30-cent return. A market price reflects what participants are currently willing to pay, not a guaranteed or necessarily calibrated probability.
Risks to understand before you deposit
You can lose the amount paid
If the contract resolves against your position, you may lose the full amount you paid for it. A defined payout makes the possible contract outcome clearer; it does not make the trade safe. Keep this contract-level loss separate from other risks, such as platform access or the ability to sell before settlement.

Fees and taxes change the break-even point
Commissions, platform fees, penalties, other charges, and taxes can reduce a return or turn a small gross gain into a net loss. Check the current fee schedule for the exact platform and contract, and include applicable taxes when assessing a trade. Do not assume costs are identical across operators or markets.
An early exit may be costly or unavailable
You may be able to sell or offset a position before it settles, but the price available then can be worse than the price you paid. Some complex contracts attract fewer participants and can have lower liquidity. An order you can submit is not a guarantee that it will fill quickly, or at a favorable price. Check bids, asks, and market depth rather than relying on the assumption that you can always exit cleanly.

Settlement wording can differ from the headline
Read the contract rules before trading. They determine what counts as the event, how it is resolved, who makes the determination, the deadline, and the payout. A familiar-sounding headline may not match the contract’s defined outcome or resolution source.
Regulation is not loss insurance
Oversight and customer-fund rules depend on the operator, its legal entity, and the account arrangement. CFTC-regulated exchanges and intermediaries are subject to oversight and rules, and certain intermediaries must follow customer-fund protection requirements. The CFTC cautions that unregistered entities outside the United States may offer little or no protections. Regulation does not prevent trading losses, and it does not mean every account has identical safeguards.

Integrity problems and conflicts can affect a market
Misuse of nonpublic information, fraud, manipulation, wash sales, and other prohibited practices can undermine market integrity. In a February 25, 2026 advisory, the CFTC’s Division of Enforcement described two cases handled by Kalshi: a candidate apparently traded a contract on their own candidacy, and a YouTube-channel editor likely traded with advance knowledge of videos. Kalshi imposed penalties and suspensions in those cases. The advisory describes specific incidents; it does not establish how common such conduct is. The CFTC says it can police illegal trading practices on designated contract markets and notes exchanges’ audit-trail, surveillance, and enforcement duties.
Scams can imitate legitimate platforms
Be wary of promises of large payoffs or “free money,” celebrity endorsements, glowing reviews, and recommendations from people you have recently met online. Verify that the site and app belong to the claimed registered entity; one practical check is to follow app links from the operator’s official website.

Easy access can encourage overspending
Decide on a firm limit before trading, and do not deposit money needed for bills or savings goals. The CFTC advises using risk capital and warns against enticements that encourage people to risk more than they intended. As the CFTC puts it, “All speculation involves risk.”
What to check before funding an account
- Confirm the operator and your eligibility. Identify the precise legal entity, check its registration and whether its service is available where you live, and verify that you are using its official site or app. Do not assume one operator’s status applies to another.
- Read the contract rules. Find the event definition, resolution source, decision maker, deadline, and payout. Make sure the defined outcome—not just the short market title—matches what you intend to trade.
- Calculate the full cost. Review the current fee schedule and account for commissions, other charges, and taxes in any expected-return calculation.
- Inspect the exit market. Check current bids and asks and the available market depth. Consider whether selling would require accepting a substantial price concession.
- Understand account protections and access. Read the account agreement to learn how customer funds are handled, when you can access funds, what account records you receive, and how to submit a complaint. Protections depend on the regulated entity and account arrangement.
- Check integrity rules. Review prohibitions on trading with confidential information or influence over an outcome, along with the platform’s market-surveillance and enforcement rules.
- Set your limit before depositing. Choose an amount you can afford to lose without affecting living expenses or savings needs, and do not increase it because of promotional pressure or a recent win.
What loss figures can—and cannot—tell you
The CFTC guidance explains contract mechanics and risks but does not establish a representative consumer loss rate or a typical deposit outcome. A percentage from a platform or search result should not be treated as a general statistic unless its underlying study, sample, dates, and methodology are clear. The dollar penalties and suspension periods in the CFTC’s 2026 advisory are details of those specific cases, not typical user losses or a measure of how often violations occur.
