Haunted Chocolatier is an upcoming RPG and simulation game by Eric Barone, the solo creator of Stardew Valley. You play a chocolatier in a haunted castle, gathering ingredients, making chocolates, and running a shop in a new town. As of October 2026, PC is the only confirmed platform; there is no release date or estimated year, and the game is planned as single-player. Barone has described it as more focused on action-RPG combat and adventuring than Stardew Valley, while keeping the social feel of a town game.

When does Haunted Chocolatier come out?

There is no announced release date, release window, or estimated year. Barone has said he does not want to commit to even an estimated date while the game is in development. His latest public comments through October 2026 describe ongoing work, not a scheduled launch.

A date of 2030 sometimes appears in online discussions, but it is not an announcement. On January 29, 2026, Barone explained that in 2025 he had been asked whether the game might come out within five years and answered, “I hope so.” He said that was very different from saying it would release in 2030; his position remained that the game would come out when it was done.

Nor should a database listing of December 31, 2097 be read as a date. GameSpot’s game hub has used that as a placeholder, not as a statement from Barone or the publisher. Treat a release date as real only when it appears in an official announcement or a genuine store listing.

What has happened in development so far?

Development began in 2020, according to Wikipedia’s 2026 entry citing Barone’s account. The game was announced on October 21, 2021 with a gameplay trailer. Barone later paused much of his work on it while preparing the large Stardew Valley 1.6 update, which grew beyond a technical patch. On December 5, 2024, he said he was returning to Haunted Chocolatier and had already made a vertical slice—a playable section intended to represent the game’s core experience.

In January 2026, Barone rejected claims that the project had been abandoned or was being folded into Stardew Valley. He said work was productive. A May 2026 Game Informer interview, reported by Kotaku, described his workweek as about five days on Haunted Chocolatier and two on Stardew Valley. He also said the new game could ship before Stardew Valley 1.7, but offered no guarantee. In a June 25, 2026 blog post, he discussed reworking the recipe-book interface.

Barone’s August 30, 2026 check-in said he was making progress and would not compromise quality by rushing the game. In an October 12, 2026 interview with British GQ, he said he was still working alone and was not letting anyone play the unfinished game until he was ready to show it. Those statements support “in development,” not a launch prediction.

Which platforms will Haunted Chocolatier be on?

PC is the only platform Barone has confirmed. The official Haunted Chocolatier site FAQ says, “The only platform I am 100% certain about is PC,” adding that he has every intention of bringing the game to other major platforms.

That distinction matters: an intention to port the game is not a confirmed platform, release window, or promise of a simultaneous launch. Barone has not named a PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, or Switch 2 version. He has said he will likely get help with console ports when the game is close to finished. His history of bringing Stardew Valley to consoles and mobile is precedent, but it does not establish which versions Haunted Chocolatier will receive.

A Windows release is commonly listed, but the official commitment is phrased as PC. No specific storefront has been confirmed in the cited material: there is no verified Steam, Epic, or GOG listing, and no Steam Deck verification status. A game’s PC commitment alone does not establish those details.

Will Haunted Chocolatier have multiplayer or co-op?

No multiplayer or co-op is currently planned. Barone’s FAQ describes it as single-player: “It’s currently just single-player. I have no current plans to make it multiplayer.” That is the supported answer unless he announces a change.

Stardew Valley eventually received co-op, but that does not predict the design of this game. It launched as a single-player experience before multiplayer was added, whereas Barone has specifically said he has no current plan to make Haunted Chocolatier multiplayer. Speculation that fans or modders might create unofficial co-op is not a confirmed feature or a substitute for an official mode.

What kind of game is Haunted Chocolatier?

It combines a town-life framework with action-RPG adventuring. Its central loop is to gather ingredients, make chocolate, and run a chocolate shop; the shop takes the place of the farm as the player’s main livelihood. Barone calls it a “town game” because the player moves to a new town, gets to know its residents, and pursues goals, but he says the core gameplay and theme differ substantially from Stardew Valley.

Chocolate-making and the shop

Making and selling chocolate is not just a premise: it is the main business system. Barone has said there will be more than one way to make chocolate, including a more intuitive, whimsical approach and more conventional or mechanical methods. He has described reasons to use different methods, but detailed recipes, rules, and balancing have not been established publicly.

Official footage has shown shop customization, including different counter styles, and chocolates displayed for customers. Ghosts have appeared carrying chocolates and helping at the counter. A trailer description from GameSpot also noted a portal from the shop to an area for combat and ingredient gathering, as well as gift-giving with townspeople. These are details from development footage, not a guarantee that every shown system or presentation will remain unchanged.

Combat and exploration

Combat is a larger part of the game than it is in Stardew Valley. In the October 2026 British GQ interview, Barone described the focus as adventuring, finding equipment, and becoming more powerful, with monsters and boss fights. He framed it as a game for players who enjoy going into the mines in Stardew Valley.

Footage and press descriptions have shown swords, a bow and arrow, shields, and other off-hand items. Barone has said the combat was coded and drawn from scratch rather than copied from Stardew Valley. His combat explanation gives shields a tactical role: many attacks can be blocked, and blocking usually stuns an enemy, creating a window in which the player can attack faster. He has described this as rewarding patient play, while also allowing a more aggressive style. Other off-hand items are intended to support different approaches.

Barone told Game Informer in May 2026 that the game was “way bigger” than Stardew Valley in the number of maps and monsters, the depth of the item system, and the equipment options. This is his description of scope, not a published count of maps, enemies, or items. A separate social post, as reported by PC Gamer, also described the world as larger than Stardew Valley.

Relationships, fishing, and tone

Relationships are planned, but their exact system is undecided. In a 2021 interview with VGKami, Barone said there would be relationships like those in Stardew Valley, while adding that he expected to handle some things differently. He has not specifically confirmed marriage, children, or a list of romance candidates, so “relationships” should not be taken as a promise of any particular social feature.

Fishing has been confirmed by Barone in a social-media reply, as reported by PC Gamer and repeated in Wikipedia’s 2026 entry. No detailed fishing mechanics or minigame have been announced in the cited material.

The haunted setting does not mean the game is being presented as horror. In the 2021 announcement, Barone said he intended it to be positive, uplifting, and life-affirming, while describing it as channeling “the energy of the moon” compared with Stardew Valley’s “energy of the sun.” In May 2026 he characterized the atmosphere as darker and creepy, rather than totally horrifying. The tone is therefore eerie but not, by his account, evil or bleak.

Is Haunted Chocolatier a Stardew Valley sequel?

It has not been confirmed as a sequel, nor has Barone confirmed that it shares Stardew Valley’s setting. The official FAQ says he is not ready to reveal whether the game takes place in that world. In a separate statement reported by Polygon in June 2022, he said there would be “some connection” while emphasizing that Haunted Chocolatier should have its own identity. Those comments leave the exact relationship open; they do not establish that the games share a town, timeline, or cast.

The games do have a clear creative connection: both are town games made by Barone, and the newer title retains social relationships and a top-down pixel-art look. Their core activities differ. One centers on farming and has lighter combat; the other centers on a chocolate business and gives more weight to combat, equipment, monsters, and bosses.

Who is making the game, and why is development taking time?

Eric Barone, known as ConcernedApe, is directing, designing, programming, creating the art, and composing the music. He has said he is working alone and self-publishing. He may bring in help for console ports and localization when the game is close to completion, but he has not announced a larger development team.

The game uses a new engine built with C# and MonoGame rather than Stardew Valley’s older XNA-based technology. Barone has said some code can be reused, but the new game’s combat is being built from scratch. In a 2021 VGKami interview, he explained that he moved from XNA to MonoGame because MonoGame is cross-platform, open-source, and actively maintained, while XNA is abandoned. A new engine is one reason not to assume the project is simply an expansion that can be completed by transferring existing game content.

Barone has also chosen a development and release model that avoids some external deadlines. In December 2024 he ruled out early access, crowdfunding, and pre-orders, saying he did not want the pressure of finishing on a timeline. He has said the announcement itself created pressure, but he would rather keep working until the game met his standard. His combat blog stated that he would not release it unless he personally found it fun and compelling. In August 2026 he reiterated that he would not rush it, and in October he compared showing an unfinished game to taking a turkey out of the oven before it was done.

That approach makes public progress less predictable: the game can remain in active development without a public build, store listing, or release estimate. Barone has said he already enjoys playing an unfinished build, but he is not treating that as a signal that a public version is imminent. He has also said he will handle localization later; English is the only language he has said is certain so far, and he described localization work as not yet close.

What is confirmed, and what should players treat as unannounced?

The project is real and active, but its public feature list is not a final specification. Barone has repeatedly cautioned that development footage and systems may change before release. The clearest way to read announcements is to distinguish a stated intention from a platform, feature, or date that has actually been committed.

  • Confirmed or directly described: a PC release; single-player; a chocolatier in a haunted castle; gathering ingredients, making chocolate, and running a shop; relationships; fishing; action-RPG combat; monsters and boss fights; and Barone’s intention to self-publish.
  • Intended but not specified: bringing the game to other major platforms, and getting help with console ports and localization near completion.
  • Not established: a launch date or year, named console versions, a storefront or Steam page, a price, rating, runtime, Steam Deck status, official modding support, marriage, children, or the precise connection to Stardew Valley.
  • Explicitly ruled out for the current plan: early access, crowdfunding, and pre-orders. That is not the same thing as a permanent promise that no plans can ever change, but it is Barone’s stated approach.

There are no published sales, wishlist, budget, headcount, or player-count figures for Haunted Chocolatier; it is unreleased and has no store page in the cited information. Figures for Stardew Valley should not be attributed to the new game. For context only, British GQ reported in 2026 that Stardew Valley had sold over 50 million copies and still regularly reached more than 100,000 concurrent Steam players a decade after release.

Frequently Asked Questions
