Expect a live performance of game music arranged for an orchestra, choir, ensemble, or combination of musicians. Many productions add projected game footage, synchronized lighting, guest soloists, electronic percussion, narration, or audience interaction, but no single format is standard. A multi-game production can feel like a cinematic concert, while a single-game show may present one soundtrack with a smaller ensemble and curated visuals.
Plan around the specific event listing rather than assumptions about the category. Confirm the local start time, estimated finish, program, age guidance, photography policy, seating information, accessibility services, and rules for costumes or props before you leave home.

What happens at a video game music concert?
The core experience is live music, but the stage presentation can range from a traditional symphony setup to a multimedia production. Video Games Live describes orchestral and choral performances combined with video, lighting, soloists, electronic percussion, special effects, and interactive segments. Its FAQ compares the atmosphere with a rock concert combined with orchestral music and game visuals.
Other productions are more focused. The Witcher in Concert presents music from The Witcher 3 with a 14-musician ensemble and visuals from the game. The Music of Square Enix listing describes symphonic arrangements accompanied by high-definition game visuals. In practical terms, you may spend part of the evening watching a screen, lighting cues, or stage effects and the rest concentrating on the musicians.

How do video game concert formats differ?
Check the production’s scope and presentation before buying tickets. The following examples show why two events advertised as video game concerts can feel very different.
| Production | Musical scope | Performers and presentation | What is established about timing or content |
|---|---|---|---|
| Video Games Live | Music from many games; the program can change by performance | Orchestra and choir formats may include electronic percussion, guest performers, lighting, video, special effects, and interactive sections | The official FAQ estimates about 2½ hours including an intermission and says individual performances use roughly 18–20 segments drawn from a catalog of more than 200 |
| The Witcher in Concert | A single-game program centered on The Witcher 3 | 14-musician ensemble with game visuals | The official page recommends an audience over 16 because mature-game scenes are included; a runtime is not stated on the cited page |
| The Music of Square Enix | Music associated with Square Enix titles, as described by the event billing | Symphonic arrangements with high-definition game visuals | Use the venue listing for the local schedule and any program changes; a standard runtime is not stated on the cited page |
These are examples, not a universal specification. An orchestra’s instrumentation, the use of a choir, the amount of narration, and the role of screens can all change from one presenter or venue to another.
How long is a video game music concert?
There is no category-wide runtime. For Video Games Live, the official FAQ gives an approximate duration of two and a half hours, including a 15–20 minute intermission, and warns that local orchestras, venues, and promoters can affect the length.

The larger figure is the size of the available catalog, not the number played in one night. Treat all of these numbers as Video Games Live’s own approximate description rather than a standard for every concert.
Before arranging transportation or childcare, open the local ticket page and check:
- When doors open and when the performance begins.
- The listed or estimated finish time.
- Whether an intermission is scheduled.
- Whether the venue marks times or programs as approximate or subject to change.
Will they play music from my favorite game?
Only the event’s published program can answer that with confidence. Multi-game productions draw from a broad catalog, but a changing setlist means a favorite title is never guaranteed unless the presenter specifically lists it. A single-game concert is the more predictable choice when its advertised title is one you want to hear.

Look for a current program on the presenter, orchestra, or venue page and check it again near the performance date. Even when a production has a large catalog, the local orchestra, guest artists, licensing arrangements, and show length can influence which segments appear.
Are video game music concerts suitable for children?
Age suitability is event-specific, so read the listing for the exact performance. Video Games Live presents itself as family oriented and intended for gamers and non-gamers, while a Utah Symphony listing gives a general guideline of age five and older and asks parents to consider whether a child can sit quietly through the performance.
The guidance can be stricter for a game with mature material. The official Witcher in Concert page recommends an audience over 16 because scenes from the mature-rated game are included. Do not infer that recommendation for unrelated concerts, and do not assume a family-oriented label means every segment is suitable for every child.
Questions to answer before bringing a child
- Does the venue publish a minimum age or content advisory?
- Can the child remain seated and reasonably quiet during extended music passages?
- Will intense imagery, combat footage, frightening scenes, or mature themes appear on the screen?
- What is the venue’s policy for leaving and re-entering with a child?
What should you wear and bring?
Unless the venue publishes a dress code, choose comfortable clothing for a seated indoor performance and bring only items allowed by the venue. There is no need to match a costume to the game, although attendees sometimes dress in character when the event permits it.
Costumes and props are governed locally. The Utah Symphony listing, for example, prohibits imitation or replica weapons as costume props and says attendees may be searched. That is an event-specific rule, so read the exact venue page before carrying foam, plastic, metal, or oversized accessories.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUseful preparations include:
- Wear layers if the hall temperature is difficult to predict.
- Keep your ticket, identification, and any age-related documentation accessible.
- Check bag-size, prohibited-item, and security-screening rules.
- Plan medication, hearing protection, or other personal aids according to venue guidance.
Where should you sit?
The best seat depends on whether you value a balanced orchestral sound, a clear view of the screen, or proximity to performers. Video Games Live says audiences and promoters often recommend approximately five to 20 rows back in the center or the front rows of a balcony, while stressing that every venue is different.
Rank #3
Use the venue’s seating chart rather than applying that suggestion mechanically. Center sections usually make synchronized visuals easier to follow, while a balcony can provide a broad view of the stage and screens. If you need wheelchair spaces, companion seating, aisle access, or an unobstructed view, contact the venue before purchasing because accessible locations and policies vary.
Can you take photos or record video?
Video Games Live says personal photography or video is permitted in principle, but also warns that some venues and symphonies prohibit it. The venue’s policy takes precedence over the production’s general guidance.
Check the event page and listen to announcements when you arrive. If recording is allowed, keep the device from blocking another person’s view and follow any restrictions on where or when cameras may be used. A different presenter may ban recording entirely, even when another concert allows it.
How do tickets, VIP access, and meet-and-greets work?
Ticket prices are not fixed for the category. Video Games Live says pricing varies by city, venue, orchestra or choir, and production costs; examples in its FAQ are not current quotes for your date. Buy through the official presenter, orchestra, or venue ticketing page and read the terms attached to the specific performance.
Optional extras also depend on the production and date. Video Games Live describes a post-show meet-and-greet for its ticket holders and a limited paid VIP experience, but those benefits should not be assumed for another concert or another city. Confirm whether an upgrade is available, what it includes, and whether the time or location is announced only after the show.
How should you compare two video game concerts?
Compare the details that affect the experience, not just the game titles in the marketing. These questions expose the practical differences:
- Scope: Is it a many-game program, a single-game presentation, or a publisher-focused evening?
- Musical format: Will you hear a full orchestra and choir, a smaller ensemble, or another arrangement?
- Visual production: Does the listing promise game footage, synchronized effects, lighting, or a primarily traditional concert setup?
- Program certainty: Is a soundtrack or setlist published, or does the presenter describe a changing selection?
- Age and content: Are there minimum ages or warnings about mature scenes?
- Length: Is an intermission listed, and are doors and finish times provided?
- Venue rules: What applies to seating, accessibility, bags, costumes, props, late arrival, and photography?
- Cost and extras: What is the price for the selected date, and are VIP or meet-and-greet options actually offered?
What should you check before leaving home?
Use the official event page as your final source because schedules, programs, and rules can change.

- Read the current program or content note and decide whether it suits everyone in your group.
- Review age guidance, late-seating procedures, accessibility arrangements, bag limits, costume restrictions, and prop rules.
- Check the photography and recording policy for that venue, not just the production’s general FAQ.
- Verify ticket terms, seat locations, transfer rules, and any upgrade or meet-and-greet instructions.
- Plan parking or public transport with the possibility of an intermission and a variable finish time.
For Video Games Live, the official FAQ and homepage describe the production and may identify local dates. Venue listings such as the Utah Symphony page and the OVO Arena Wembley page provide the rules and schedule for their own performances.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is the atmosphere like if you are not a gamer?
You do not need to know every game to follow the concert. Video Games Live explicitly describes its audience as including gamers and non-gamers, and the music, projected imagery, and live performance provide context even when a title is unfamiliar.
If you prefer to recognize melodies, read the published program beforehand. If you are attending with someone who wants a particular game, explain that a multi-game show can change its selections and that recognition is not guaranteed.
What should you expect during the performance?
Plan for a sequence of contrasting segments rather than one continuous symphony. A show may move from a full orchestral arrangement to a soloist, choir, electronic percussion, narration, interactive material, or a visual-heavy passage, followed by an intermission and another group of pieces.
Follow usher instructions about entering, leaving, and returning to your seat. The exact late-seating procedure, accessibility support, and any restrictions on illuminated devices are controlled by the venue, so ask staff rather than relying on rules from a different hall.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I attend a video game music concert alone?
Yes. Tickets are sold for individual seats, and the performance does not require group participation. Choose a seat near an aisle if you prefer easier access during the intermission, and check the venue’s late-entry policy in case your travel plans are uncertain.
Do I need to play the games beforehand to understand the concert?
No. Visuals and program notes can identify the setting and characters, while the arrangements stand on their own as live music. Listening to a soundtrack in advance is optional and is mainly useful if you want to recognize themes immediately.
What happens if I arrive after the music starts?
Many halls delay late arrivals until an appropriate pause, but the timing and permitted entrance point are venue decisions. Leave extra travel time and read the event’s late-seating notice so you know whether you may wait in the lobby for an usher’s signal.

Are recordings or albums the same as attending the concert?
Not necessarily. A studio album captures a fixed recording, while a live show can change its segments, guest performers, visuals, and orchestration by date. Video Games Live promotes releases such as its LEVEL 6 album and a limited-edition double vinyl on its homepage, but availability and the match to your local setlist should be verified.
Will there be merchandise at the venue?
Merchandise is a presenter or venue decision and is not guaranteed. If an album, vinyl release, program booklet, or other item matters to you, check the official event or presenter page rather than assuming a merchandise table will be available.
