Stay on the train unless railway staff or emergency services tell you to leave. Never step onto the tracks or try to walk to a station. Check your operator’s official updates, ask staff what will happen next, and keep your ticket and journey details. Refund and compensation rules depend on where you are travelling; the rights below cover Great Britain and the EU, not every country.
What to do while the train is stopped
- Wait for instructions. Stay aboard unless railway staff or emergency services direct you to leave. If you cannot hear or understand the instructions, ask a member of staff. Do not attempt to walk along the railway or reach another station on foot.
- Find out the plan. Listen to announcements and check the operator’s official app, website, or station information screens. Ask whether there is an estimated delay, whether the train will continue or terminate, and what alternative service or transport is authorized. The UK Office of Rail and Road says operators should provide prominent online disruption warnings and duration estimates, and align announcements with passenger information screens: ORR passenger information guidance.
- Tell staff if you need help. If you have a disability, health condition, or urgent welfare need, let train staff know promptly and ask what assistance is available. Wait for the operator to confirm what it can provide.
- Keep a record. Save your ticket or booking confirmation. Note the date, train, route, scheduled and actual arrival times, and any instructions or announcements. Keep receipts for expenses; if it is safe and useful, save screenshots of service notices.
- Check before spending more. Ask staff or the operator before buying another ticket, taking a taxi, or booking accommodation. Whether self-arranged costs can be reimbursed depends on the applicable rules and the operator’s authorization.
Should you continue, reroute, or abandon the journey?
Ask the train company about the next available train, rerouting, replacement transport, and whether your ticket remains valid. Compare the expected arrival time with any onward connections, and confirm the cost and authorization of alternatives before choosing.
In the EU, when arrival is expected to be at least 60 minutes late, passengers have the right to choose qualifying rerouting at the earliest opportunity or at a later date, without additional cost, subject to the applicable circumstances and rules. See Your Europe: rail passenger rights.
If you do not travel, or cannot complete the journey, an unused-ticket refund may apply instead of delay compensation. In Great Britain, National Rail says disruption-related unused tickets can be refunded without fees by the original retailer. Updated refund rules took effect on 1 April 2026; for tickets bought before that date, the applicable terms are those in force when the ticket was purchased. Refunds, delay compensation, and assistance are different

These are separate claims: a refund concerns an unused ticket, delay compensation concerns a journey made, and reimbursement concerns particular expenses. The rules are jurisdiction-specific, and an incident on the tracks does not by itself establish who was responsible or whether a compensation exception applies. UK Department for Transport guidance also describes 25% compensation for delays of 60–119 minutes and 50% for 120 minutes or more; check the relevant scheme and conditions at the government guidance.

Claim a refund or delay compensation
For compensation after travel, use the train company’s claim page or form. For a disruption-related refund on an unused ticket, contact the retailer that sold it. Submit promptly: deadlines, thresholds, and evidence requirements vary by operator and ticket.

Make a complaint if the problem is unresolved
Gather the departure station, date, time, ticket type, and relevant journey details, then contact the train company. The Office of Rail and Road says a full response should usually arrive within 20 working days. If the issue remains unresolved, the Rail Ombudsman may review eligible complaints; its decision is binding on the train service provider. See ORR guidance on passenger complaints.

What affects your rights and next steps?
- Location: Great Britain and EU passenger rights differ and are not interchangeable.
- Your ticket and journey: Ticket type, operator, arrival delay, whether you travelled, and— for some Great Britain refunds—purchase date can affect the route to a claim.
- The disruption and its circumstances: Compensation exceptions may apply in some cases; the phrase “incident on the tracks” alone does not determine the legal outcome.
- Any onward travel or extra costs: Confirm whether your ticket remains valid and whether replacement transport or accommodation is authorized before paying yourself.
