If a STEM toy is upsetting your child, pause and respond to the frustration before deciding whether to keep going. Ask what feels tricky, offer a break if needed, and—if your child wants to continue—help with one small next step rather than taking over. If the activity keeps causing distress, it is reasonable to put it aside and try something that better fits your child’s current abilities and interests.
Start with the feeling, not the toy
Try a calm, specific observation: “You look frustrated. What part feels tricky?” Frustration is a feeling to understand, not misbehavior to punish, and it does not by itself show that a child lacks ability or interest. Young children may communicate needs through behavior before they can explain them clearly. Childcare.gov’s guidance on understanding challenging behaviors explains why noticing what may be behind the behavior can help caregivers respond.
Listen to the answer, watch what part of the activity is causing difficulty, and avoid assuming the child simply needs to try harder. The obstacle might be an instruction, a small piece, a sequence of steps, or a mismatch between the task and the child’s current skills.
Choose the next move based on how your child is doing

Sesame Workshop’s guidance on frustration and persistence recommends calming strategies, breaks, planning together, and breaking a task into smaller steps. It puts the balance plainly: “Learning something new takes patience and practice.” Persistence does not require pushing through distress in the moment.

If your child wants to continue, make the challenge smaller
Keep the child involved while reducing the immediate load. Try one approach at a time:
- Look together at just the next instruction instead of the whole build.
- Sort the pieces needed for the next step.
- Demonstrate one move, then let your child try it.
- Offer two possible next steps and let your child choose.
- Notice a specific effort or bit of progress, such as finding the right piece or completing one connection.

Check whether the toy fits the task your child is facing
An age label is useful context, but it cannot show whether every child will find a particular activity manageable. Think about the actual demands of the toy:
- Instructions: Do they require reading, interpreting diagrams, or following unfamiliar language?
- Pieces: Are the pieces small or difficult to handle?
- Steps: Is the build long or dependent on remembering several instructions at once?
- Skills: Does the activity rely on fine-motor, language, or problem-solving abilities your child is still developing?
- Interest: Does your child want to do this kind of activity, or is the challenge no longer engaging?
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s age-determination guidelines discuss cognitive readiness for learning toys. The CDC’s tips for understanding and enjoying the early years, dated April 30, 2026, advise adjusting expectations to a child’s development and abilities. These points can help you think through fit; they are not a formal test of a child’s development.

When to switch activities or get tailored guidance
If repeated attempts upset your child, put the toy away and offer another activity—or simply return to it another day. You do not need to buy a new toy to respond supportively. A simpler, open-ended activity can still let your child make choices and explore how things work.
Caregiver participation can support play without removing the child’s chance to explore. The American Academy of Pediatrics’ guidance on selecting toys for young children, published in January 2019, discusses caregiver-supported play and advises caregivers of children with special needs to consider individualized guidance from specialty therapists when selecting toys and activities. If you are considering a different STEM kit, check its manufacturer’s age guidance and the actual demands of the activity; no particular kit is guaranteed to prevent frustration.
