A satellite wildfire alert means a sensor detected a thermal anomaly—not that an uncontrolled wildfire has been confirmed at the map marker. If you see smoke or flames, face immediate danger, or receive an evacuation notice, follow local emergency instructions. If the map alert is your only signal, check when and where the satellite observed it, then compare it with current local fire and emergency-management updates.
What should you do when a satellite wildfire alert may be wrong?
- Check for immediate danger. If you see fire or smoke nearby, or officials have issued an alert or evacuation instruction, act on that information and follow local guidance. NASA warns that satellite-derived active-fire and thermal-anomaly data have limited accuracy and says not to use FIRMS for the preservation of life or property (NASA LANCE FIRMS Fire Map). The CDC likewise advises: “Always follow instructions given by local emergency management officials” (CDC wildfire safety guidance).
- Read the alert details. Note the observation time, sensor or data source, mapped location and any confidence field. FIRMS acquisition times are in UTC, so convert the time to your local time zone before comparing it with local reports (NASA FIRMS Fire Alert Notes).
- Check current local information. Look at the relevant fire agency or emergency-management service for incident updates and evacuation instructions. A satellite map is observational data, not an official incident confirmation or dispatch service.
- Do not travel to the marker to investigate. The mapped location represents a sensor footprint, not a precise, verified point on the ground. Going there could expose you to danger without resolving whether a fire is present.
- If the alert still appears mistaken, contact the appropriate local authority through its published channel. Use the timestamp and map location to describe what you saw. Reporting procedures vary by jurisdiction; there is no single global reporting route established by the sources cited here.
Is a satellite fire alert a confirmed fire?
No. A hotspot is a satellite detection of a thermal anomaly, not proof of an uncontrolled vegetation fire. NASA notes that detected anomalies can be associated with fire, hot smoke, agriculture or other heat sources (NASA LANCE FIRMS Fire Map). Local context and current information from the responsible fire or emergency-management agency are needed to assess what is happening.
Does a hotspot mean the whole mapped area is burning?
No. The marker represents an approximate sensor footprint, not a statement that every part of the displayed area is on fire. NASA gives approximate pixel footprints of 1 km × 1 km for MODIS and 375 m × 375 m for VIIRS. A detection may therefore appear near a building, field or industrial site without identifying the exact heat source on the ground (NASA LANCE FIRMS Fire Map).
How should you interpret a confidence score?
A confidence label is not ground verification or a universal probability that a wildfire exists. NASA describes the MODIS confidence field, which ranges from 0 to 100, as experimental and cautions that its meaning may differ across regions (NASA FIRMS Fire Alert Notes). Treat it as sensor-specific context, not as a substitute for official confirmation.

Can a satellite miss a wildfire?
Yes. A blank map does not establish that an area is safe. A fire may not be detected because a satellite is between observations, or because clouds, smoke or tree canopy obscure the signal. MODIS can also miss fires that are too small or cool for its footprint (NASA FIRMS Fire Alert Notes). If you see signs of danger or receive an official warning, follow local instructions regardless of what the map shows.
How current is a FIRMS alert?
NASA says global FIRMS near-real-time data are generally available within three hours of observation, while detections in the United States and Canada are available in real time. These are service-level availability descriptions, not a guarantee that a specific detection will appear within a fixed response time; availability can change (NASA LANCE FIRMS service overview). Always compare the acquisition time with current local updates rather than assuming a marker describes conditions now.
