If an election official says you cannot vote, ask them to check your registration record, explain the specific problem, and confirm you are at the correct polling place. In a U.S. federal election, if you say you are registered but are missing from the eligible-voter list—or an official says you are ineligible—ask for a provisional ballot. It is reviewed later, and it is not a guarantee your vote will count. Procedures differ by country, state, territory, locality, and election.

What to do at the polling place

  1. Ask what the problem is. Request that the poll worker or election office check your registration record and identify the specific reason they believe you are ineligible. Ask whether the issue is your eligibility, registration status, identification, polling location, or a mismatch in your name or address.
  2. Confirm you are at the right place. Check that the polling place serves your current address and election. If you may be at the wrong location, ask an election official where you should go and whether another option is available under local rules.
  3. Ask for a provisional ballot if you are voting in a U.S. federal election and the listed circumstances apply. The U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) says: “If a voter arrives at a voting location to vote in a federal election and says they are registered to vote but do not appear on the list of eligible voters, or a poll worker asserts they are not eligible, they must be offered a provisional ballot.” The EAC’s overview describes exceptions to the general requirement; the local election office can explain how the rule applies to your situation. This safeguard is not a universal rule for elections outside the covered U.S. federal context. Read the EAC overview of federal election laws and provisional ballots.
  4. Ask exactly how to complete the ballot and what follow-up is required. A name or address discrepancy, or an identification requirement, may affect the steps you must take. Do not leave without asking about the applicable deadline and how to check whether your ballot was counted.
  5. Keep any receipt or tracking information. Use the status-check instructions from your election office. Under the EAC’s description of federal law, voters must have free access to learn whether a provisional ballot counted and, if it did not, why; the available method is administered locally.

How a U.S. provisional ballot is reviewed

A provisional ballot records your vote while election officials check whether you were eligible under state law and whether another ballot from you has already been counted. The ballot is handled separately until those checks are complete. A provisional ballot is therefore a chance to have your eligibility reviewed, not a promise that the vote will count. State rules determine what evidence or additional steps are required and whether your ballot qualifies.

Some states require voters to provide acceptable identification after Election Day, potentially “within a few days,” according to USAGov’s voter ID guidance. That is not a nationwide deadline. Contact your state or local election office immediately to learn the precise deadline, accepted documents, and status-check method for your ballot.

Who to contact when the rules are unclear

Election rules are administered locally, and the right answer depends on the election and jurisdiction. The EAC provides guidance and best practices but says it does not regulate elections; state and local officials administer the rules. Contact the relevant state, local, or territorial election office for the procedure that controls your case. The EAC’s voter FAQs explain its role.

If you believe you were targeted through intimidation, discrimination, or deliberate voter suppression in the United States, report the concern to your state, local, or territorial election office. USAGov also lists the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division Voting Section, at 1-800-253-3931, and an online reporting route. Check USAGov’s current reporting channels before contacting an office, since contact details and services can change. Reporting a suspected violation is separate from securing a ballot or confirming your eligibility.

If you are voting in the United Kingdom

UK voting eligibility varies by election and depends on factors including age, nationality, residence, and registration. If an official says you are not eligible, contact your electoral registration office to check your record and ask what rule applies to the election. GOV.UK provides a postcode-based route to contact your electoral registration office; Northern Ireland has a separate service and contact route.

If you have changed your name, address, or nationality, you generally need to register again. Use GOV.UK’s voter-registration service to check the relevant process. The correct remedy depends on the election and your circumstances, so ask the registration office directly.

What cannot be answered without your location

There is no single worldwide process for challenging an eligibility decision. The available ballot, correction or appeal procedure, any deadline, and how to check the result depend on the country, election, and local rules. The cited U.S. federal safeguard does not establish a right to a provisional ballot in every election or jurisdiction. For an individual case, the responsible election office is the source for the applicable steps and deadlines.
