If your Samsung phone’s IMEI is missing, first check whether it is absent only from one screen: look in Settings, try *#06# where supported, and compare the result with the phone’s box or purchase and carrier records. If records show an IMEI but the phone itself does not, contact Samsung support or an authorized service center for diagnosis. If the IMEI is present but the SIM or mobile network is not working, troubleshoot that separately with your carrier.
First, confirm whether the IMEI is actually missing
An IMEI identifies the phone; it is not the SIM card number. Samsung lists several ways to find it, and the available menu names can vary by model, carrier, and software version.
- Check Settings: Open Settings > About phone. On some older devices, look under a Status submenu.
- Try the Phone app code: Enter
*#06#. Samsung says this method works where supported by the carrier. - Compare external records: Check the original box, Samsung Members if the device was registered, carrier account, and receipt or bill of sale. Samsung says an IMEI is 15 digits; compare the full number rather than relying on a partial display.
Samsung’s instructions for locating an IMEI are available in its Galaxy IMEI, model number, and serial number guide. Packaging and carrier or purchase records can help establish the number associated with the device even when its current screen does not show one.
What to do if the phone itself shows no IMEI
If the IMEI appears in a reliable external record but is missing from both Settings and the dial-code result, treat it as a device-service issue. Contact Samsung support or an authorized repair center and ask them to diagnose the phone. Samsung’s consumer guidance explains how to locate an IMEI and request service, but does not provide a consumer procedure for rewriting or restoring one.

Do not assume a factory reset, network-settings reset, SIM replacement, or third-party IMEI-writing tool will restore a missing device identifier. Samsung’s basic SIM troubleshooting is for SIM detection and network problems, not for an IMEI absent from the phone. Samsung’s US repair portal says repair cost depends on diagnosis, warranty status, and repair type; service availability can also depend on the country where the product was purchased.
If the IMEI is present but the SIM or network is not recognized
A visible IMEI and a SIM-not-detected error point to different checks. Samsung notes that sudden loss of calls or mobile network connections can happen when a Galaxy device does not properly recognize its SIM. In the US, Samsung’s guide suggests checking Settings > About phone > Status information > SIM card status and seeing whether the carrier name appears under Network.

Try Samsung’s SIM checks
- Check whether a carrier SIM-protection feature is blocking activation.
- Restart the phone, then reseat the SIM. Do not force the SIM or tray.
- If possible, test another active SIM to help distinguish a SIM problem from a phone or account issue.
- Reset mobile network settings if appropriate for your device and carrier.
- If the SIM contacts look dirty, gently wipe them with a soft, dry cloth.
- Run SIM diagnostics in Samsung Members if available on your phone.
These steps address SIM detection or mobile connectivity; Samsung does not say they restore a missing IMEI. If the carrier name is absent, activation fails, or the carrier says it cannot recognize the phone, contact the carrier about SIM activation, account restrictions, or device recognition. Clarify what “not recognized” means. A missing number on the handset is different from a carrier failing to accept a number that is visible, and both differ from a blacklist result. Carrier recognition, blacklist status, and remedies vary by country and provider; a report from one checker is not a universal diagnosis.

If you bought the phone used, contact the seller and your carrier to ask what status they see and what options apply locally. Samsung Canada advises contacting the carrier or seller about blacklist status and considering a return or exchange if needed; that guidance is specific to Canada, not a universal process. In India, the government’s CEIR IMEI verification service provides a country-specific check and advises against buying a phone whose status is black-listed, duplicate, or already in use. Follow the local carrier or official process for your country rather than assuming those regional remedies apply elsewhere.
