If a password or personal detail appears on a leak site, treat it as a warning to secure the affected account and check what information was exposed—not as proof that someone has already used it. Start by verifying the incident through the organization’s official website or app, then change exposed and reused passwords. If the listing includes a Social Security number or other identity data, follow the U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s breach guidance at What To Do After a Data Breach.

1. Verify what was exposed without visiting the leak

Go to the affected organization using a bookmarked address or by typing its known official URL. Read its incident notice or contact support through its official app or website. Confirm which account and types of information the organization says were involved.

Do not enter a password or other credentials on a leak-site page, and do not follow an unexpected message offering to “recover” your information. A listing alone does not establish that the information is accurate, current, or that anyone accessed an account. There is no universally conclusive lookup method established for every leak-site listing; rely on the affected organization’s official communications for incident-specific details. The FTC’s Data Breach Resources page links to consumer guidance.

2. Secure passwords and account access

  1. Change the exposed password on the affected service, using its official website or app—not a link in an unexpected email or text.
  2. Change reused or similar passwords on other services. Prioritize your email account, especially the address used for password resets. The FBI advises using random password sequences and enabling MFA where possible in its Identity Theft Resources.
  3. Turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA) wherever the service offers it. MFA adds another check beyond a password; CISA’s archived More than a Password page describes the added protection. Use an option supported by the account and consider how you would regain access if you lost the device or factor.
  4. If the account may already have been accessed, sign out other active devices or sessions, review recent activity, and check that recovery email addresses and phone numbers belong to you. The FTC’s account-recovery guide explains these steps for hacked email and social media accounts.

3. Match your next steps to the exposed information

Password or login credential

Change it on the affected account and anywhere it was reused or closely resembles another password. Enable MFA and inspect sessions and recovery details if you suspect someone got into the account.

Email account

Secure the mailbox early because it may receive password-reset messages for other services. Once you regain control, check recovery details and sign out other devices or sessions. Use the FTC’s recovery steps if you cannot access the account or suspect it was taken over.

Social media account

Change the password, review account activity and recovery details, and sign out other sessions if access may have been compromised. If the account may have sent messages in your name, let affected contacts know to be cautious. The FTC covers this in its hacked-account guidance.

Social Security number or other identity data

In the United States, follow the breach-specific steps at IdentityTheft.gov. The FTC recommends ordering free credit reports and looking for accounts you do not recognize when your SSN was exposed. Consider a credit freeze or fraud alert; if you find actual misuse, report it and follow the recovery plan. The FTC’s breach guidance explains these options.

Payment card or bank details

If you see suspicious activity, contact the card issuer or financial institution using the number on the card or its official app or website. Follow that institution’s instructions for the specific account or payment method; the right response can vary by institution and instrument.

4. Watch for breach-themed phishing

Scammers may use a real breach to make an impostor call, text, or email sound credible. Reach the organization independently through its official website or app rather than using a message link. Do not give an unsolicited contact your password, banking credentials, or one-time verification code. The FBI says official FBI correspondence will never request passwords or banking credentials; its identity-theft resource also recommends strong random passwords and MFA.

5. Use official support and any offered protection

If the affected organization offers free breach-related services, such as credit monitoring or identity-theft insurance, the FTC advises taking advantage of them. Confirm eligibility and enrollment instructions through the organization’s independently reached official channel, and check the notice for the service’s scope, duration, and deadline. These terms depend on the incident; do not assume a paid monitoring service is necessary or that monitoring prevents identity theft.

6. Do not rely on deleting the listing

You may not be able to remove a copy from every third-party leak site. The FTC’s business breach-response guide discusses organizations removing improperly posted information from their own websites and notes that search engines can retain cached material for a time. It does not establish a universal consumer takedown route for third-party leak sites. If information is exposed on a specific legitimate service, use that service’s official reporting channel. Keep your priority on securing accounts and limiting possible identity misuse.
