If you shared an image that is false, misleading, or missing important context, correct the original post quickly and make the correction visible to the people who saw it. Avoid sharing the image again, and report it through the platform’s relevant process if it may violate that service’s rules. Nonconsensual intimate images require a separate, urgent removal process.
What to do first after sharing a fake image
- Stop spreading it. Don’t forward or quote-post the image just to tell people it is fake. That can give it more reach. If you need to explain the problem, avoid embedding the image again and link to reliable context instead.
- Correct or remove your original post. If the service lets you edit the caption, make the correction there; delete the post if that is the more appropriate option. Then publish a clear correction on the same account or thread so the original audience has a chance to see it. State what was wrong and give the accurate context. A correction posted somewhere else may not reach the people who saw the original.
- Report the content if a platform rule may apply. Use the post’s report feature or the service’s support process, choosing the closest accurate category and explaining the context. Rules differ across services, and a report does not guarantee removal.

False claim or misleading caption
Focus on correcting the claim and context. Edit or delete your post as appropriate, and consider reporting the image if the way it is presented violates the platform’s rules. There is no general removal guarantee for ordinary misinformation.
Deceptively manipulated media
Check the specific service’s current policy: platforms draw their own lines between harmless edits, disclosed material, and manipulations that may deceive or cause harm. For example, Google Search’s user-generated-content guidance says it does not allow audio, video, or image content manipulated to deceive, defraud, or mislead by representing actions or events that did not take place. X’s authenticity policy covers some synthetic, manipulated, or out-of-context media that could cause serious harm or widespread confusion on public issues. These are platform-specific examples, not universal rules. See Google Search’s Community Guidelines for user-generated content and X’s authenticity policy.
Nonconsensual intimate image
If the image is an intimate photo or video shared without consent, do not repost it to demonstrate the problem. Use the service’s dedicated intimate-image reporting or removal process. The U.S. Take It Down Act covers qualifying real and digitally forged intimate imagery. According to the FTC, covered platforms must remove qualifying content and known identical copies within 48 hours after receiving a valid request. If a platform does not remove it within that period, FTC guidance points users to TakeItDown.ftc.gov. This is a U.S.-specific process for qualifying material and covered platforms, not a 48-hour takedown promise for other fake images or every service. Read the FTC’s Take It Down Act guidance for details.

Protect your privacy and safety
- Before uploading personal images to a removal or reporting service, check its privacy, data-sharing, and retention practices.
- If someone is threatening you, demanding money, or targeting a minor, seek appropriate local specialist or law-enforcement support. Deleting one post cannot guarantee that screenshots or copies elsewhere will disappear.
- The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center warns that manipulated photos and videos can be used in exploitation and sextortion schemes. Its guidance advises care when sharing personal content online: FBI IC3 public service announcement.
What a correction can—and cannot—do
A visible correction helps address your own post and gives its audience accurate context, but it cannot ensure that everyone who saw the image will see the correction. Platform reporting may prompt review under that service’s rules; it does not ensure deletion. No single correction or removal request can guarantee that every copy, repost, or screenshot will be erased. For intimate imagery, use the dedicated process and check the applicable eligibility and platform requirements.
