Start with the exact VAN: code in the Vanguard warning, then follow the Riot Support instructions for that code. The warning may mean Windows or firmware is not reporting a required security feature correctly; it does not, by itself, mean Riot has accused you of cheating. A recent upgrade can be relevant, especially a motherboard change or firmware update, but it is not proof that the upgrade caused the restriction.

1. Record the exact warning before changing settings

  1. Copy or photograph the full message and code. A VAN:Restriction warning is not interchangeable with a VAN 9005 error; their troubleshooting instructions differ.
  2. Open VGTray if you need the linked instructions. Riot says Vanguard may identify one or more security requirements based on your system configuration, so do not change every security setting unless the code-specific guide calls for it. See Riot’s VAN:Restriction troubleshooting guide.
  3. Open the Riot Support article matching your exact code. The VAN: RESTRICTION: 5 guide specifically directs players with other codes to the corresponding article.

Riot says a restriction means the current system configuration is too similar to configurations that bypass Vanguard security features; it does not necessarily mean Riot suspects you of cheating. The restriction blocks launch until Vanguard can verify the requirements specified for your case. Riot’s December 18, 2025 Vanguard security update explains the distinction.

2. Check the Windows security features named by your code

For the Windows-reported status of several common requirements, open Windows Security > Device security. Check the sections for the security processor, Secure Boot, and Core isolation. The precise checks depend on the restriction code; use the matching Riot guide as the selector.

TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot

If Riot’s instructions call for TPM 2.0 or Secure Boot, check their status in Device security and follow the Riot article for the displayed code. TPM is a hardware security feature; Secure Boot helps prevent unauthorized software from loading during startup. Riot’s restriction troubleshooting guide describes the relevant checks.

Secure Boot is controlled through your PC’s UEFI firmware. Microsoft notes that enabling it may require switching the boot mode from Legacy or CSM to UEFI. Because firmware menus and safe procedures vary by model, consult your PC or motherboard manufacturer’s instructions before changing boot settings. See Microsoft’s Secure Boot guidance.

Memory Integrity, HVCI, and virtualization

If the code-specific Riot guide names Memory Integrity, look under Windows Security > Device security > Core isolation. Memory Integrity, also called HVCI, uses virtualization-based security. Microsoft says hardware virtualization must be enabled in UEFI or BIOS for Memory Integrity, and an incompatible driver may prevent it from turning on. Check Microsoft’s Device security guidance and address any driver warning it reports rather than forcing an unrelated firmware change.

IOMMU and pre-boot DMA protection

If Riot’s message or guide identifies IOMMU or pre-boot DMA protection, a motherboard firmware issue is one possible cause. Riot reported cases where firmware signaled that pre-boot DMA protection was active even though IOMMU had not initialized correctly during early boot; Riot said hardware partners produced BIOS updates addressing the issue. This describes a documented firmware pathway, not evidence that every hardware upgrade causes a Vanguard restriction. The explanation appears in Riot’s December 18, 2025 security update.

3. If firmware changes are needed, use model-specific instructions

Do not follow a generic BIOS recipe or install a firmware utility from an unofficial source. Check the support page for the exact PC or motherboard model, and use its instructions for any firmware update or setting change. Riot directs affected players to official manufacturer firmware guidance; Microsoft also advises users who are unsure about Secure Boot settings to consult their PC manufacturer.

4. Restart, retry, and escalate with the code and logs

  1. After making the code-specific Windows or firmware changes, restart Windows.
  2. Launch VALORANT again and check whether Vanguard clears the warning.
  3. If the warning persists despite meeting the listed requirements, submit a ticket to Riot Player Support and include the full error text and logs. Riot’s VAN 9005 instructions call for checking TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, and Memory Integrity in sequence and submitting logs if that error remains; restriction codes have their own support guidance.

A new motherboard or firmware update may be relevant to a security-status problem, but the warning alone does not establish causation. Riot’s documented firmware issue is one possible explanation, not a universal diagnosis. The practical next step is always the exact code’s requirement—not buying a motherboard or TPM, or applying a generic BIOS fix.
