Take the case off and test the affected function again. If the button works, the camera or flash behaves normally, or charging starts, the case or an attached accessory is likely causing the problem. Replace it with one made for your exact iPhone model. If the issue continues with the case removed, troubleshoot the iPhone or charger instead.
First, isolate the case
- Remove the case and attached accessories. Take off any wallet, magnetic mount, metal plate, or other item attached to the phone.
- Repeat the same test. Try the affected button or switch; take a photo and test the flash; or place the phone on its charger and check for a charging indication.
- Compare the results. If the function returns, stop using that case or accessory. If it does not, follow the relevant troubleshooting steps below.
If a button or switch is blocked
A case can press against a control, cover it, or make it difficult to press. Apple’s first recommendation when an iPhone button or switch is not working is to remove any protective film or case that might block it. Check around the control for debris, too. If the control works with the case off, choose a replacement designed for your exact iPhone model, with openings or covers that let you use its buttons and switches. If it remains stuck, damaged, or intermittent without the case, contact Apple Support or arrange service.
If the case obstructs the camera or flash
With the case off, take a photo and test the flash. Apple recommends removing cases, films, and accessories that may obstruct the camera or flash, or place a magnet near the camera. If a photo is blurry, gently clean the lens with a microfiber cloth. Apple also recommends restarting the iPhone and updating iOS as further troubleshooting; persistent camera or flash problems may need service. See Apple’s camera and flash guidance.

Check magnets and metal near the rear cameras
A strong magnetic field near camera sensors can interfere with optical image stabilisation (OIS) and closed-loop autofocus. If your case has a magnetic mount or a metal plate near the rear cameras, leave it off while testing. Apple advises keeping magnetic accessories and magnetisable metal away from the cameras for best performance. See Apple’s guidance on magnetic interference with cameras.
If wireless charging does not start
- Remove the case and anything attached to the phone’s back. In particular, take off an attached wallet.
- Check what is between the phone and charger. Cards, badges, passports, and key fobs should not sit between them.
- Center the phone on the charger. MagSafe charging depends on correct alignment. Look for the charging indication to confirm that charging has started.
- Check compatibility. Confirm that your iPhone model, case, and charging setup are compatible before deciding the case is defective.
Apple says supported iPhones can charge in a MagSafe case or sleeve. See Apple’s instructions for using a MagSafe Charger. If charging still does not start with the case removed and the phone correctly placed, investigate the charger or iPhone rather than assuming the case is the cause.

What to look for in a replacement case
- Exact model fit: Check that the case is listed for your particular iPhone model, not just a similar-looking model.
- Usable controls: Make sure buttons, switches, and any Camera Control on your model are accessible and work comfortably through the case.
- Clear camera and flash openings: The case should not overlap the lenses or flash.
- Charging compatibility: Confirm compatibility with your MagSafe or Qi charging arrangement.
- Camera clearance for mounts: If you use a magnetic mount, avoid setups that place magnets or metal near the rear cameras.
There is no single replacement that can be recommended without knowing your iPhone model and charging setup. Use those details to check the case maker’s compatibility information before buying.
