Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf a macOS upgrade appears stuck, give it time before forcing a restart: Apple says the progress bar can move slowly or pause for a long time. If the Mac still will not finish or start, follow the branch that matches what you see: resolve installer errors, enter macOS Recovery using the steps for your Mac, repair the startup disk, and try reinstalling before considering an erase. Back up first if possible; erasing removes the Mac’s contents.
First, identify what the Mac is doing
Note the exact screen or message before changing anything. An installer error, an Apple logo with a progress bar, a blank screen, a flashing question-mark folder, a Recovery Assistant prompt, and a Mac that appears not to turn on are different situations. The steps below start with the least destructive options.
- Apple logo or progress bar: the upgrade or startup may still be working, even if the bar seems paused.
- Installer error: use the message to identify issues such as insufficient storage, then check the installation conditions.
- Flashing question-mark folder: the Mac cannot find an available startup disk with a working macOS.
- Blank screen or no apparent power: use Apple’s symptom-specific guidance rather than assuming the upgrade damaged the disk. See Apple’s blank-screen steps or its general startup guidance.
- Recovery Assistant: on macOS Tahoe 26 or later, it can open automatically after certain startup failures and attempt recovery. If it cannot fix the issue, continue with disk repair or reinstall steps as appropriate. Apple explains Recovery Assistant.
If you need Recovery, determine whether your Mac has Apple silicon or an Intel processor. The startup procedure is different.
If the progress bar seems stuck
A long pause alone does not prove that installation has failed. Apple notes that an Apple logo or progress bar can remain much longer than usual during an upgrade, move slowly, or pause for extended periods. Avoid interrupting the Mac just because the bar has stopped briefly. Apple’s progress-bar guidance covers this symptom.

If the Mac remains stuck and you decide it needs a restart:
- Hold the power button for up to 10 seconds, until the Mac shuts down.
- Press the power button again to start it.
- If the problem persists, shut it down once more and disconnect nonessential accessories, including hubs, external drives, and printers, before trying again.
If the Mac repeatedly stalls at the Apple logo or progress bar, it may need service rather than repeated forced restarts.

If the installer reports an error
Read the full error message and address the issue it names. If it reports insufficient storage, free space before retrying. A stable internet connection is also important: the installer may download macOS, firmware, and other information needed for your Mac model.
- Try installing from macOS Recovery, which Apple recommends to reduce interference from other software.
- If you are installing through Software Update or the App Store, Safe Mode may help isolate software that interferes with installation.
- If the error appears related to downloading or connecting, check the network and try again. Recovery has specific network requirements described below.
Apple’s full checklist is in If an error occurred while updating or installing macOS.

Enter macOS Recovery using the right startup method
Apple silicon
- Shut down the Mac.
- Press and hold the power button until the startup options appear.
- Select Options, then select Continue.
Intel
- Turn on the Mac and immediately hold Command-R until the Apple logo or another startup screen appears.
- If local Recovery does not start, use the Internet Recovery key combination appropriate to the version of macOS you need; Apple documents the available combinations.
On Intel Macs, a built-in keyboard or a wired keyboard can help ensure the startup keys register. For the exact steps and Internet Recovery combinations, see Apple’s macOS Recovery instructions.
Repair the startup disk before reinstalling
In Recovery, open Disk Utility and run First Aid on the startup disk. If First Aid repairs the disk or finds no errors, restart and check whether macOS starts. For a flashing question-mark folder, if the folder returns after this check, go back to Recovery and reinstall macOS. Apple’s question-mark guidance explains the symptom and repair sequence.

If the startup disk does not appear in Disk Utility, or Disk Utility cannot repair it, the problem may need further service. Do not treat a missing disk as a reason to erase blindly.
Reinstall macOS without erasing first
Back up the Mac if you can before reinstalling. Apple states, “Reinstalling macOS doesn’t remove your apps or personal data,” but still recommends backing up first when possible. An external drive is one possible backup destination; choose one that suits your capacity and compatibility needs.

- If the installer asks you to choose between Macintosh HD and Macintosh HD – Data, select Macintosh HD.
The version offered depends on your Mac and the Recovery route. On Apple silicon, Recovery installs the current version of the most recently installed macOS, subject to Apple’s stated exception when the disk was erased after an upgrade. On Intel, Command-R offers the current version of the most recently installed macOS; Option-Command-R may offer the latest compatible version; and Shift-Option-Command-R may offer the version that came with the Mac, or the closest version still available. See Apple’s reinstall instructions.
Recovery installation requires broadband using DHCP over Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Captive-network sign-ins, 802.1X security, and PPPoE without a router handling PPPoE can prevent it from working. If Internet Recovery shows a warning or cannot connect, try Ethernet or another network. Apple’s Recovery guidance describes these connection issues.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Erase only as a last resort
Erasing is not the same as reinstalling: it resets the Mac and removes its contents. Apple lists erasing as a possible later step when other installation measures fail, but first consider whether a backup exists and whether Apple Support or service is the safer next move. If Disk Utility cannot erase the disk or cannot see it, service may be required. Apple’s relevant guidance is for installation errors, for a question-mark folder, and for reinstalling macOS.
When to contact Apple Support or seek service
Get help if Recovery cannot see or repair the startup disk, reinstalling fails, or the Mac continues to stall at startup. Persistent installation failures on Apple silicon Macs or Macs with the T2 Security Chip can rarely require firmware revive or restore. Those procedures are model-specific; use Apple’s guidance or contact Apple Support rather than trying generic firmware instructions. Apple also identifies service as a possible next step for persistent startup stalls and blank-screen problems. See Apple’s installation-error guidance, its progress-bar guidance, and its blank-screen guidance.
