Stay outside the closure and away from the cliff edge. Check the responsible land manager’s current alerts and signs, then use only a marked diversion or an alternative viewpoint that the authority confirms is open. Do not cross barriers, follow an unofficial path, or detour along the shore beneath an unstable bluff.

What to do at the closure

  1. Stop at the sign or barrier. Do not pass it to reach a viewpoint, beach, photo spot, or shortcut. Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park says visitors must stay out of closed areas and away from unstable cliff edges, which can collapse without warning. NPS guidance for Hōlei Sea Arch describes the closure of the original viewing area after cracks and instability were found, followed by a safer viewing area farther from the edge.
  2. Read the closure notice. Check which section is closed and whether the notice identifies a bypass. Follow its route markers or map; if no authorized route is clear, turn back and ask the park, council, or coastal authority for current directions.
  3. Check that the alternative is open. Do not assume a nearby lookout is safe or accessible just because the closed section is signed. Use an alternative only when the authority identifies it as open.
  4. Stay away from both the top and base of the cliff. A beach-level detour beneath an unstable bluff is not a safe workaround: rocks can fall from above, and rough, wave-swept shorelines can create additional hazards.

How to choose an authorized alternative

When an authority lists more than one option, compare whether it is officially open, how long and difficult the route is, its accessibility, its exposure to cliffs or surf, and whether the destination itself is confirmed open. Local notices may direct visitors to an inland diversion, a linking trail, or a replacement viewpoint; those examples are site-specific, not routes to copy elsewhere.

  • Marked diversion: Use the route specified by the land manager, rather than a path that merely looks passable.
  • Designated viewpoint: Choose it only when the authority confirms it is open. At Hōlei Sea Arch, NPS designated a safer viewing area set farther from the edge.
  • No clear option: Turn back and contact the responsible authority instead of improvising a route.

For example, the Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority says visitors should use inland and linking trails when unsafe sections between Jan Juc and Torquay are closed. The Wales Coast Path closures and diversions page gives location-specific instructions for routes around cordoned cliff hazards or along replacement lines after collapse. These directions apply to their named locations, not to other coastlines.

Why barriers and informal paths matter

A closure marks an area people are required to avoid; it is not a suggestion based on whether the path appears stable. NSW National Parks advises visitors to stay on marked tracks, obey barriers, and use designated lookouts. Point Reyes National Seashore warns that going beyond fences and using informal “social paths” can worsen erosion and create hazards for visitors and rescuers.

Do not infer that a closure ends at a fence, that a visible footpath is official, or that a route is safe because other visitors are using it. Cliff conditions can change, and a route open at one time may later be affected by erosion, storms, or other hazards.

Check conditions before and during your visit

Before setting out, check the responsible land manager’s alerts and route information for the exact destination. At the site, follow the current signs and staff instructions. NSW National Parks recommends checking park alerts and forecasts because conditions can change rapidly; the Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority describes monitoring cliffs and trails as hazards develop.
