Act before the deadline in the publisher’s shutdown notice: record the exact closure time and any earlier export cutoff, capture the progress you can still see, copy accessible local files to storage outside the service, submit any official migration or data request, and keep the relevant accounts active until everything is saved. A screenshot or backup cannot recreate a character, inventory, currency, ranking, or entitlement that exists only on the publisher’s servers. Whether the game remains playable offline, becomes partly functional, or stops launching entirely is a title-specific decision documented by the publisher and platform.
What should I save before an online game shuts down?
Save five different kinds of information separately: the shutdown rules, visible memories, accessible files, server-held account data, and proof of ownership. Treating them as one “backup” creates false confidence because each is stored and recoverable in a different way.
- Shutdown information: the closure date, exact time and time zone, last-login date, export or migration deadline, affected platforms and regions, and what the publisher says will continue afterward.
- Visible records: screenshots and video of your character, profile, inventory, unlocks, achievements, settings, customizations, memorable matches, and other progress you want to document.
- Accessible files: local save files, configuration files, replays, clips, screenshots, and other files that your device and game allow you to copy.
- Server-held state: characters, inventories, currencies, rankings, entitlements, and statistics that appear only after the game authenticates with the publisher.
- Account evidence: account names, player IDs, platform IDs, linked email addresses, region, order numbers, receipts, entitlements, and support case numbers.
Make a written inventory with the exact game title and edition, platform, region, account, and linked publisher profile. Mark every item as local, platform-synchronized, or publisher-server. That label determines whether copying a file, downloading cloud data, or requesting an export can actually preserve it.

Use the publisher’s current shutdown announcement, support page, or in-game notice as the authority. Community posts can omit a time zone or confuse the end of new purchases with the end of logins.

- Record the announced shutdown date and time, including the time zone.
- Write down the last moment the game accepts logins, if it differs from the server-closure time.
- Look for a separate deadline for exports, account migration, refunds, personal-data requests, or support tickets.
- Note the affected platforms, editions, regions, and modes.
- Read what remains available: offline play, local modes, downloaded media, or nothing at all.
- Save a local screenshot or PDF of the notice and any support replies, because pages may change after closure.
Shutdowns do not all have the same result. PlayStation’s shutdown listings give examples of both outcomes: GUNS UP! became unplayable because it required online access, while MLB The Show 19 and MLB The Show 20 retained offline play after their online services ended. Do not infer your game’s result from another title’s announcement.
Where is my progress stored?
Ask where the particular data lives, not merely whether your platform offers cloud saves. A platform cloud badge covers only the files that the game’s developer configured for synchronization, and a publisher account can hold important state that never appears in a downloadable save.

Steam explains that Steam Cloud can store data such as save games and profile statistics, but the developer decides which files a game uploads. If cloud functionality is disabled for a title, relevant progress remains only on the local computer where it was made. After your final session, wait for the platform’s synchronization to finish and check that the newest timestamp or status is present.
Can I save my character, inventory, and currency?
Only if the publisher provides an official export, migration, or offline solution that includes those items. Screenshots prove what was visible; they do not convert server-side state into a restore file.
Look for a named migration
Search the shutdown notice for words such as “migration,” “transfer,” “export,” “offline mode,” or a specified destination game. Follow the exact account-linking and submission steps, and complete them before the earliest stated cutoff. Save the confirmation number or email.

Ask support precise questions
While your account still authenticates, ask whether characters, inventory, paid content, currencies, achievements, statistics, and account identifiers will migrate; what file format is supplied; where the file can be used; whether the result is playable or merely a personal-data archive; and the final date for each request. Keep both your request and the reply.
A shutdown FAQ for a specific title from MY.GAMES, for example, described personal-data access or deletion requests through its support channels during that game’s server-shutdown period. That is a title-specific process, not a universal publisher guarantee. If no official route is documented, plan to preserve evidence and memories rather than expecting a restorable online character.
How do I download screenshots, clips, and replays?
Capture important material before the last reliable login, then move a copy outside the service that is closing. Platform capture tools differ by console and generation, so use the platform’s documented workflow rather than assuming a mobile app or web gallery will remain available.
Capture what will be hardest to reconstruct
- Your character or profile screen, including the player or account identifier.
- Inventory, unlocks, achievements, ranks, statistics, settings, and custom designs.
- Paid items, downloadable content, balances, and other entitlements shown in the account.
- Friends, guild, clan, or team information that you want to remember, subject to other players’ privacy.
- Important matches, replays, and clips that are currently temporary or stored only in an online gallery.
Use the console capture controls
On PlayStation 5, the Create menu provides the controls for taking a screenshot, saving recent gameplay, and starting a recording; PlayStation documents a separate capture workflow for PlayStation 4. After capturing, export or copy the media to a computer, phone, or external storage that you control. Check the resulting files by opening a sample image and playing a sample video.
Keep the original capture until the independent copy is verified. If a platform offers automatic deletion of older clips, copy the material before starting another long session that might overwrite it.

How do I copy local saves and other files safely?
Copy only files you can legitimately access through the game and device, and never make the external copy your sole remaining version. An external USB drive is useful for accessible files, but it cannot rescue data that never leaves the publisher’s servers.

- Identify the documented local save, replay, screenshot, or configuration location for your platform.
- Copy the files to an external USB drive or another independent destination with sufficient capacity.
- Create a clear folder name containing the game, platform, account, and copy date.
- Keep the original files untouched and make a second copy when the material is irreplaceable.
- Verify the copy by opening media and, where the game supports it, testing a duplicate save rather than the original.
Device policy, encryption, account binding, and platform restrictions can prevent a copied file from loading elsewhere. Do not edit or overwrite a save to “test” it until you have preserved an untouched source.
Should I keep my account active?
Yes. Leave the publisher and platform accounts intact until exports, migrations, support requests, and file checks are finished. Logging out is fine; deleting the account is not a preservation step.
Steam states that account deletion is permanent and removes game licenses, profile content, gifts, inventory, wallet funds, and associated information. It also removes profile screenshots, artwork, and persona history. Save anything you want first, and do not close an account while a support case or transfer is pending.
Store account identifiers, linked email addresses, platform IDs, region, order numbers, receipts, entitlements, and support case numbers in a secure password manager or encrypted document. This record can help resolve a migration question even when the game client later stops connecting.

What should I do during the final session?
Use a short, deliberate checklist instead of spending the final hours playing normally.
- Confirm the official deadline and your local conversion of the time zone.
- Sign in to every relevant platform and publisher account while authentication works.
- Capture the profile, player ID, character, inventory, unlocks, settings, achievements, and meaningful customizations.
- Save clips, replays, and screenshots, then export copies outside the platform gallery.
- Complete every announced migration or data request and save its receipt.
- Finish a normal save and wait for cloud synchronization to report completion.
- Copy accessible local files to independent storage and verify representative files.
- Do not delete accounts, uninstall the client, or remove local files until all checks are complete.
If the service closes while you are working, preserve what is already copied. Do not repeatedly retry a failing login if the publisher has announced that authentication ended; check the saved notice and support channel for the stated next step.
Will my save file still work after the servers close?
It may, but only if the game supports offline or local operation and the required files, licenses, and platform services remain available. A local save can still depend on account authentication, downloadable content, encryption keys, or a server check at launch.
After closure, test a duplicate copy only when the title explicitly supports offline loading. Check whether the client launches without a network connection, whether the desired mode appears, and whether owned content remains authorized. Never assume that a successful file copy means the entire game can be restored.

Preserve a durable record rather than searching for an unofficial “converter” that could expose your account or violate the game’s terms. Keep screenshots, video, receipts, identifiers, support correspondence, and any files the platform officially allows you to copy.

Document the date of your final successful login and the last synchronization status. If the game later receives an archival or offline update, your account and ownership records will make it easier to identify what should be available, but no private backup can force a publisher server to return data it never exported.
What are the most common preservation mistakes?
- Relying on a cloud icon: the developer may not synchronize the data you care about.
- Waiting for the announced shutdown hour: support, exports, and logins can end earlier.
- Capturing only the game screen: omit the account or player ID and your record becomes harder to identify.
- Copying one file and deleting the original: a corrupted or account-bound copy may be unusable.
- Assuming a data download is a playable save: ask the publisher what the file contains and where it works.
- Deleting the account to stop billing: permanent deletion can remove licenses, profile material, and evidence needed for support.
- Trusting another title’s shutdown behavior: offline availability is decided game by game.
How can I verify that my preservation work is complete?
Use three independent checks: visibility, file integrity, and account status. You should be able to see the saved screenshots and videos, open representative copied files, and show that every requested migration or export has a confirmation. Keep both the source and backup copies, labeled by title, platform, account, and date.
Once the deadline passes, check what still launches and what content remains accessible, but do not describe the game as restorable unless the publisher documents that outcome. The strongest result may be a permanent visual record and account archive rather than a playable replacement.

Can I use screenshots as proof when asking for a refund or support help?
They can document what was visible and help support identify the account or entitlement, especially when they include the player ID and date. They do not by themselves establish ownership under every platform’s policy, so retain receipts, order numbers, and the original support correspondence as well.
Should I record the game’s settings and control layout too?
Yes, if recreating your setup matters. Capture keybinds, accessibility options, display settings, sensitivity, and custom presets because these are often local or account-specific and may not appear in a platform cloud save.
Is a personal-data download the same as a backup of my game?
No. Privacy laws or a publisher’s support process may provide account records, transaction history, or identifiers without supplying an executable save. Ask what fields and file formats are included and whether another client can actually load them.
What should I do with old clips that contain other players’ voices or names?
Store them privately and consider trimming or blurring information you do not need before sharing. A shutdown does not remove privacy obligations or the preferences of people captured in your recordings.
