Start by checking what information the company says was exposed, then take the steps that match it. Verify the notice through the company’s official website or app, use the FTC’s tailored guide at IdentityTheft.gov/databreach, and watch for unfamiliar activity on affected accounts. A breach notice does not by itself mean someone has misused your information.
1. Read and verify the breach notice
Use the notice to establish what happened and what response makes sense. Record the company’s name, the date of the notice, the period affected, the information involved, whether the company knows of misuse, what it has done, and any protection offer or update channel.
If an unexpected email, text, or call claims to be about the breach, do not rely on its links or phone number. Go to the company’s known website or app yourself and use contact details published there. The FTC’s data breach response guide says a useful notice should explain what happened, what information was involved, steps the company has taken, what you can do, and how to get more information.
2. Take action based on what was exposed
Use the company’s instructions alongside the FTC’s incident-specific checklist at IdentityTheft.gov/databreach. Different kinds of information call for different responses.

Email address, password, login, or PIN
- Change the affected password, login, or PIN using the company’s official site or app.
- Change the password anywhere else you reused it. Choose a different password for each account.
- Use the official IdentityTheft.gov recovery steps as a checklist for exposed credentials.
Social Security number
- Review your credit reports for unfamiliar accounts or inquiries.
- Consider a credit freeze or fraud alert. A freeze restricts access to your credit report for most prospective creditors, making it harder for someone to open new credit in your name; you may need to lift it when applying for credit.
- A fraud alert asks creditors to take extra steps to verify your identity before extending credit. A freeze and an alert are protective options, not paid products.
Payment card or bank information
- Check recent transactions for charges or transfers you do not recognize.
- Contact the bank or card issuer using the number on your card, a statement, or its official website or app. Ask whether the account or card should be blocked, replaced, or closed; the right action depends on what was exposed and the account involved.
Health or insurance information
Follow the notice’s instructions. If account access, insurance claims, or provider records may be involved, contact the provider or insurer through a known channel and ask what to review or secure. There is no single remedy for every kind of health information exposure.
Evidence your information has been misused
If you find unfamiliar accounts or other signs of identity theft, report it at IdentityTheft.gov and follow the recovery plan it provides. Depending on the situation, consider a fraud alert or credit freeze as well.

3. Evaluate the company’s protection offer
A company may offer free credit monitoring or identity protection after a breach. Check what information or reports the service monitors, how long the free offer lasts, and whether identity restoration help is included. Monitoring may help you spot certain activity, but it does not undo the exposure or cover every type of fraud. You do not need to buy a paid service to follow the core steps in the FTC’s breach response guide.
4. Keep watching the accounts that matter
For the accounts and information involved, keep checking statements, account activity, and credit reports for changes you do not recognize. Follow updates through the company’s verified website, app, or published contact channel. If a new sign of misuse appears, use the recovery steps for that type of information rather than assuming the original response covers it.
