Before moving an AI workload to another GPU cloud provider, define what must keep working and how you will prove it. A familiar GPU product name is not enough: check the exact GPU and memory, host and network topology, drivers and software stack, storage behavior, security controls, capacity, service terms, and total cost. Then run the real container with representative data, compare the results with written acceptance thresholds, and keep the source environment available until the destination passes stability and recovery tests.
What should I decide before comparing GPU clouds?
Set the migration boundary and acceptance criteria before evaluating providers. Otherwise, a destination can look cheaper or faster on paper while quietly changing the model, data path, security responsibilities, or operating assumptions that determine whether the workload is actually viable.
Inventory the complete workload
List more than the model code. Include model weights, datasets, checkpoints, logs, secrets, dependencies, container and operating-system images, registries, orchestration, external services, and the user traffic or training schedule the system supports. Identify which components move, which remain in place, and what has to communicate across the boundary.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteInclude the operational path as well as the compute path: image builds, job submission, health checks, autoscaling, monitoring, backups, restore procedures, and access for engineers and services. An omitted dependency can become a migration blocker even if the model itself runs.

Write measurable acceptance thresholds
Record current results and minimum acceptable results for correctness or model quality, latency, throughput, startup time, failure rate, GPU health and utilization, cost per job or request, data integrity, and recovery. Use workload-specific thresholds rather than broad labels such as “production ready.” Specify how long the destination must remain stable and what precise observation triggers rollback.
For each metric, define the test conditions: model version, input or dataset, batch size, concurrency, hardware shape, warm-up procedure, and measurement window. That makes the source-to-destination comparison meaningful and gives both teams a shared pass/fail definition.
Will my CUDA and container stack run on the new GPU cloud?
It will run reliably only if the destination supports the exact hardware, driver, CUDA, framework, container, and orchestration combination your workload needs—and the complete stack passes a test there. A cloud listing that names the same GPU family does not establish compatibility or performance.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Record and pin the software stack
Capture container image digests, operating-system packages, CUDA and driver versions, framework builds, Python and system libraries, GPU operator or device-plugin versions, Kubernetes version, scheduler configuration, and software licenses. Pin versions or image digests where practical so a rebuild or retry does not silently change the test.
Microsoft’s Azure compute guidance emphasizes validating prerequisites, version control, automation, suitable VM sizes and orchestration, and compatible drivers plus NVIDIA Container Toolkit. Its general point that containers provide a consistent, reproducible environment is useful only when the destination can supply compatible drivers and hardware beneath that container.
Test the actual image and lifecycle
Start the production image on the target rather than relying on a toy example. Verify that it can see the expected devices, load the model, read its data, restore a checkpoint, pass health checks, and write outputs. Exercise autoscaling and node replacement as well as the successful first launch; startup and recovery behavior can differ from steady-state execution.

Confirm that licensing permits the intended use in the new environment, and identify any dependencies on provider-specific APIs, storage mounts, schedulers, or identity services. If the workload depends on a specific operator or device plugin, check supported versions and who maintains upgrades.
How do I verify GPU memory, topology, and performance?
Ask for the exact GPU generation and memory configuration, then validate the actual placement and communication paths your workload will receive. The right GPU name cannot compensate for insufficient memory, an unexpected partition, weak host resources, or a slower interconnect.
Check the complete hardware shape
- GPU generation, memory per GPU, and any MIG or other partitioning behavior used by the workload.
- Host CPU and RAM, local scratch capacity, and whether the scratch space persists or disappears when an instance is replaced.
- Intra-host links between GPUs, cross-host fabric, network bandwidth, and placement guarantees for multi-GPU or multi-node jobs.
- Whether the provider can deliver the required capacity in the region, zone, and cluster shape you plan to use—not only as an isolated test instance.
For distributed training or multi-GPU inference, run collective-communication and synchronization tests on the exact cluster shape. A single-GPU result cannot establish that scaling across devices or hosts will work acceptably.
Distinguish reference benchmarks from your acceptance test
NVIDIA’s Requirements for AI Clouds v2.4, published September 1, 2026, calls for benchmark evidence on a uniform hardware cluster type. It says to run the latest public Exemplar Performance suite and achieve performance within 5% of an NVIDIA-provided target for each scalable unit. This is a reference requirement for AI cloud performance evidence; it does not replace testing your model, inputs, and operating conditions.
Ask what hardware was used for any benchmark, whether the cluster was uniform, what software versions were installed, and whether the result represents a scalable unit comparable to yours. Then run your own representative workload against the thresholds you set before the comparison.

What storage and data-transfer behavior should I test?
Measure the path from data arrival through model loading, processing, checkpointing, and recovery. Storage labels alone do not tell you whether the destination will meet the workload’s throughput, latency, durability, or persistence needs.

Test reads, writes, and recovery
- Measure filesystem or object-store semantics, read and write throughput, IOPS, and latency with representative data sizes and access patterns.
- Measure cache warm-up and model-load time, not just steady-state processing.
- Check checkpoint durability and restore time, and test what happens to local ephemeral data after instance replacement.
- Confirm which data is persistent, where it is stored, and how retention and deletion are handled.
Map each source-to-destination transfer route. Document encryption in transit, integrity checks, key ownership, staging locations, and who verifies that the received data is complete and usable. Estimate transfer duration and include temporary staging storage, source egress, and inter-region or inter-zone traffic in the migration plan.
How should I rebuild security and compliance controls?
Treat the move as a change in security ownership, not simply a relocation of compute. Re-map identity, permissions, network boundaries, encryption, logging, incident response, and regulatory scope against the destination’s shared-responsibility boundaries.
Review controls across the workload
- Use short-lived workload credentials and least privilege; verify both cloud IAM and Kubernetes RBAC.
- Encrypt data in transit and at rest, establish who controls the keys, and document how secrets are stored and rotated.
- Prefer private networking and default-deny network policies where appropriate; review tenant isolation and sensitive-node placement.
- Scan and sign container images and model artifacts, and define how artifacts are admitted to production.
- Enable audit logs and centralized monitoring, assign incident-response ownership, and check that alerts reach the responsible team.
- Confirm data residency, applicable regulatory scope, retention, and deletion obligations for every region and service in the design.
Google’s Kubernetes security guidance recommends options including confidential or shielded nodes where appropriate, workload identity federation, private nodes, default-deny NetworkPolicies, Secret Manager, artifact scanning, audit logging, monitoring, and incident response. These are controls to evaluate against the workload and provider implementation, not a checklist that automatically makes a deployment compliant.
What SLA, capacity, and support terms should I ask about?
Get service, capacity, measurement, support, maintenance, and remedy terms in writing, and compare them with the workload’s own objectives. A headline uptime percentage does not tell you whether GPUs will be available when needed, whether telemetry will arrive in time, or what remedy applies when service misses its target.
Separate service availability from usable capacity
NVIDIA’s v2.4 Requirements for AI Clouds says, “The managed Kubernetes cluster control plane must provide the following service levels.” Its reference targets include managed Kubernetes control-plane availability, managed inference endpoint availability when offered, telemetry delivery, and monthly metering accuracy. These published reference figures are distinct from the terms of a particular provider contract.
By contrast, NVIDIA’s 2025 DGX Cloud SLA lists 99% service availability and 95% capacity availability per calendar month, subject to exclusions and credit remedies. The figures describe different measures and should not be treated as interchangeable guarantees. Check the applicable agreement’s definitions, exclusions, measurement window, claim process, and remedy rather than assuming another cloud offers equivalent terms.

| Measure | Published figure | How to interpret it |

| Managed Kubernetes control-plane availability | 99.95% target | NVIDIA Requirements for AI Clouds v2.4, published September 1, 2026; a reference target, not automatically a contract commitment. |
| Managed inference endpoint availability | 99.9% target when offered | NVIDIA Requirements for AI Clouds v2.4, published September 1, 2026; applies to managed inference endpoints when present. |
| Telemetry delivery | 99.95% within 120 seconds | NVIDIA Requirements for AI Clouds v2.4, published September 1, 2026; check how the provider defines delivery and measures compliance. |
| Monthly metering accuracy | ±0.5% for shared or serverless capacity; ±0.1% for dedicated capacity | NVIDIA Requirements for AI Clouds v2.4, published September 1, 2026; ask how metering disputes are investigated and corrected. |

| DGX Cloud capacity availability | 95% per calendar month | NVIDIA DGX Cloud SLA, 2025; a separate measure from service availability, with exclusions and credit remedies. |
Get operational commitments, not just percentages
Ask for written terms covering GPU capacity and reservation or allocation behavior; control-plane and endpoint availability; scheduled maintenance; support response and escalation; telemetry delivery; and metering accuracy. For data protection, ask about backup and restore responsibilities, recovery point objective (RPO), recovery time objective (RTO), and the evidence required to claim a remedy. Confirm who handles incidents and how termination, data export, and deletion work.
How do GPU cloud prices compare after egress and storage?
Compare the total cost of operating and moving the workload, not a headline GPU hourly rate. The migration can add material costs for data transfer, staging, storage, idle capacity, engineering, licensing, and overlapping operation while the old environment remains live.
Build a like-for-like cost model
Estimate costs for the same workload volume, performance target, region, and operating period. Include:
- On-demand and committed GPU rates, plus the CPU and memory paired with the GPUs.
- Persistent and scratch storage, snapshots, data staging, and registry or artifact storage.
- Interconnect and regional or zonal traffic, source-cloud egress, and ongoing movement between services.
- Observability, support, software licenses, and any fees tied to managed orchestration or data services.
- Idle headroom needed for capacity, startup, queueing, or failure recovery; migration engineering; and rollback overlap.
Use the measured cost per accepted job or request where possible, alongside total monthly cost. A lower unit rate can be offset by a different throughput, longer model loads, more idle capacity, or transfer fees. Recheck current regional prices and contract exclusions immediately before signing; published or quoted prices can change and may not include every charge.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can I benchmark the destination and roll back safely?
Pre-stage immutable images and the required data, then test a representative training job or a small inference-traffic slice before a full cutover. Expand only when the destination passes the pre-agreed thresholds, and keep the source environment available through the stability period and a recovery exercise.

- Run the workload under controlled conditions. Use the real image and a representative model, dataset, batch size, and cluster shape. Record startup and model-load time before measuring steady-state behavior.
- Compare against the acceptance criteria. Check quality or correctness, latency, throughput, failures, GPU health and utilization, checkpoint restore, data integrity, and cost per job or request.
- Exercise failure and recovery paths. Test a node replacement or equivalent failure scenario, confirm checkpoint recovery and data persistence, and verify that monitoring and incident escalation work.
- Expand gradually. Route a small inference slice or limited training workload first. Increase only after the agreed observation window passes without violating thresholds.
- Keep rollback available. Preserve the source environment and the last safe point until the destination satisfies the stability and recovery criteria. Decommission only after recovery has been demonstrated and data export or deletion requirements are met.
Write the rollback trigger before the first production test: for example, which threshold failure, integrity issue, or recovery failure stops expansion. Define who can call rollback, how traffic or job submission returns to the source, and how outputs created during the test are reconciled. A rollback plan is not proven until the recovery path has been exercised.

What should go in a provider scorecard?
Use the same workload assumptions and evidence standard for each candidate. Score the dimensions below separately so that a low price does not conceal a portability, capacity, security, or exit risk.
| Scorecard dimension | Evidence to record |
|---|---|
| Compatibility and portability | Supported versions, pinned image test, provider-specific dependencies, scheduler and storage integration. |
| GPU memory, topology, and measured performance | Exact hardware shape, partitioning, placement, interconnect tests, workload benchmark results. |
| Storage and data transfer | Read/write behavior, model-load and checkpoint results, transfer duration, integrity and egress costs. |
| Security and compliance | Identity, isolation, encryption and key ownership, residency, logs, incident responsibilities. |
| Capacity, availability, and support | Written allocation terms, applicable SLA definitions and exclusions, support and maintenance commitments. |
| Full cost including egress | GPU and CPU, storage, traffic, licensing, idle headroom, support, engineering, and overlap. |
| Operational tooling and observability | Telemetry timeliness, metering, alerts, audit access, job and GPU health visibility. |
| Migration duration | Data staging and transfer time, build and validation work, cutover window. |
| Rollback and exit effort | Recovery exercise, source retention, export path, termination and deletion procedure. |
| Contract remedies | Measurement method, exclusions, claim deadlines, credits or other remedies, escalation path. |
Prefer evidence from the exact destination configuration over a generic product description. A portable AI deployment depends on pinned images and dependencies, explicit hardware and topology requirements, tested scheduler and storage integration, integrity-protected transfer, representative performance and recovery tests, and verified capacity, price, egress, and support terms.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an uptime SLA guarantee that my GPU job will finish on time?
No. Availability language may cover a control plane or endpoint rather than the completion time of a queued or running job. Check how interruptions, capacity shortages, maintenance, and job-level recovery are treated in the agreement.
Should I move model weights before datasets?
There is no universal order: it depends on which assets are needed to validate the real workload and how the transfer routes are secured. Plan staging so that the acceptance test can use representative inputs without bypassing integrity checks or data-handling controls.
Can I rely on a cloud provider’s benchmark when selecting a GPU?
Use a provider benchmark to understand the tested hardware and conditions, not as a substitute for your own acceptance run. Results are useful only when the cluster shape, software stack, workload behavior, and measurement method are comparable to your deployment.
When is it safe to delete the old GPU environment?
Only after the destination has met its defined stability criteria, recovery has been exercised, and required outputs and data are accounted for. Also confirm that export, retention, and deletion obligations have been satisfied before ending the source service.
