As of October 3, 2026, the gathered sources do not establish the rumored display’s final features, price, or sale date. If you need Apple Home hub functions now, Apple lists existing options including HomePod mini and Apple TV; HomePod mini is a speaker, not a screen.
1. Confirm the product is real and available
Separate Apple-confirmed details from reporting about a possible future product. Tom’s Guide reported that an announcement on October 13, 2026 was expected, but that is a report about a prospective announcement—not confirmation from Apple, a product specification, or a guarantee that the device will be available on that date. Before placing an order, look for an Apple product page or official announcement that identifies the model and confirms its availability. Until then, details such as its screen, interface, supported smart-home standards, placement options, price, and release timing should be treated as unverified.
2. Check that your accessories work with Apple Home
Make a list of the lights, locks, sensors, thermostats, and other devices you want to control, then check compatibility for each specific model. Apple says compatible accessories can be controlled through the Home app and Siri; its Home app page describes the ecosystem.

Do not assume that an accessory will work just because it connects to Wi-Fi, uses a familiar brand, or is described as “smart.” Check the manufacturer’s compatibility information and the accessory’s supported functions. Apple’s Works with Apple Home badge guidelines provide guidance for identifying compatible products.
3. Check Matter and Thread separately
Matter compatibility
Matter is intended to improve compatibility among smart-home platforms, but the label alone does not tell you which functions a specific accessory supports or what setup it needs. Apple says Matter accessories can be added to Apple Home through the Home app or a HomeKit-based app. Confirm the exact accessory’s supported features before buying.

Thread requirements
Some Matter accessories use Thread. Apple Support says Thread-enabled Matter accessories need a Thread-enabled home hub, and lists HomePod mini and certain Apple TV 4K configurations as examples. Check the exact model and network requirements for both the accessory and the hub in Apple’s home hub setup guidance; do not infer Thread support from the presence of a screen or from a general Matter claim.
4. Decide whether you need a home hub, a display, or both
In Apple’s terminology, a home hub enables control of your home while you are away, sharing control with other people, and automations. Those are hub functions, not proof of what a future display will support. Check that the specific product’s official details confirm the functions you need.

If your immediate need is a current Apple Home hub, Apple HomePod mini is an existing option that Apple says can act as a hub for HomeKit and Matter accessories. It is a speaker without a display, so it does not provide the rumored screen-based experience.

Once Apple publishes specifications for a display, compare it with your needs on the points below. At present, the rumored device’s values are not established by the cited evidence.

If you need remote Apple Home control, shared access, or automations now, assess an existing hub against your accessory list and required standards. If what you specifically want is a screen, the current HomePod mini is not a substitute; waiting for confirmed display specifications is the more informed choice.
