Before buying an AI-focused ETF, verify what the fund means by “AI,” inspect its actual holdings and concentration, compare every investor cost, and understand how its shares and underlying securities trade. Then match those findings with your time horizon, tolerance for loss, and existing technology exposure. A thematic label is not a diversification guarantee: an ETF may be concentrated in a few chipmakers, cloud companies, software vendors, robotics firms, or foreign stocks. Use the fund’s current summary prospectus, statutory prospectus, shareholder report, holdings file, index methodology, and issuer data immediately before investing. The Securities and Exchange Commission’s practical rule is simple: “Do not invest in something that you do not understand.”
What does an AI-focused ETF actually invest in?
An AI ETF can target the infrastructure that enables artificial intelligence, the companies that develop models and software, or businesses that adopt AI in their operations. Two funds with “AI” in their names can therefore have very different portfolios and risks.
Common definitions of AI exposure
- Infrastructure: semiconductor designers and manufacturers, networking equipment, data-center hardware, power systems, and cooling technology.
- Cloud and platforms: companies providing computing capacity, model hosting, data services, and developer tools.
- Software and applications: firms selling machine-learning platforms, enterprise software, cybersecurity, analytics, or generative-AI products.
- Robotics and autonomous systems: industrial robots, warehouse automation, autonomous vehicles, sensors, and control systems.
- AI adopters: companies in other industries that use AI to improve products, logistics, customer service, or research.
- Mixed themes: portfolios combining several of these groups, sometimes alongside companies with only an indirect connection to AI.
Read the investment objective and the index or portfolio-construction rules instead of relying on the fund name. Look for a stated revenue threshold, an eligibility screen, a definition of “AI,” and rules explaining how companies are added or removed. The SEC advises investors to ask how an index is constructed and what securities the fund actually owns.

What the fund’s policy can reveal
Some funds commit a specific portion of assets to a theme. For example, SEC-filed materials for Tuttle AI Substrate and AI Capacitor ETFs describe an 80% AI Substrate policy. Those materials also describe tests involving an issuer’s competitive “edge,” asymmetric return potential, liquidity, market capitalization, and valuation, followed by modified equal weighting. That is a useful illustration of how a methodology can be more specific than a marketing label; it is not evidence that every AI ETF uses the same tests.

Determine whether the fund is index-based or actively managed. An index fund follows published eligibility, weighting, and rebalancing rules, although the index provider can change those rules. An active fund gives a portfolio manager discretion to interpret AI exposure, select securities, and adjust positions. Neither approach is automatically safer; the distinction tells you where the selection decisions come from and what documents to monitor.
How do I verify that an ETF really has AI exposure?
Use the fund’s current filings and holdings file to test the stated objective against the portfolio. A credible review connects the theme definition to identifiable companies, weights, and selection rules.
- Read the summary prospectus first. Confirm the objective, principal strategies, principal risks, adviser, operating expenses, and the documents supplied for more information.
- Open the statutory prospectus. Check the full description of the index, active process, eligible securities, derivatives, foreign investments, cash policy, and permitted changes.
- Find the index methodology or manager rules. Record the AI definition, minimum revenue or exposure threshold, market-cap requirements, liquidity screens, weighting formula, and rebalancing schedule.
- Download the latest holdings file. Note each issuer’s name, security type, weight, country, sector classification, and whether the position is an operating company, holding company, fund, or derivative.
- Compare the holdings with the stated theme. Ask what economic connection each large position has to AI and whether that connection is direct, enabling, or merely incidental.
- Check the shareholder report. It can show portfolio turnover, principal positions, financial statements, and explanations of changes that a daily holdings file does not provide.
Alger AI Enablers & Adopters ETF (ALAI), for example, states in its April 30, 2025 summary prospectus that its objective is long-term capital appreciation and directs investors to the prospectus, shareholder reports, and other fund information before investing. The example demonstrates why the objective and the supporting filings matter more than the ticker’s theme word.

Concentration checks to make
| Measure | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Largest position | Issuer and portfolio percentage on the same date | A single company can dominate returns and losses. |
| Top five and top ten | Combined percentage and the names included | Shows whether many holdings are economically driven by a few companies. |
| Number of holdings | Total positions, including cash or derivatives where disclosed | A high count does not guarantee independent sources of risk. |
| Sector allocation | Technology, semiconductors, communication services, industrials, and other sectors | Reveals whether the fund is effectively a sector bet. |
| Country and currency | Issuer domicile, listing venue, and currency exposure | Identifies foreign-market, currency, political, and trading-hour risks. |
| Market capitalization | Large-, mid-, and small-cap exposure, if stated | Smaller companies can have greater liquidity and business risk. |
| Rebalancing | Scheduled and extraordinary rebalance rules | Weights and exposure can change even when the fund’s name does not. |
Review the same measures after a rebalance or a sharp market move. A modified equal-weight approach can reduce the dominance of the largest companies at one rebalance, but price changes can quickly recreate concentration. Conversely, a market-cap-weighted fund can become increasingly dependent on the largest beneficiaries of an AI cycle.
Which costs should I compare between AI ETFs?
Compare the expense ratio and the costs you incur when buying, selling, and holding shares. A lower stated expense ratio is not automatically cheaper if the fund has wide spreads, high turnover, or persistent trading-price deviations from NAV.
| Cost or metric | What to capture | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Gross expense ratio | Annual operating expenses before waivers | Shows the contractual cost structure before temporary reductions. |
| Net expense ratio | Annual expenses after any waiver or reimbursement | Check the waiver’s end date and conditions; it may not be permanent. |
| Brokerage commission | Your broker’s charge, if any | Often separate from the ETF’s expense ratio and dependent on your account and order. |
| Bid-ask spread | Typical or median spread under normal conditions | You pay the spread indirectly when buying near the ask or selling near the bid. |
| Turnover | Portfolio turnover rate in the shareholder report | Higher turnover can increase transaction costs and taxable distributions. |
| Premium or discount to NAV | Historical range and frequency of deviations | You may pay more or receive less than the value of the underlying holdings. |
| Tracking difference | How the fund’s return differs from its index, where applicable | Captures expenses, trading frictions, sampling, and implementation effects. |
Investor.gov notes that even small fee differences can compound over time and points investors to the FINRA Fund Analyzer for cost comparisons. Use that type of analysis with the fund’s own disclosures, because a calculator cannot fully capture a spread that changes with market conditions or a waiver that later expires.
How to compare a waiver correctly
Record both gross and net expenses, the amount of the waiver, and its stated expiration or termination terms. Treat the net figure as the current contractual result, not a promise that the fund will always operate at that level. If two funds are otherwise similar, compare the expected cost after the waiver period as well as the current net figure.

What should I check about ETF trading, liquidity, and NAV?
ETF shares trade intraday on an exchange at market prices, while the fund calculates a net asset value (NAV) for its portfolio. The share price can be above or below NAV, particularly when markets are stressed or the underlying securities are difficult to trade.
Trading data to review
- Historical premium and discount: Examine both the average and the worst deviations, not only the latest figure.
- Median bid-ask spread: A median spread is more informative than a single snapshot taken during unusually quiet trading.
- Volume and assets: Low volume or a small asset base can make execution harder, although the creation and redemption process also affects liquidity.
- Underlying liquidity: Check whether the holdings trade frequently and in the same market hours as the ETF.
- Creation and redemption conditions: Read the prospectus for authorized-participant procedures, cash or in-kind settlement, and circumstances that can restrict or delay the process.
- Trading halts and delisting language: Understand what can happen if an exchange halts the ETF or the fund is closed.
Do not equate the ETF’s displayed volume with the liquidity of every underlying security. A fund can trade actively while owning thinly traded foreign or small-cap companies, and those holdings can make NAV harder to estimate during market stress. For a planned purchase, compare quotes at the time of the order and consider whether a market order could execute materially away from the price you expected.
What risks are specific to AI-themed ETFs?
Read the principal-risk section for the fund you are considering; thematic, technology, foreign-market, concentration, valuation, and active-management risks can overlap.
| Risk | What can go wrong | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Theme-definition risk | The index or manager may classify an issuer as AI-related even when the connection is indirect, or the theme may develop differently than expected. | What evidence qualifies a company, and who can change the definition? |
| Technology risk | Rapid obsolescence, failed products, cybersecurity incidents, regulation, or supply constraints can reduce revenue and valuations. | Is the portfolio dependent on one technology, supplier, or development cycle? |
| Concentration risk | A few issuers, sectors, or countries can drive most of the result. | What are the top-five and top-ten weights after the latest rebalance? |
| Valuation risk | Investor enthusiasm can price in years of growth, leaving shares vulnerable if earnings or adoption disappoint. | How does the fund’s valuation compare with the broader market, and does the methodology consider valuation? |
| Foreign-market and currency risk | Political events, different accounting standards, capital controls, and exchange-rate movements can affect foreign holdings. | Which countries are represented, and is currency exposure hedged? |
| Liquidity and premium/discount risk | Wide spreads, trading halts, or stressed underlying markets can make execution expensive and prices diverge from NAV. | How did the fund trade during prior market disruptions? |
| Active-management risk | A manager’s judgments can be wrong, and the portfolio can differ substantially from an AI index or the broader market. | What discretion does the manager have, and how consistently has the stated process been applied? |
| Closure or delisting risk | A fund can be liquidated or removed from an exchange, forcing a taxable or poorly timed sale. | What does the prospectus say about liquidation, delisting, and shareholder notices? |
The iShares Robotics and Artificial Intelligence ETF prospectus illustrates the kind of language to look for: it warns that securities may be incorrectly identified as belonging to a theme or that a theme may develop unexpectedly, and it discusses premium/discount, trading-halt, and delisting risks. Treat those disclosures as prompts for questions, not as evidence that another fund has identical exposure.

How do I compare two or more AI ETFs fairly?
Put the funds on one worksheet and compare like-for-like data taken on the same date. A side-by-side process prevents a low headline fee or a familiar ticker from overshadowing larger differences in construction and risk.
| Comparison axis | Data to place side by side |
|---|---|
| Theme definition | AI categories covered, revenue or eligibility threshold, and treatment of adopters and enablers |
| Management method | Index-based or active; adviser; discretion to add, remove, or size positions |
| Portfolio shape | Holdings count, largest position, top-five and top-ten weights, sectors, countries, currencies, and market caps |
| Costs | Gross and net expense ratios, waiver terms, turnover, commissions, spread, and premium/discount history |
| Implementation | Rebalancing schedule, creation/redemption process, NAV tracking, assets, and trading volume |
| Risk language | Thematic, technology, foreign-market, concentration, valuation, active-management, closure, and delisting disclosures |
| Portfolio fit | Overlap with your existing holdings, acceptable loss, time horizon, and role in the portfolio |
If a value is not disclosed in a comparable form, mark it as “not stated” and investigate rather than substituting a guess. Compare dates carefully: a holdings file from one rebalance and an expense ratio from another reporting period can create a misleading picture.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is the practical pre-purchase checklist?
Complete these steps immediately before placing an order, because holdings, fees, assets, methodology, and risk wording can change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Write down your intended role for the ETF. Decide whether it is a small thematic allocation, a replacement for a broader equity fund, or a short-term trade. Then check whether that role is consistent with your time horizon and ability to tolerate loss.
- Save the current documents. Keep the summary prospectus, statutory prospectus, latest shareholder report, holdings file, index methodology, and the issuer’s current data page.
- Translate the theme into exposures. List the companies and industries you expect to own, then verify that the actual portfolio provides that exposure.
- Calculate concentration. Add the top-five and top-ten weights, identify country and currency exposure, and check for overlap with your other funds and individual stocks.
- Build a complete cost estimate. Include the applicable net and gross expense ratios, waiver terms, commission, spread, expected turnover effects, and any premium or discount.
- Review execution conditions. Check current bid and ask quotes, recent spread data, volume, NAV, and whether the underlying market is open and liquid.
- Read the risk disclosures. Highlight statements about thematic classification, technology, valuation, foreign markets, concentration, active management, trading halts, closure, and delisting.
- Set a review date. Recheck the methodology, holdings, fees, and risk documents after the next rebalance, a material strategy change, or a major market event.
How should an AI ETF fit into an existing portfolio?
Evaluate the ETF as an exposure, not as a label. If your other funds already hold large technology companies or semiconductor manufacturers, adding an AI ETF may increase the same risk even when the number of funds in your account rises.

Questions for portfolio fit
- Would a large decline in growth-oriented technology stocks jeopardize a financial goal?
- How much of the portfolio is already exposed to the same companies, sectors, countries, or currencies?
- Can you hold through a period when AI adoption grows but the fund’s valuation falls?
- Is the fund’s objective compatible with your need for income, capital preservation, or broad diversification?
- What event would make you review or reduce the position, and how often will you check it?
Past performance can illustrate historical volatility and drawdowns, but Investor.gov emphasizes that it does not predict future returns. Use performance history to understand how the fund behaved in particular periods, not as proof that its theme will outperform.
When should I repeat these checks?
Repeat the review before every new purchase and after events that can alter exposure. At minimum, revisit the fund after a scheduled rebalance, a methodology amendment, a fee-waiver change, a merger, a sharp asset change, or a notice about closure or delisting.
Keep the date beside every number you record. The largest holding, top-ten concentration, expense ratio, assets, spread, premium or discount, and even the meaning of “AI” can change. A review that was accurate several months ago may no longer describe the ETF you are about to buy.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI ETF fall even when AI adoption is increasing?
Yes. A fund’s share price reflects expectations, valuation, financing conditions, and the specific companies it owns, not just the long-term growth of AI use. Adoption can rise while a concentrated portfolio declines because earnings disappoint, competition increases, or investors pay lower prices for future growth.
How often should I download an ETF holdings file?
Download it when you are considering a purchase and again after the fund’s scheduled rebalance or a material market event. Daily files can be useful, but they may be subject to publication timing and can differ from the positions shown in the latest shareholder report.
Is an AI ETF suitable as my only stock investment?
Usually, a narrowly themed ETF is better evaluated as one exposure within a diversified plan rather than as a complete equity portfolio. Whether it can serve as a core holding depends on its breadth, concentration, costs, and how much overlap it has with the rest of your assets.
What happens if an AI ETF is liquidated?
The fund normally announces a liquidation timetable and stops accepting new investments before a final distribution, but procedures and tax consequences vary. Read the fund’s notice and prospectus, and check how the liquidation date could affect your account, tax lot, and reinvestment plan.
