Before buying a used or refurbished iPhone, make sure you can activate it, inspect its condition, check battery and repair information, confirm it works with your carrier, and understand the seller’s return terms. Do not accept a phone that remains linked to its previous owner’s Apple Account.
What should you check before buying a used iPhone?
- Activation and ownership: Have the seller erase the iPhone and remove it from their Apple Account. Begin setup before you accept the device. If setup asks for the previous owner’s account, stop: the seller must resolve Activation Lock. Apple says a device is ready for a new owner when setup reaches the Hello screen. See Apple’s Activation Lock instructions.
- Condition and basic functions: Inspect the display, frame, back, and charging connector rather than relying on listing photos. Power on the phone and check that it charges; Apple advises against buying one that will not charge. With the seller’s help, unlock or erase it so you can test basic functions.
- Battery and repair information: Review the battery-health screen and Parts and Service History, if available. Read any warnings, not just the displayed battery figure.
- Carrier compatibility: Check whether the phone is carrier-locked, then confirm it is compatible with the network you plan to use in your country.
- Seller recourse: Check the return window, qualifying conditions, and return process. Ask what the seller’s “certified” or “refurbished” label means and what was inspected; those terms do not guarantee the same checks across sellers.
How do you check whether a used iPhone is unlocked?
On the iPhone, open Settings > General > About and look for the carrier-lock information. Apple’s pre-owned iPhone guide says “No SIM restrictions” means the iPhone is unlocked; if a network provider is listed, a restriction may apply. Confirm the device will work with your intended carrier and country rather than assuming that an unlocked status alone guarantees compatibility. See Apple’s guide to buying a pre-owned iPhone.
How do you check an iPhone’s battery health?
Open the Battery section in Settings and look for Battery Health information. The exact menu wording can vary with iOS. Pay attention to service or verification messages as well as the reported health: Apple warns that if the iPhone cannot verify its battery, the battery-health information may not be accurate. Treat the screen as one clue, not a guarantee of remaining battery life. Account for possible replacement need and uncertainty when deciding what the phone is worth to you. Apple explains the limitations in About genuine iPhone batteries.
Apple does not define a universal battery-health percentage that makes a used iPhone acceptable. Consider the reported condition alongside the phone’s price, your expected use, and the seller’s return terms.

How do you tell whether an iPhone has been repaired?
On supported models running iOS 15.2 or later, go to Settings > General > About and look for Parts and Service History. The section and components shown depend on the model, iOS version, and repair; only the most recent service for a part may appear. A missing history does not prove the phone was never repaired. Use the screen as a disclosure aid, not a complete repair record or independent inspection.
| Label | What it can indicate |
|---|---|
| Genuine | The repair used genuine Apple parts and processes. |
| Unknown | The part may be non-genuine, incompletely installed, previously used, or not functioning as expected. |
| Unverified | Can refer to a replaced logic board and may affect features such as Apple Pay. |
| Used | On supported configurations, the part was previously used or installed in another iPhone. |
These labels are not interchangeable and do not by themselves establish the phone’s overall condition. Apple says used Apple parts and repairs performed with used Apple parts are not covered by Apple’s product warranty or an AppleCare plan. Terms can depend on location and current policy, so check what applies to the specific device and region. See Apple’s Parts and Service History details and Parts Support for iPhone.

What should you do when inspecting a phone in person?
- Remove the case and accessories so you can inspect the edges, back, and charging connector.
- Look for cracks or scratches on the display, dents or scuffs on the body, and damage or debris in the connector.
- Power on the phone and check that it charges. Do not proceed if the seller will not let you verify basic operation.
- If it is locked to the seller’s passcode, ask them to erase it and help you begin setup. Stop if Activation Lock asks for the previous owner’s account.
- Review Parts and Service History and battery-health messages, if available.
- Try Wi-Fi and the available buttons and controls. Apple’s guide specifically mentions volume buttons, the Ring/Silent switch, and the side button; controls differ by model.
What should you ask before buying online?
- What exact model and storage capacity is being sold?
- What is the physical condition, and does it match the listing description?
- What battery status or warning messages are visible?
- What does the seller’s certification or refurbishment process include?
- What parts or service history is available, and what is the carrier-lock status?
- How long is the return window, what conditions qualify, and how do you arrange a return?
Inspect the actual phone promptly when it arrives. If its condition differs from the listing, follow the seller’s return process within the applicable window.

Compare the same factors across each listing instead of relying on a grade or a single battery figure. Apple’s guidance does not set a universal acceptable battery percentage, used-phone price, or best seller, and marketplace grading labels are not Apple standards.
