Before buying a thematic artificial-intelligence ETF, verify what the fund defines as “AI,” what it actually owns, how concentrated those holdings are, and how the fund’s total costs and trading price compare with alternatives. Read the current summary and statutory prospectuses, the Statement of Additional Information (SAI), shareholder reports and dated holdings. Then test the fund against your existing portfolio, risk tolerance and time horizon. An AI label and strong past return are clues to investigate—not evidence that the fund will capture future AI growth. Fund rules, expenses, holdings and disclosures can change, so confirm every figure in the latest SEC filing and issuer materials before placing an order.
What should I check before buying a thematic AI fund?
Start with a written definition of the exposure you want, then determine whether the fund’s rules and portfolio deliver it. The essential checks are theme eligibility, actual holdings, concentration, overlap, risks, all-in costs, trading conditions, operating history and benchmark performance.
- Theme promise: Is the ETF index-tracking or actively managed? What activities qualify as AI, what minimum percentage of assets must qualify, and when are holdings rebalanced?
- Portfolio reality: Record the latest full holdings, position weights, number of issuers, industries, countries and overlap with your other investments.
- Risk profile: Read the fund’s own discussion of thematic-selection, concentration, technology, foreign-market, liquidity and tracking risks.
- Ownership cost: Compare gross and net expense ratios, waiver end dates, turnover, transaction costs, bid-ask spread and historical premiums or discounts to net asset value (NAV).
- Context: Compare funds using the same dates and measures, and decide whether a narrow theme fits your intended allocation and holding period.
The SEC’s Investor Bulletin on exchange-traded funds explains that ETF shares trade throughout the day and can sell above or below the value of their underlying holdings. Its guidance is a useful starting point, but each fund’s prospectus controls the details.

Summary prospectus
The summary prospectus should state the investment objective, principal strategies, fee table, principal risks, performance presentation and intermediary-compensation disclosures. Confirm whether the fund seeks to track an index before fees and expenses or gives an adviser discretion to select securities. The SEC’s Mutual Funds and ETFs: A Guide for Investors describes the prospectus as the place to review a fund’s objectives, risks and expenses.
Statutory prospectus
Read the full statutory prospectus when the summary leaves a material question open. It contains the complete objective, security-selection rules, principal risks, portfolio-turnover information, performance, tax information and conflicts. For an index ETF, inspect the index methodology, eligibility screens, weighting formula, reconstitution schedule and tracking objective. For an active ETF, look for the adviser’s stated process, discretion and limits.
Statement of Additional Information
The SAI supplies operating information that may not fit in the prospectus, including policies, service providers, brokerage and transaction arrangements and other fund administration details. The SEC guide says investors can request the SAI. Use it to understand how the fund handles trading, valuation and other mechanics that affect implementation costs.

How do AI ETFs choose their stocks?
Translate the marketing label into a measurable eligibility rule. A company might qualify because it sells AI software, develops models, supplies chips and data-center infrastructure, automates business processes or merely uses AI within a broader operation. Determine whether the test uses current revenue, expected revenue, business classification or an index provider’s judgment.
Questions to ask about the rule
- What exact business activities make an issuer eligible?
- Is there a minimum share of revenue, assets or portfolio exposure tied to those activities?
- Can an issuer qualify because of a future expectation rather than current business results?
- Who decides eligibility—the index provider, the adviser or both—and what discretion do they have?
- How often does the portfolio rebalance, and what happens when a company no longer meets the test?
Definitions differ materially. For example, the Themes Generative Artificial Intelligence ETF summary prospectus dated January 28, 2026 says its index consists of companies with business operations in AI-related industries and that the fund seeks to track that index before fees and expenses. That language describes one fund’s method, not an industry-wide standard.

Do not stop at eligibility wording. Compare the rule with the holdings on the same date. If the largest positions are diversified technology companies, your return may depend on cloud spending, advertising, hardware cycles or other businesses in addition to AI. Several issuers may also rely on the same chip supply chain, cloud customers or capital-spending cycle, creating a common risk that the issuer count alone does not reveal.

Read the complete portfolio rather than relying on a fund name or a top-five marketing graphic. Build a dated snapshot that shows each issuer, its weight, industry, country and role in the AI value chain.
Measure concentration
Note the weight of the largest holding, the combined weight of the top five and top ten, and how many issuers account for most assets. A fund with a small number of holdings or very large positions can react sharply to news about one company. Check whether the prospectus classifies the fund as diversified or non-diversified; do not assume all AI ETFs use the same status.
Map indirect exposure
Separate model developers and AI application companies from semiconductor designers, equipment makers, data-center operators, cloud platforms and broad software businesses. Indirect suppliers can benefit from AI investment, but they also carry their own cyclical, regulatory and competitive drivers. A portfolio dominated by infrastructure may behave differently from one focused on applications even when both use “AI” in the name.
Check geography and overlap
Record country weights and identify foreign listings, American depositary receipts and companies whose revenues come mainly from overseas. Compare each position with your existing broad-market, technology or semiconductor funds. Owning the same large companies through several ETFs can make your total exposure far more concentrated than any single fund’s fact sheet suggests.

How risky are thematic AI funds?
The relevant risk is the one in the fund’s own prospectus, not a generic warning attached to every AI product. Read the principal-risk section and connect each item to the holdings and weighting method you found.

Thematic-selection risk
An index provider or adviser can identify companies incorrectly, or the AI theme can evolve in a way that does not benefit the selected securities. A risk disclosure for the Dan Ives Wedbush AI Power & Infrastructure ETF states: “Thematic Investing Risk. The Fund relies on the Index Provider to identify securities that reflect the relevant theme (AI) for inclusion in the Index. There is no guarantee that the Index or the Fund will reflect the intended theme exposures.” Read that as a warning to test the portfolio, not as proof that the fund is unsuitable.
Concentration and non-diversification
Heavy weights in a few issuers increase the effect of earnings surprises, product delays, litigation or management decisions. The same Dan Ives Wedbush AI Revolution ETF disclosure describes non-diversified-fund risk. Inspect the specific fund’s current status and limits rather than generalizing from one filing.
Technology and business risks
AI-related companies can face rapid product obsolescence, intense competition, changing customer preferences, intellectual-property disputes and regulatory or legal action. Confirm which of these risks the fund lists and identify the holdings most exposed to each one. A company’s AI revenue opportunity does not remove risks in its older or unrelated business lines.
Foreign-market and liquidity risks
Foreign securities can add currency, market-hours, settlement and regulatory differences. Less-liquid holdings can widen the ETF’s spread and make its market price diverge from NAV, especially when the underlying markets are closed. Review both the portfolio’s liquidity and the ETF’s own trading history.
Tracking risk
An index ETF can trail its benchmark because of operating expenses, transaction costs, sampling, corporate actions and portfolio implementation. Compare fund and index returns over matching periods, and make sure the comparison accounts for fees. A stated tracking objective is not a guarantee of identical returns.
New-fund and operating-history risk
A recently launched ETF has less evidence from different market conditions. Confirm its inception date, assets, available performance periods and any liquidation or closure notices in current filings. The absence of a long record is information: you cannot infer how the strategy behaves in a downturn it has never experienced.

How much does an AI ETF cost?
Use total ownership cost, not just the headline expense ratio. Record the gross and net annual expense ratios, management fee, waiver amount and expiration date, plus trading costs and turnover.
| Cost item | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Expense ratio | Gross and net annual operating expenses in the current prospectus | The net figure may depend on a temporary waiver; the gross figure shows the cost without that support. |
| Waiver | Amount, conditions and exact expiration date | A low current fee can rise when the agreement ends. |
| Turnover | Latest portfolio-turnover rate and trading policy | Frequent rebalancing can create transaction costs and taxable distributions. |
| Brokerage and spread | Your broker’s commission policy and the ETF’s bid-ask spread | A narrow spread generally reduces the cost of entering or exiting, while a wide spread can overwhelm a small expense-ratio difference. |
| Indirect trading costs | Costs of buying, selling and implementing the index or active strategy | These may not appear as a separate line in the expense ratio. |
A dated example shows why fund-specific documents matter: the Tema Healthcare AI ETF’s July 14, 2026 summary prospectus reports a 0.75% management fee and 0.75% total annual operating expenses. Its “Other Expenses” amount is estimated for the current fiscal year. This is one fund’s 2026 disclosure, not a typical fee for AI ETFs or a current quote for another product.
Compare performance after fees over identical periods whenever possible. A lower expense ratio does not ensure lower total ownership cost or better returns if turnover, spreads, liquidity or implementation differ.
How do ETF liquidity and premiums or discounts affect a purchase?
ETF shares trade at a market price that can be above or below the NAV of the underlying portfolio. Before buying, examine assets, average trading activity, bid-ask spread and historical premium/discount data rather than assuming the last quoted price equals portfolio value.
- Check the fund’s assets and typical daily trading activity.
- Review the displayed bid and ask and estimate the spread for the order size you plan to trade.
- Look for historical premiums and discounts to NAV in the prospectus or on the fund website; the SEC bulletin notes that this information may be available there.
- Identify whether major holdings trade in different time zones or are less liquid, conditions that can make NAV comparisons less precise during U.S. market hours.
- Use a limit order when you need price control, and avoid judging liquidity from a single quiet or volatile session.
Trading volume is not the only liquidity measure: an ETF can create or redeem shares through its authorized-participant mechanism even when its on-screen volume is modest, but the practical cost you face is still the spread and market conditions at your order time. Confirm the fund’s current trading characteristics rather than relying on a generic rule.
How should I compare thematic AI funds side by side?
Use one worksheet and one “as of” date for every fund. Mixing a current holdings file with an older prospectus or different performance periods can make a comparison look precise while measuring different portfolios.

| Comparison axis | Record for each fund |
|---|---|
| Theme definition | Qualifying activities, revenue or business thresholds, minimum qualifying exposure and rebalance rules |
| Portfolio | Top holdings and weights, issuer count, sector and country mix, concentration and overlap with your existing investments |
| Investment approach | Index or active, benchmark and methodology, adviser discretion, tracking record and turnover |
| Cost | Gross and net expense ratios, waiver terms and expiration, spread, turnover and transaction costs |
| Risk | Concentration, thematic-selection, technology, liquidity, foreign-market and tracking risks |
| Trading | Assets, activity, bid-ask spread, historical premium/discount to NAV and market hours of major holdings |
| History | Inception date, matching performance periods, benchmark comparison and whether the record spans varied conditions |
Performance is meaningful only when dates, benchmark, currency and fee treatment match. Compare the fund with its stated benchmark after fees where data permit, and investigate a large gap instead of assuming the theme failed. No broad authoritative statistic establishes the expected return or success rate of AI thematic funds, so do not substitute a general AI market-size forecast for fund evidence.
What does a practical pre-purchase review look like?
Complete the following sequence before submitting an order. Stop and resolve any unanswered item that could change your exposure or total cost.
- Define the intended exposure. Write whether you want model developers, infrastructure suppliers, applications or a mixture, and the maximum portfolio percentage you are willing to devote to a single theme.
- Download current documents. Save the summary prospectus, statutory prospectus, SAI, latest annual or semiannual report and complete holdings file, noting each date.
- Decode eligibility. Record qualifying activities, thresholds, index or adviser discretion and rebalance schedule in your worksheet.
- Reconstruct concentration. Calculate top-five and top-ten weights, identify common suppliers or customers and mark positions already held elsewhere.
- Read every principal-risk paragraph. Match thematic, technology, foreign-market, liquidity, concentration and tracking risks to actual issuers.
- Calculate ownership cost. Enter gross and net expenses, waiver expiry, turnover, spread and expected trading costs; distinguish recurring fees from one-time estimates.
- Check implementation. Compare fund returns with the stated benchmark over identical periods and inspect premiums or discounts to NAV.
- Test portfolio fit. Consider your time horizon, ability to tolerate losses and whether the theme duplicates a broad-market or technology allocation.
- Set an execution plan. Decide the maximum position, order type and price limit before market conditions or recent performance influence you.
What mistakes commonly derail AI-fund due diligence?
- Buying the name: “AI” does not disclose the revenue test, weighting method or minimum qualifying exposure.
- Using stale holdings: A top-ten list without an “as of” date may no longer represent the portfolio.
- Counting issuers instead of risk drivers: Many companies can depend on one chip supplier, cloud cycle or customer group.
- Comparing different periods: A fund’s one-year return and another’s three-year return do not answer the same question.
- Ignoring waivers: A temporary net expense ratio can conceal the cost that applies after the stated expiration date.
- Confusing NAV with trading price: A market quote can include a premium or discount, especially when underlying markets are closed.
- Treating past performance as a forecast: A strong period may reflect valuation expansion, hardware demand or unrelated businesses rather than durable AI economics.
- Assuming every ETF is diversified: Diversification status, issuer limits and concentration controls are fund-specific.
What is the bottom-line decision rule?
Buy only when the fund’s measurable definition, dated holdings, concentration, risk disclosures, total costs and trading conditions match the role you want in your portfolio. If you cannot explain why each major holding qualifies, how much exposure overlaps with what you already own, and what you will pay to hold and trade the ETF, the due diligence is incomplete. Recheck the latest SEC filing and issuer disclosures immediately before investing because any of those facts can change.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI ETF own a company that does not make AI software?
Yes. A fund’s eligibility rule may include chip designers, equipment suppliers, cloud platforms, automation companies or broad technology businesses if the index or adviser considers their operations AI-related. The prospectus and methodology determine the boundary, not the ticker or marketing name.
How often do thematic AI funds change their holdings?
The schedule is set by the index methodology or the active adviser and can differ widely. Look for rebalance and reconstitution language, then compare holdings from two dated files to see how quickly the portfolio can change.
Why can an ETF price differ from its NAV during the day?
The ETF trades according to supply and demand while NAV is calculated from the underlying securities. Market stress, less-liquid holdings or overseas markets that are closed can widen the gap; historical premium and discount data help show how often that has happened.
What should I do if a thematic AI fund has very little operating history?
Treat the missing history as a limitation rather than filling it with a sector forecast. Review the inception date, available benchmark periods, assets and any closure or liquidation disclosures, and size the position only if the strategy’s shorter record is acceptable to you.
