Before buying a Google Nest speaker or smart display, decide whether you need a screen, confirm that your phone and Wi-Fi can set it up, and check the exact model’s microphone controls, optional sensors, and compatibility with your smart-home devices. Google’s catalog includes Nest Audio and Nest Mini speakers, Nest Hub displays and Nest Hub Max, plus Google Home Speaker (2026); it does not establish which sounds best or offers the best value.
Choose a speaker or a display based on how you’ll use it
A speaker suits voice assistance, music, and room-to-room audio. A display may make more sense if you want a screen, visual responses, or a feature available only on a particular display. Google’s connected-home catalog lists product families but does not compare their audio quality, screen experience, or value, so those factors require model-specific information beyond the catalog.
If synchronized playback in multiple rooms matters, check whether the candidate works with Google speaker groups. Google says compatible speakers and displays can be grouped for synchronized media, with groups created in the Google Home app on a phone or tablet. Confirm the exact model is supported on Google’s speaker-group support page.
Confirm setup requirements before choosing a room
Google Home setup requires a Google Account, home Wi-Fi, and a supported phone or tablet. Google’s listed minimum operating systems are Android 9.0 or later and iOS 17.0 or later. Setup and the Home app are not available on a computer, according to Google’s app requirements.

Check Wi-Fi strength where you plan to place the device, as well as access to a power source. Google’s setup troubleshooting guidance says that if you set up over a 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection, the phone or tablet used for setup must also support 5 GHz.
- Make sure you can access the Google Account and home Wi-Fi that will be used for setup.
- Decide which Google Account and Home setup will own and manage the device, especially if several people share the home.
- For a secondhand device, ask the seller to confirm it can be set up and is not still tied to their account. Check that the power supply and any included accessories are present.
Check the physical microphone switch and privacy features
Google documents a physical microphone switch on its speakers and displays; the Google Home app cannot change the microphone setting. Its microphone instructions place the switch on the back of Nest Audio near the power cord, on the side of Nest Mini, and on the back of Nest displays. Check the exact model before purchase if a hardware mute is important to you.

Displays may also have features involving cameras or sensors, and Google’s privacy information describes some as optional or dependent on configuration. For example, Voice Match and Face Match are optional personalization features on Nest Hub; Nest Hub Max can optionally be used as a Nest Cam; and Nest Hub (2nd gen) can use Sleep Sensing. Review the settings for the precise model and features you intend to use in Google’s privacy information.
Verify compatibility with devices you already own
Do not rely on a general smart-home badge alone if you need a particular function. Google says Matter-enabled devices can be set up through Google Home or a third-party maker’s app. For products labeled Works with Google Home, some may show their status in Home without offering controls there, so the manufacturer’s app may still be needed. Check the functions you care about and the setup path in Google’s third-party setup guidance.
