The FCC added routers produced in a foreign country to its Covered List, which blocks FCC equipment authorization for new covered models unless they receive Conditional Approval from the Department of War (DoW) or the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The action does not stop continued sale of previously authorized models.
What the FCC action actually prohibits
The FCC’s March 23, 2026 fact sheet and public notice added “routers produced in a foreign country” to the agency’s Covered List. The practical effect is that a new covered model cannot receive the FCC equipment authorization required for import, marketing, or sale in the United States, unless an exception applies. The short, accurate description is blocks authorization of new covered foreign-produced models—not a ban on every foreign router or on all router sales.
The FCC says previously authorized router models may continue to be imported, marketed, and sold. Its fact sheet states: “Nor does it prevent retailers from continuing to sell, import, or market router models approved previously through the FCC’s equipment authorization process.” FCC fact sheet, March 23, 2026.
Do you need to replace your current router?
No. The March action does not direct consumers to discard routers already in use. If your router is working and was previously authorized, the listing alone is not a reason to replace it. Keep using it according to its manufacturer’s support and security guidance.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
When choosing a replacement or adding a device, check the exact model’s FCC authorization status rather than relying on the brand name. A manufacturer’s approval does not establish that every router it sells is covered, authorized, or exempt.
How Conditional Approval changes the rule
The Covered List entry excludes routers granted Conditional Approval by DoW or DHS. The status is time-sensitive and can be limited by product or date, so do not assume that every model from a named manufacturer qualifies. Check the current FCC Covered List and controlling notices for the specific product.

A September 2026 WIRED explainer reported approvals for Netgear, Eero, Asus, Arcadyan, Zyxel, Gryphon, SpaceX, Adtran, Calix, Nokia, and Sagemcom. It gave example end dates of October 1, 2027 for Netgear, October 31, 2027 for Eero, and March 6, 2028 for Asus. These are reported examples, not a guarantee of current or universal product coverage; confirm the live FCC status before relying on them. WIRED described the submission process as involving corporate structure, manufacturing and supply-chain disclosures, and a time-bound plan to establish or expand U.S. manufacturing.
What about firmware and hardware changes?
Authorization for a device and authorization for later changes are distinct questions. Limited FCC waivers for certain Class I and Class II permissive changes to covered routers remain in effect according to their terms through January 1, 2029, according to the September 2026 Federal Register summary. WIRED also reported that a waiver originally covering software and firmware updates was extended at least until that date.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
This is not a blanket, permanent right for every manufacturer to make every firmware or hardware change. The applicable waiver, device, type of change, and any later FCC action determine what is allowed. Claims that all existing routers will necessarily become firmware-locked on March 1, 2027 are not supported by the September 2026 reporting and rule summary.
The separate FCC rule taking effect October 13, 2026
A separate final rule, FCC 26-50, was adopted July 22, released July 23, and published in the Federal Register on September 11, 2026. It takes effect October 13, 2026; it did not create or replace the March router listing.

The rule addresses authorization of certain devices containing logic-bearing hardware components produced by an entity identified on the Covered List, where the complete device would itself be barred if produced by that entity. The Federal Register summary distinguishes those producer-based entries from location-based entries such as “routers produced in a foreign country.” The component restriction does not apply to those location-based entries unless the producer is independently listed.
The rule also clarifies that, in specified circumstances, an online marketplace listing can count as distribution for the purpose of selling; marketplaces marketing unauthorized devices can face enforcement. It includes separate marketplace compliance dates of March 1, 2027 and June 1, 2027, as well as clarifications about modifications. These provisions should not be conflated with the March 23 addition to the Covered List. Federal Register summary of FCC 26-50, September 11, 2026.

What to check when buying a router
- Exact model status: Check the model’s authorization and any applicable Conditional Approval on the current FCC Covered List.
- Security support: Review the manufacturer’s stated update support and update process. FCC authorization status does not by itself establish the quality or duration of security support.
- Household fit: Choose for the coverage and capacity your home needs; the regulatory notices do not compare router performance.
The FCC’s rationale is national security. In WIRED’s September 2026 explainer, the agency’s stated concern was that malicious actors had exploited security gaps in foreign-made routers for attacks, disruption, espionage, and intellectual-property theft. That is the agency’s rationale for the action; it does not establish that every foreign-produced router is compromised.
