For batting, record runs, dismissals, average and scoring rate; for bowling, record wickets, runs conceded, average, economy and strike rate. Add fielding and keeping evidence, but treat raw dismissal counts cautiously. These numbers can make your case clearer; they cannot guarantee selection, which also depends on role fit, team balance and observed skills.
Which batting and bowling statistics should you record?
Keep a match-by-match record where possible, then summarize it by season and career. Log the context alongside the figures: format, competition, role, batting position or bowling type, opponent, conditions when known, and date.
Batting
- Innings played, runs, times dismissed and not-outs.
- Batting average and highest score.
- Half-centuries and centuries.
- Balls faced and strike rate where available, especially in limited-overs cricket.
- Batting position and match situation, so an opener’s record is not casually compared with a finisher’s.
Average and scoring rate describe different aspects of batting. Retain both when the scorecard provides the information. The official IPL comparison material includes runs and strike rate and allows seasonal or career views: IPL statistics.
Bowling
- Overs or balls bowled, runs conceded and wickets.
- Bowling average, economy rate and strike rate.
- Best figures, as a useful reference—not as a substitute for the broader record.
Read wickets alongside runs conceded and the format. The ICC explains that economy receives significant credit in its limited-overs ratings, particularly in T20 cricket, so wicket count alone does not capture a bowler’s contribution: ICC player rankings methodology.

Fielding and wicketkeeping
Record catches, stumpings and run-outs attributed on scorecards. Pair those counts with coach feedback or video review notes about reliability, positioning and missed chances. A total depends partly on how many opportunities a player receives. The ICC says it does not rate wicketkeepers from catches and stumpings because chances depend on bowlers, and notes that historical missed-chance details are not accurate: ICC Player Rankings FAQ.
How do you compare cricket statistics fairly?
- Match format and role: Compare players in the same format and similar roles. A T20 strike rate and a multi-day batting average answer different questions; an economy rate also means something different across formats.
- Totals and rates: Use both. Totals show workload and opportunity; averages and rates show efficiency. The IPL comparison tool provides both totals and per-match averages, along with batting and bowling ratios: IPL statistics.
- Time window and sample: Show recent form beside season and career records. A short run can be volatile, while a career total may conceal a change in current form. The ICC ranking method gives weight to recent performances while retaining earlier career evidence: ICC player rankings methodology.
- Competition, opponent and conditions: Compare similar levels of cricket and match volumes. Note opposition strength and scoring conditions when available; the ICC says its ratings account for factors such as match scoring and opponent strength, so performances are not valued in isolation: ICC player rankings methodology.
- Primary and secondary skills: Present the player’s main role first, then relevant secondary contributions. Keep batting and bowling records separate before describing all-round value.
A useful comparison puts the same format, role, competition level and time window side by side, with similar workloads and context. Avoid using one standout match or a brief hot streak as the whole case.

What do selectors look for beyond the numbers?
Statistics can document performance, but they do not establish a universal domestic selection threshold. Selection may also turn on the role a squad needs, team balance, and skills observed by coaches or selectors. Follow the published criteria for your competition when they exist. For example, the Northern Suburbs Junior Cricket Association’s guide discusses role balance and secondary skills for its junior representative selections; it is local guidance, not a rule for domestic cricket everywhere: NSJCA representative cricket.
Do not use ICC international ranking points as a domestic selection target. The ICC’s 2016 explainer described more than 900 points as a supreme achievement, 750-plus as normally enough for the world top ten, and 500-plus as a good, solid rating. How should you maintain the record?
Use official scorecards or a scorebook to keep match details consistent, particularly if digital records are incomplete. A paper scorebook can help preserve basic match records, but it is a record-keeping aid rather than an analysis system or a shortcut to selection.

- Enter each performance soon after the match and retain the original match context.
- Keep separate summaries for each format and primary role.
- Update recent, season and career views without discarding earlier results.
- Flag missing information rather than estimating it.
