The best way to find games like a game you love is to identify why it worked for you, then search for that combination of mechanics, mood, structure and practical fit. “Action,” “RPG” or even the same franchise is usually too broad. Start with one to three reference games, describe their appeal in concrete terms, use several discovery sources, and reject candidates that match only on surface metadata.

This method works for searches such as “games like [a game I love],” “what should I play after [a game],” “similar games,” “games with the same vibe,” “games that play like [a game],” and “what should I play next?”

What should I play next? Start with one to three reference games

Choose games you genuinely enjoyed, not merely games you finished or that reviewers praised. One title gives you a clear starting point; two or three titles reveal the qualities they share. If your examples seem unrelated, look for the common experience rather than averaging them into a vague genre.

Write down the reference games

Record the exact editions or modes that mattered. A solo campaign, a cooperative mode and a competitive mode can feel like entirely different games. Note the platform and whether you played with a controller, mouse and keyboard, handheld controls or local multiplayer, because those details affect the practical fit of recommendations.

Separate the hook from the reputation

Ask what made you keep playing. It may have been a responsive parry window, the satisfaction of building a character, the surprise of discovering a hidden route, a dense story delivered through exploration, short repeatable runs, or a relaxed social routine. “It was acclaimed” is not a useful search signal; “deliberate melee combat with frequent build choices and compact levels” is.

How do I turn a favorite game’s appeal into useful search terms?

Describe the game across several dimensions before opening a recommendation tool. The goal is a small vocabulary of one broad genre plus two or three specific signals, not a long list of every feature the game contains.

Dimension Questions to answer Useful search language
Core loop What do you do repeatedly from minute to minute? Parry-focused combat, stealth takedowns, deck-building runs, investigation, base building
Structure How is progress arranged? Linear campaign, mission-based, open world, roguelike runs, sandbox, episodic
Feel What is the pace and emotional pressure? Fast and aggressive, deliberate and tense, cozy, bleak, humorous, suspenseful
Story-to-play balance What carries the appeal? Story-heavy, systems-first, exploration-led, mastery-focused, environmental storytelling
Difficulty curve How does the game challenge you? Punishing retries, forgiving checkpoints, adjustable difficulty, gradual mastery
Presentation Which sensory or viewpoint choices matter? Isometric camera, first-person immersion, stylized art, orchestral atmosphere, compact arenas
Social format How do you play with others? Solo, online co-op, local co-op, competitive multiplayer, drop-in multiplayer
Practical fit What restrictions determine whether you will play? PC, console, handheld, short sessions, accessibility options, age rating

Combine the terms into a sentence that describes the experience. For example: “I want a solo, story-led action game with deliberate melee combat, interconnected levels and a demanding but fair difficulty curve.” That sentence is more useful than “games like an action RPG.”

Choose signals that can actually be compared

Prefer features that appear in store tags, filters or game databases. “Has the same emotional aftertaste” may be important to you, but it is difficult for an algorithm to interpret. Translate it into observable clues such as “quiet exploration between tense encounters,” “melancholy science-fiction setting” or “short sessions with persistent upgrades.” Keep one or two subjective terms, then anchor them with mechanics and structure.

How do I use Steam to find games like a favorite?

Steam is useful for both broad discovery and a focused “more like this” pass. Open the reference game’s store page, inspect its similar-game area and review the tags that describe the experience. Use the tags as hypotheses, not proof that every similarly tagged title will feel right.

Start with the similar-game shelf and tags

Compare the candidates with your written hook. If the game you loved worked because of parries and compact levels, give more weight to those tags than to a broad “action” label. Steam’s documentation explains that tag overlap drives similarity: “The more tags that overlap, the stronger the correlation and recommendation is for that user.” In practice, several meaningful overlapping tags are more informative than one popular genre label.

Use personalized recommendations as a second pass

Steam describes recommendation feeds that can use play history, friends, wishlists and similar games, as well as an interactive recommender based on players with broadly similar habits. These signals can surface games you would not find through a manual tag search. They also reflect your existing library, so check whether the results match the specific hook you wrote down rather than assuming personalization guarantees a fit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apply filters before you browse deeply

Filter for the platform, input method, language, accessibility needs, multiplayer format and release window that matter to you. A recommendation is not useful if it is unavailable on your device or requires a social format you do not want. Save promising candidates, then compare them in a separate shortlist instead of opening dozens of pages without a decision rule.

How can GOG and other storefront recommendations help?

Use a second storefront to broaden the candidate pool and to expose different metadata. GOG documents its Games for You and recommended-tag surfaces, with suggestions influenced by clicked games, confirmed interest, positive feedback and purchases. Its support guidance says, “The more games you buy, the more accurately we can say what you’d like to see.” Treat that as an explanation of how its system improves with signals, not as a promise that every recommendation will be accurate.

When browsing another store, repeat the same check: identify which of your desired mechanics, structure and mood the listing actually supports. A store may classify two games together because they share a genre or setting even when their moment-to-moment play is very different.

Try cross-platform discovery tools for leads

Cross-platform tools can help when your favorite is not on the storefront you normally use. Give Me Something to Play describes combining IGDB data, OpenCritic critic averages and a public Steam game list sent to the browser without being stored. Gamelikely describes recommendations built from Steam player-voted tags and RAWG genres, while Akingames describes IGDB similarity data and shared genres.

These services are lead generators, not final authorities. Verify platform availability, current price, age rating, content warnings, accessibility information and whether the similarity is mechanical or only database-based. A high critic average can identify quality, but it cannot tell you whether the combat rhythm or session length suits you.

How should I compare games that look similar?

Put each candidate beside the reference game on the same axes. This prevents a shallow list in which every title is called “similar” for a different reason.

Comparison axis What to inspect Questions for your shortlist
Core loop Repeated minute-to-minute actions Will I spend most of my time doing the thing I enjoyed, or only occasionally?
Structure Campaign, missions, open world, runs, sandbox or episodes Does progress arrive in the same shape, and does that suit my available time?
Feel Pace, tension, precision and emotional tone Is it fast or deliberate, cozy or stressful, forgiving or punishing?
Story-to-play balance Relative weight of narrative, systems, exploration and mastery Am I looking for more dialogue, more experimentation or more skill practice?
Social format Solo, online co-op, local co-op or competitive play Can I play it in the way I actually intend to play?
Practical fit Platform, price, age, accessibility, availability and session length Can I run it, afford it and continue it comfortably?

Write one sentence for the match and one for the mismatch. For example: “The combat has the same deliberate timing and stamina management, but the campaign is open-world and much longer.” That wording gives you a reason to buy, wait for a sale or remove the game from the list.

How do I reject near-misses deliberately?

A near-miss is a game that looks right in a tag list but fails on the quality that mattered most. Rejecting it is progress: it sharpens your description of what you actually want.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
  • Genre-only match: Remove games that share “RPG” or “action” but not your core loop.
  • Setting-only match: A similar world or art style does not imply similar controls, pacing or progression.
  • Critically acclaimed but wrong difficulty: A celebrated game can be substantially harder, less forgiving or more repetition-heavy than your reference.
  • Story mismatch: If you loved quiet discovery, a dialogue-heavy linear campaign may not deliver the same satisfaction; if you loved character drama, a systems-only sandbox may feel empty.
  • Length mismatch: A 100-hour open world is a poor follow-up when you want compact sessions, even if the combat resembles your favorite.
  • Social mismatch: Do not substitute an online team game for a solo experience unless the social format is part of what you want.
  • Practical mismatch: Remove titles unavailable on your platform, lacking required accessibility features or carrying content warnings you cannot accept.

Keep a short reject list with the reason beside each title. Patterns in those reasons often reveal a missing search term, such as “no forced multiplayer,” “under 20-hour campaign” or “checkpointed progression.”

What if my favorite games are from different genres?

Find the shared activity or emotional rhythm, not the shared label. A strategy game and a detective game might both reward patient information gathering; a platformer and a rhythm game might both demand precise timing; a role-playing game and a management sim might both make you enjoy long-term build decisions.

Use an intersection, not an average

List what each reference gives you, then mark the overlap. If one game supplies exploration and another supplies tense resource management, search for titles that combine those two traits instead of searching for a generic “adventure game.” If there is no meaningful overlap, run two separate searches and compare the results later.

Let the strongest hook lead

Rank your desired qualities as essential, preferred or optional. A candidate that satisfies the essential hook but misses an optional presentation detail is usually a better choice than one that matches the art style while failing the core loop.

  1. Name one to three reference games. Include the mode, platform and edition that shaped your experience.
  2. Write a ten-line appeal profile. Cover core loop, structure, feel, story balance, difficulty, presentation, social format, session length and practical constraints.
  3. Choose three to five search terms. Use one broad genre and two or three specific mechanics, structural traits or moods.
  4. Check the reference game’s similarity shelf. Inspect its tags and candidate games, giving priority to overlapping signals tied to your appeal profile.
  5. Run a personalized recommendation pass. Review Steam or GOG suggestions after considering play history, wishlists, purchases and interest signals.
  6. Search a cross-platform database. Use services that expose IGDB, OpenCritic, Steam-tag or RAWG-based relationships to find candidates outside one storefront.
  7. Build a shortlist of five to ten games. Record the specific match, likely mismatch, platform and any availability or content question.
  8. Verify practical details. Check the current store listing, supported platforms, price, age rating, content warnings, accessibility options and multiplayer requirements.
  9. Apply a reject rule. Remove any game that fails an essential requirement, even if its reviews or tags are strong.
  10. Choose one next game and keep the notes. After playing, update the appeal profile with what proved important and what did not.

What mistakes make “games like” searches less useful?

The most common mistake is treating similarity as a single score. Recommendation systems and databases are combining signals; your job is to decide which signals matter.

  • Searching only the title: “Games like [title]” is a good starting phrase, but add the mechanic or mood that attracted you.
  • Using too many tags: An overconstrained search can hide excellent candidates. Start with a few strong terms, then loosen one constraint at a time.
  • Trusting a critic average as a personal match: Reviews help assess general quality, not your preferred pace, difficulty or social format.
  • Ignoring negative evidence: A warning about long travel sections, mandatory online play or limited accessibility may be decisive even when the feature list looks impressive.
  • Browsing one storefront only: Store algorithms reflect their catalog and metadata. A second storefront or cross-platform tool can expose different leads.
  • Confusing novelty with similarity: If you want the same combat rhythm, a radically different control scheme may not satisfy you just because the setting is fresh.

How do I improve recommendations over time?

Give recommendation systems clearer signals. Wishlist games you would genuinely play, remove titles you know are irrelevant, use positive and negative feedback where available, and keep your tags specific. When a recommendation is wrong, identify the failed dimension rather than simply deciding that the tool is bad.

Also refresh your constraints. A game that fit when you had weekends free may not fit during short evening sessions. Your preferred difficulty, platform, accessibility needs and willingness to play online can change independently of your taste in stories or mechanics.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The reliable approach is therefore a division of labor: storefront algorithms provide breadth, cross-platform tools provide variety, and your appeal profile and reject list provide judgment. That combination is more dependable than searching by genre alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many games should I use as references when searching for similar games?

Start with one title when its appeal is very specific, and use two or three when you want to identify a shared pattern. More examples can blur the result unless you separate essential qualities from optional ones.

Are player tags or critic reviews better for finding my next game?

They answer different questions. Player tags and similarity systems are useful for discovering shared mechanics or structure, while critic reviews help you investigate execution, writing and common drawbacks after a candidate is found.

Can I find similar games that are not available on my usual storefront?

Yes. Cross-platform services that draw on databases such as IGDB, OpenCritic, Steam tags or RAWG can generate leads beyond one store. Confirm the title’s current platform support and availability on the official listing before committing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do when every recommendation feels like a near-miss?

Revisit the appeal profile and identify the single quality all the misses lack. Replace a broad term with a concrete one, such as changing “story-rich” to “environmental storytelling with minimal cutscenes,” then run a new search using that sharper signal.
