Nokia’s AI growth points to a two-sided change in telecom: networks must carry much more AI-generated traffic, while AI-RAN and automation will be used to run those networks more efficiently. Nokia says its AI and Cloud serviceable addressable market reached €17 billion in 2025, up 28% year over year, and forecasts 26% compound annual growth through 2028. That is a market opportunity, not Nokia’s reported AI revenue. The practical result for operators is a new infrastructure program spanning optical transport, data-center interconnect, cloud-native cores, radio access, edge computing, security and power planning. AI-RAN can improve utilization by sharing accelerated computing between radio workloads and AI applications, but deployment still depends on electricity, cooling, interoperability, cybersecurity and a clear decision about where inference runs.
What is Nokia’s AI growth strategy?
Nokia describes an “AI supercycle” strategy focused on accelerating AI and cloud growth, building AI-native networks and future 6G systems, co-innovating with customers and partners, concentrating investment where it can differentiate, and pursuing sustainable returns. Its 2025 annual report puts the company’s AI and Cloud serviceable addressable market at €17 billion in 2025, 28% higher than in 2024, with a forecast 26% CAGR through 2028. Those figures describe the market Nokia can serve across networking and communications products; they should not be read as a separately disclosed AI-product sales total. Nokia’s 2025 annual report is the source for the market sizing and forecast.
The strategy matters to telecom because the addressable market is not limited to servers. It includes optical and IP networks, data-center interconnect, cloud infrastructure, mobile RAN, automation and the software that coordinates distributed workloads. As AI factories and AI-enabled devices expand, operators become transport providers for intense east-west data-center traffic, high-throughput access traffic and latency-sensitive inference at the edge.

Nokia’s public reporting establishes strategic positioning and market exposure, but it does not isolate an AI-product revenue line. Any business case should therefore use the company’s disclosed market opportunity and product announcements as context, then model the operator’s own traffic, power and service economics.

How does AI change telecom traffic and performance requirements?
AI changes traffic in volume, direction and timing. Traditional mobile broadband is dominated by downlink consumption such as video. AI applications add sustained uplink flows from cameras, sensors and devices, rapid exchanges between applications and cloud models, and short latency-sensitive interactions. Nokia describes networks that must transport AI traffic while also using AI to optimize performance, reliability and energy efficiency.
Higher throughput in both directions
Model training and large-scale inference move substantial datasets between users, edge sites and centralized data centers. Industrial vision, robotics and digital-twin systems can send continuous sensor streams upstream, so uplink capacity becomes a design constraint rather than an afterthought. Transport networks need enough headroom for bursts instead of being dimensioned only for average consumer demand.
Lower and more predictable latency
Interactive copilots, autonomous machines and closed-loop industrial controls are sensitive to delay and jitter. A network may have adequate aggregate bandwidth yet still fail an application if packets travel to a distant cloud region and back. This raises the value of local breakout, edge processing, deterministic transport and observability that can identify where latency is introduced.

Distributed processing and data sovereignty
Inference does not always belong in a hyperscale data center. Nokia identifies latency, device limitations and data-sovereignty requirements as reasons to move some inference toward the network edge. Operators therefore need a placement policy that can send a request to a regional edge, an on-premises private-wireless site or a central cloud according to response time, available compute, regulatory location and cost.
Which parts of 5G infrastructure are affected?
AI growth touches every layer between a device and a data-center accelerator. The following map separates the infrastructure work from the application itself.

| Infrastructure layer | AI-driven change | What operators must plan |
|---|---|---|
| Optical and IP transport | More traffic within and between data centers, plus higher uplink demand from sites | Capacity, route diversity, telemetry and efficient interconnection |
| Data-center interconnect | AI factories exchange large datasets and model outputs at high rates | Low-latency links, scalable switching and power-aware expansion |
| 5G core and cloud platform | Network functions become cloud-native and may host distributed inference | Placement, orchestration, lifecycle automation and isolation |
| Radio access network | AI workloads can share accelerated computing with RAN functions in 5G-Advanced and 6G designs | Hardware acceleration, scheduling, fronthaul performance and operational safeguards |
| Edge sites and private wireless | Inference moves closer to devices where latency or sovereignty matters | Local compute, cooling, physical security and reliable backhaul |
| Automation and observability | AI analyzes faults, load and energy use and can recommend or execute changes | Closed-loop controls, audit trails, model governance and human override |
The opportunity is therefore broader than adding a faster radio. An operator that upgrades radios but leaves transport, core placement or edge operations unchanged may not deliver an end-to-end AI service.
What is AI-RAN, and how could it change 5G infrastructure?
AI-RAN combines radio-access workloads with shared, AI-accelerated computing. Nokia’s description covers 5G-Advanced and 6G products using NVIDIA accelerated computing, with the goal of allowing RAN processing and AI applications to use common compute resources. Nokia says this approach can improve resource utilization and reduce total cost of ownership; the benefit depends on workload scheduling, hardware utilization and the operator’s deployment model. Technical details are outlined on Nokia’s AI and RAN page and in its 2025 Form 20-F.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Shared acceleration instead of isolated appliances
Conventional RAN deployments often reserve specialized capacity for radio functions. In an AI-RAN architecture, an accelerated pool can be scheduled across RAN processing and inference or optimization jobs. When radio demand is low, spare capacity may serve AI workloads; when traffic rises, policy can prioritize real-time RAN functions. This is a potential utilization improvement, not a guarantee: strict timing requirements, memory contention and accelerator availability can limit sharing.
AI-native functions in the radio network
AI can be used inside the network to forecast demand, tune parameters, detect anomalies and improve energy efficiency. These functions require trustworthy telemetry, controlled model updates and a safe fallback when a model behaves unexpectedly. Operators should treat automated changes as production controls with testing, approval and rollback, not as an unsupervised software feature.
What AI-RAN does not imply
AI-RAN does not mean every RAN site becomes a general-purpose AI data center, nor does it automatically replace existing radios. Deployment will be incremental, shaped by spectrum, site power, accelerator economics, standards maturity and the availability of software that can run across the chosen hardware.

Should inference run in a central cloud or at the network edge?
There is no universal location. Centralized cloud processing simplifies fleet management and provides large, efficient pools of compute; edge inference reduces round-trip latency, limits backhaul and can keep sensitive data within a required jurisdiction. Most operators will use a policy-based combination.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Decision axis | Centralized cloud | Distributed edge |
|---|---|---|
| Latency | Depends on distance and transport congestion | Shorter path for local applications |
| Compute efficiency | Large pools can improve utilization | Smaller pools risk idle capacity |
| Backhaul | Raw or preprocessed data travels farther | More processing occurs before backhaul |
| Data sovereignty | Requires verified region and access controls | Can keep data on a site or in-country location |
| Operations | Fewer locations to patch and monitor | More sites, physical constraints and failure modes |
| Device limitations | Offloads computation from constrained devices | Can support local decisions when connectivity is intermittent |
A practical placement rule is to keep a workload central when latency is tolerant and utilization benefits dominate, and move it toward the edge when response time, sovereignty or backhaul cost is decisive. The rule should be encoded in orchestration policies so applications can fail over to another location without manual intervention.
How will AI affect network capacity, power use and total cost?
AI can increase capacity efficiency and operating cost at the same time. Better forecasting and automated optimization may let an operator activate resources when needed, reduce overprovisioning and identify failing equipment earlier. Conversely, accelerated computing draws more electricity, produces more heat and can require upgraded cooling and power distribution.
Capacity economics
Operators should model peak uplink and east-west data-center traffic, not only monthly gigabytes. AI services can create synchronized bursts, such as many cameras sending frames to the same inference cluster. Transport upgrades, additional spectrum or denser sites may be required before an AI service can meet its latency target.
Energy and facilities
Accelerators, storage and high-speed switching add electrical load. Edge sites may have less efficient cooling and limited power contracts than large data centers. A credible business case includes energy, cooling, backup power, floor space and maintenance, then compares those recurring costs with the revenue or avoided cost of the service.

Total cost of ownership
Shared AI-RAN compute may lower total ownership cost if utilization rises enough to offset accelerator and integration expenses. Savings can be eroded by proprietary hardware, software licensing, model serving, specialist skills, security controls and the cost of operating many edge locations. Nokia’s claim is a potential architectural benefit, not an independently verified operator-wide saving.
What evidence shows Nokia is positioned to supply this transition?
Nokia reported 408 commercial 5G agreements and more than 1,000 private-wireless customers at year-end 2025. These figures indicate a substantial installed customer base and a route into enterprise and operator deployments, but they do not identify how many customers use AI-RAN or generate AI-specific revenue. The figures and Nokia’s product positioning appear in the company’s 2025 Form 20-F.
For buyers, the relevant question is not simply whether a supplier has 5G contracts. It is whether its radio, transport, core, orchestration and edge products expose compatible interfaces, support the required accelerators and provide lifecycle tools for a mixed environment. Existing private-wireless customers may have a shorter path to pilots because they can define a bounded site, application and data-governance policy, while nationwide consumer networks require broader capacity and resilience planning.
How should an operator plan an AI-network deployment?
A staged plan limits technical and financial risk while producing measurable evidence.

What could slow adoption of AI-RAN and AI-native 5G?
- Power and cooling: constrained sites or grid connections can delay accelerator deployment even when spectrum and fiber are available.
- Accelerated-compute cost: hardware cycles, memory and software support can make a shared platform more expensive than expected at low utilization.
- Interoperability: multi-vendor RAN, cloud and accelerator combinations need tested interfaces, performance validation and clear responsibility for faults.
- Cybersecurity: a compromised model, telemetry feed or orchestration account could alter network behavior or expose sensitive data.
- Operational complexity: distributed inference creates more locations to patch, monitor, secure and recover.
- Standards and governance: 5G-Advanced and 6G capabilities, model controls and data-residency obligations will mature on different schedules.
- Uncertain returns: traffic growth does not automatically produce higher margins; pricing, enterprise demand and utilization determine whether investment pays back.
These constraints mean AI growth is an infrastructure planning issue, not just a software upgrade. Operators should attach every AI use case to a measurable service-level objective and a power-and-cost envelope.

Will AI make 6G a different kind of network?
Nokia positions 5G-Advanced and 6G as platforms for AI-native connectivity rather than merely faster consumer broadband. In that model, sensing, connectivity, compute and automation are coordinated so applications can request a service outcome instead of a fixed bearer alone. The concept remains dependent on standards, product availability and commercial deployment decisions; 6G timelines and capabilities should not be treated as settled features.
The near-term implication is architectural preparation. A 5G network with cloud-native functions, programmable transport, strong telemetry and edge locations can adopt new AI services more readily than a network built from isolated appliances with limited observability.
What does Nokia’s AI growth mean for network buyers now?
It means procurement decisions made for 5G today should account for AI traffic and shared compute tomorrow. Buyers should request workload-level capacity models, accelerator compatibility, energy measurements, data-location controls, open integration points and a tested rollback process. They should also separate claims about market opportunity from evidence of deployed AI revenue or production savings.
Nokia’s disclosed figures support a significant and growing market opportunity, while the infrastructure outcome will be decided by each operator’s traffic mix, geography, power availability, application latency and tolerance for multi-vendor complexity. AI-RAN is best evaluated as one component of an end-to-end architecture that includes transport, cloud, edge, automation and governance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is AI-RAN the same thing as Open RAN?
No. AI-RAN describes how radio workloads and AI-accelerated computing can be combined and scheduled; Open RAN describes openness and interoperability among RAN components and suppliers. An operator can pursue one without fully adopting the other, so procurement documents should evaluate compute architecture and interface requirements separately.
Will AI growth automatically raise mobile-network prices for consumers?
There is no reliable universal answer. Pricing depends on competition, spectrum costs, enterprise demand, regulation and whether operators can improve utilization enough to offset new compute and energy expenses. Network investment may first appear as better service quality or new enterprise products rather than a separate consumer surcharge.
What should a private-wireless customer ask before adding edge inference?
Ask where data is stored during inference, how long it is retained, what happens when the local accelerator fails, and who can approve model updates. Require latency and availability targets measured at the application endpoint, not just at the radio, and define a non-AI fallback for safety-critical operations.
How can an operator tell whether shared AI-RAN compute is saving money?
Track accelerator utilization by RAN and AI workload, energy per processed request, cooling overhead, software and support fees, and the cost of capacity reserved for failover. Compare those measurements with a dedicated-RAN and dedicated-AI baseline over the same traffic period; a lower hardware count alone does not prove a lower total cost.
