Nintendo Switch Online is Nintendo’s paid membership for Switch and Switch 2. A standard membership enables online multiplayer in compatible games, Save Data Cloud backups for supported titles, NES, Super NES and Game Boy libraries, the Nintendo Music mobile app, selected member offers and other online services. Expansion Pack includes all of that plus more classic systems, selected downloadable content and, on Switch 2, select GameCube Classics and upgrade packs. Individual plans cover one Nintendo Account; Family plans cover up to eight accounts. Prices and catalogs below are for the U.S. market and can change.
What does Nintendo Switch Online include?
The standard membership is a bundle of online access, cloud backup and subscription game libraries rather than a single multiplayer pass. Its benefits apply to the Nintendo Account holding the membership, and the same membership can be used on a Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2.

- Online multiplayer: Play compatible Switch games over the internet with friends or other players.
- Save Data Cloud: Back up save data for games that support the feature.
- Nintendo Classics: Subscription access to curated NES, Super NES and Game Boy games, including titles with online functionality.
- Nintendo Music: Access to Nintendo’s smart-device music app at no extra charge.
- Special offers: Nintendo may provide member promotions and selected in-game or merchandise benefits; availability depends on country and offer period.
- Nintendo Switch App features: Compatible games can use invitations and voice chat through the smartphone app. Nintendo restricts that app voice chat to members age 13 and older.
Classic titles and other membership benefits are access rights while the subscription is active. They are not purchases that remain permanently playable after a membership ends.
Do I need Nintendo Switch Online to play games online?
Usually, yes. Online multiplayer in compatible paid Switch games generally requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, although Nintendo’s compatibility information identifies a small number of games with online modes that do not require one.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Check the individual game
Requirements are set by each game. Look at the game’s Nintendo eShop listing, packaging or support information for the online-play requirement before subscribing. A membership does not add online multiplayer to a game that has no online mode, and it does not make an incompatible title supported.
What the membership does not cover
Nintendo Switch Online is separate from buying the game itself. You still need a copy of the title, a Nintendo Account and an internet connection. Some games may also require their own account, software update or publisher service.
Does Nintendo Switch Online include cloud saves?
Save Data Cloud lets a supported game back up its save data online so you can restore progress on a compatible console. Support is determined by title, so the service does not back up every Switch game.
How to use Save Data Cloud
- Connect the console to the internet and sign in to the Nintendo Account with the membership.
- Open System Settings from the HOME Menu.
- Select Data Management, then Save Data Cloud.
- Choose the user and game, then select the option to back up or download the save data.
Menu wording can vary slightly by software and console version. If a game is not listed as supporting Save Data Cloud, Nintendo’s service cannot create a cloud backup for it; use the game’s own transfer or backup method instead.
What to verify before relying on a backup
- Confirm that the exact game supports Save Data Cloud.
- Use the same Nintendo Account on the replacement or second console.
- Allow the console to finish uploading before shutting it down or changing devices.
- For games with unusual save systems, read the title’s support notes because the developer may handle cloud data differently.
Which classic games do you get with Nintendo Switch Online?
Standard membership provides curated libraries for NES, Super NES and Game Boy. The games are available through Nintendo’s subscription applications and can include online features, such as multiplayer or score sharing, when a particular title supports them.
Subscription access is not ownership
You do not buy an individual ROM or permanent license to each classic game. Access is linked to an active membership and to Nintendo’s current catalog. Nintendo can add, remove or change available titles, and the catalog may differ by country.
What controllers and features to expect
Classic applications are designed for Switch controls and may support compatible wireless controllers. Online functionality is title-specific: a game can be playable alone even when another game in the same application supports online multiplayer. Check the game’s details in the application for its available modes.
What does Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack add?
Expansion Pack contains every standard benefit, then adds more classic systems, selected downloadable content and Switch 2-specific benefits. It is the higher-priced tier for members who want those extras rather than merely online play and cloud backup.

Additional classic systems
Expansion Pack adds Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, Virtual Boy and SEGA Genesis libraries. On Nintendo Switch 2, it also includes select GameCube Classics. These remain subscription access, and the exact catalog is subject to Nintendo’s regional listings.
Included DLC
Examples include the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe—Booster Course Pass and Animal Crossing: New Horizons—Happy Home Paradise. You must own the corresponding full game; the membership supplies the downloadable content, not the base game. If Expansion Pack expires, access to the included DLC pauses until the membership is renewed.
Switch 2 upgrade packs
On Switch 2, Nintendo lists select Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Packs as Expansion Pack benefits, including upgrades for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. The eligible console and the underlying game are required.

Does Nintendo Switch Online work on Switch 2?
Yes. Membership is attached to a Nintendo Account, not locked to one generation, so a member can use the service on Switch and Switch 2. The benefit set depends on the console and the game.
Switch 2-only benefits
- GameChat: A Switch 2 feature available with any Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- GameCube Classics: Require a Switch 2 and Expansion Pack.
- Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Packs: The listed upgrades require a Switch 2 and Expansion Pack.
A standard membership still provides the ordinary online-play, cloud-save and classic-library benefits on either console where the game and feature are supported.

Choose standard Individual when
- You are the only person who needs online multiplayer.
- You want Save Data Cloud for supported games and the NES, Super NES and Game Boy libraries.
- You do not need the additional classic systems or included DLC.
Choose standard Family when
- Several Nintendo Accounts need standard benefits.
- You can use one family membership for up to eight accounts instead of buying separate individual subscriptions.
- No one in the group needs Expansion Pack libraries, DLC or Switch 2 upgrade packs.
Choose Expansion Pack Individual when
- You want the Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, Virtual Boy or SEGA Genesis libraries.
- You own Switch 2 and want select GameCube Classics or eligible upgrade packs.
- You already own a game whose included DLC is part of the Expansion Pack catalog.
Choose Expansion Pack Family when
- Multiple accounts need the higher tier’s libraries or DLC.
- The group includes Switch 2 players who want the GameCube and upgrade-pack benefits.
- The $79.99 annual family price is more suitable than separate Expansion Pack Individual memberships.
The largest difference between tiers is not online play or cloud backup; both tiers include those where supported. Expansion Pack’s value comes from its extra classic systems, selected DLC and Switch 2-only additions.

Recommended Free Tools
How do you start using Nintendo Switch Online?
- Create or sign in to a Nintendo Account. Each player who needs an individual benefit must use the account covered by the membership.
- Choose a tier. Select standard or Expansion Pack, then Individual or Family, based on the comparison above.
- Purchase or start the trial. Review the term, renewal setting and market currency before confirming.
- Link the account to the console user. On the HOME Menu, open System Settings, choose Users and confirm the user’s Nintendo Account.
- Launch a compatible game. Use its online mode, then open System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud to check backup support.
- Install the classic applications. Open the Nintendo eShop with the member account and download the Nintendo Switch Online application for the library you want.
- Use the Nintendo Switch App when supported. Follow the compatible game’s instructions for invitations or voice chat; app voice chat is limited to members age 13 and older.
What are the main limitations and common problems?
- Online play is not universal: The game must support online play and require Nintendo Switch Online; a few titles offer online modes without it.
- Cloud saves are title-specific: A game missing from the Save Data Cloud list cannot use that backup service.
- DLC needs the base game: Expansion Pack does not substitute for buying the full game.
- Benefits stop with an expired membership: Subscription libraries and included DLC are access benefits, not permanent purchases.
- Catalogs and offers vary: Country, offer period and Nintendo’s current catalog determine what appears in your account.
- Console generation matters: GameCube Classics and the listed upgrade packs need Switch 2 and Expansion Pack, while standard benefits work across both generations when supported.
If multiplayer fails, first verify that the account has an active membership and that the game’s online mode requires it. If a save will not upload, check the title’s cloud-save eligibility and the console’s internet connection. For a missing classic game or offer, check the eShop region and Nintendo’s current catalog rather than assuming every country has the same selection.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a Nintendo Switch Online membership on both a Switch and a Switch 2?
Yes. The membership follows the Nintendo Account, so you can sign in on either console generation. Console-specific benefits still require the hardware and tier listed for that feature.
Is the Nintendo Switch Online free trial an Expansion Pack trial?
No. Nintendo’s seven-day trial is for the standard Individual membership and excludes Expansion Pack content. Unless canceled, it changes to a one-month auto-renewing membership.
Why can’t I find a particular classic game in my Nintendo Switch Online app?
Classic libraries are curated subscription catalogs, and availability can vary by country. A title may not be offered in your region or may be added or removed as Nintendo updates the catalog.
Does Nintendo Switch Online include Nintendo Music on every device?
Nintendo lists Nintendo Music as a smart-device app benefit. You access it through the supported mobile app with the Nintendo Account that holds the membership.
