A TV’s native resolution is the fixed pixel grid of its panel. To check it, find the TV’s full model number and look up panel resolution or display resolution in the manufacturer’s specifications or manual. An HDMI information banner can show what a connected device is sending, but it does not necessarily reveal the panel’s native resolution.
What native resolution means on a TV
Native resolution describes the number of physical pixels in the TV panel, written as horizontal pixels × vertical pixels. For example, a 4K UHD panel has 3840 × 2160 pixels. The panel has one native resolution, even if the TV accepts several different input formats. RTINGS.com explains the distinction between a panel’s native resolution and the formats a TV can support.
| Common label | Pixel dimensions |
|---|---|
| Full HD, FHD, or 1080p | 1920 × 1080 |
| 4K UHD, UHD, or 2160p | 3840 × 2160 |
| 8K or 4320p | 7680 × 4320 |
These are pixel dimensions; labels such as “4K” and “Full HD” are shorthand. When comparing models or checking a specification, the dimensions are the most precise way to identify resolution. RTINGS.com lists the dimensions and common names for 1080p and 4K UHD.
Native resolution, input signal, and scaling are different
A streaming box, game console, cable box, or computer sends a video signal in a particular format. The TV may accept several formats and scale the picture to fit its panel. A 4K TV can therefore receive a 1080p signal and enlarge it for its 3840 × 2160 panel. Likewise, a game may render internally below 4K while the console outputs a 4K signal after scaling. RTINGS.com describes supported input formats and how they differ from native resolution.
- Panel resolution: the TV’s physical pixel grid.
- Signal resolution: the format arriving from the connected device.
- Rendered or source resolution: the detail produced by the game, video, or other content before any device or TV scaling.
These values can differ. A TV’s info banner is useful for checking the incoming signal, but seeing “4K” there does not prove the panel is native 4K. Check the manufacturer’s panel specification for that.
How to check your TV’s native resolution
- Find the full model number. Check the rear label, the TV’s settings or about screen, or the original paperwork. Include letters and suffixes: models in the same family can differ by screen size or region.
- Open the manufacturer’s support or product page for that exact model. Find its specification sheet or owner’s manual.
- Look for “panel resolution,” “display resolution,” or similar wording. Read the pixel dimensions; 1920 × 1080 is Full HD, 3840 × 2160 is 4K UHD, and 7680 × 4320 is 8K.
- Check the signal separately if needed. Select the relevant HDMI input and open the TV’s signal or information display. The menu wording and location depend on the model and software version, so use the manual if you cannot find it.
Do not mistake a list of accepted HDMI formats for the panel specification. A TV may support a format as an input even though it scales that signal to a different native panel resolution.

What an on-screen resolution reading can—and cannot—tell you
A TV’s information banner can confirm the format it is receiving from an HDMI device. For a more controlled signal check, set a PC to output a chosen format, then view the TV’s information display to see what it receives. That confirms the signal path, not the panel’s physical pixel count. RTINGS.com outlines this distinction and the PC signal-check approach.
When diagnosing a computer or console, keep three stages separate: the resolution at which the game or content is rendered, the resolution the device outputs, and the TV panel’s native resolution. Either the source device or the TV may scale the image between stages.
Does a higher native resolution always look sharper?
Not from every seat or with every source. Screen size and viewing distance affect how much extra detail you can see, and the source needs to contain that detail. A 4K panel can upscale lower-resolution video, but scaling cannot restore detail that was not present in the original source. RTINGS.com discusses how screen size and viewing distance affect the perceived benefit of resolution.
