Yes. A network-attached storage (NAS) can run useful services continuously, not just store backup files, when its operating system supports containers or an installable-app catalog. Home Assistant can run as a standalone Docker container with a restart policy, while Synology Container Manager and QNAP Container Station provide NAS-focused deployment options. TrueNAS lists Jellyfin, Nextcloud, Immich, Plex, Syncthing and Tailscale in its Apps catalog. Those services can cover home automation, media streaming, private cloud storage, photo backup, file synchronization and remote access. The amount you save is personal: add the subscriptions you would actually cancel, subtract hardware, electricity and maintenance costs, and avoid treating “hundreds annually” as a universal result.

Can a NAS really run apps all the time?

A NAS can operate as an always-on home server if it has an application platform, container runtime or both. Instead of launching a program on your laptop, the NAS keeps the service and its data on its own storage, starts it after a reboot and serves it to devices on your network.

Home Assistant’s official Linux documentation describes “Home Assistant Container” as a standalone container-based installation of Home Assistant Core. A Docker restart policy allows the container to return after a restart or failure. Home Assistant also documents deployment through Synology Container Manager and QNAP Container Station, so you do not necessarily need a separate Linux computer.

This is different from simply sharing a folder. File protocols handle documents; containers and app packages provide the runtime, dependencies, network ports and persistent volumes required by an application. The NAS must therefore support the software stack, not merely have spare disk space.

Which subscription-style services can a NAS replace?

The practical candidates are services that keep data in your home and have a self-hosted application. A single NAS can host several, but each adds storage, memory, update and backup responsibilities.

Use case Examples documented for NAS platforms What the service does Main planning issue
Home automation Home Assistant Connects and automates supported smart-home devices from a local server. Device integrations, reliable networking and a persistent configuration volume.
Media streaming Jellyfin, Plex Indexes and streams your own video, music and photo library. CPU or GPU transcoding capacity when a playback device cannot decode the original file.
Private cloud files Nextcloud Provides browser and mobile access to files stored on your NAS. Database storage, user accounts, remote-access security and a recovery plan.
Photo backup Immich Backs up and organizes a personal photo collection. Rapid growth of originals, thumbnails and indexes; plan separate app data and backup space.
Synchronization Syncthing Keeps selected folders synchronized between devices. Conflict handling and clear rules about which copy is authoritative.
Remote access Tailscale Creates private connectivity to reach services without exposing every app directly to the public internet. Identity, device authorization and understanding which services should be reachable remotely.

TrueNAS’s official Apps catalog includes all of the examples in the table except Home Assistant and Roon, which have their own deployment guidance. Plex’s requirements documentation also lists many popular NAS devices, including QNAP and Synology, as compatible with Plex Media Server.

What does container support mean on a NAS?

A container packages an application and much of its software environment so it can run consistently on the NAS operating system. The container itself is replaceable; your settings, media indexes and databases must live in mapped persistent storage outside the disposable container layer.

Docker on a Linux-based NAS

With a Linux-capable NAS, you install Docker or the vendor’s container service, create persistent folders, configure networking and launch the image with a restart policy. Updates normally involve pulling a newer image, stopping the old container, recreating it with the same data mappings and checking the application afterward.

Synology Container Manager

Synology’s Container Manager is the documented route for deploying Home Assistant and other containers on supported models. The important checks are whether your model and operating-system version provide the manager, whether the CPU architecture matches the image and whether the NAS has enough memory for all planned containers.

QNAP Container Station

QNAP Container Station is the corresponding deployment option documented by Home Assistant. Treat it as an application platform rather than a guarantee that every Docker image will work: verify architecture, storage mappings, network requirements and the image maintainer’s instructions.

TrueNAS Apps

TrueNAS exposes a catalog rather than requiring you to assemble every container manually. Catalog availability can change, so check the current listing for the TrueNAS edition and release you run. A catalog entry simplifies installation, but you still own the data layout, credentials, updates and backups.

Which NAS hardware do I need for Docker apps?

Choose the NAS from the heaviest service in your stack, not from the number of drive bays alone. CPU architecture, memory, transcoding capability, SSD options and expansion determine whether an app remains responsive under load.

Requirement Known guidance Why it matters
CPU architecture Roon Server requires a 64-bit x86_64 processor. Images and binaries built for another architecture may not run or may need a compatible build.
Memory Roon Server requires at least 4 GB of RAM. That is a floor for Roon, not a universal recommendation for an entire multi-app stack.
Container runtime Roon Server requires Docker support; Home Assistant documents Docker and NAS container managers. Without a supported runtime or catalog, you cannot deploy these services in the documented way.
Database storage An SSD is highly recommended for Roon’s database. Low-latency storage can improve database-heavy workloads; keep bulk media on capacity drives where appropriate.
Hardware transcoding Specific NAS models and transcoding limits are not stated in the available documentation. Check the exact CPU/GPU and the media server’s current compatibility notes before buying for multiple streams.
Drive bays and redundancy No universal bay count is established. More bays can provide capacity and redundancy, but redundancy is not a backup.
RAM upgrades and SSD slots Model-specific capabilities are not stated. Upgradeability matters if you expect more containers, users or larger indexes later.

For a light stack, prioritize a supported container platform and enough memory for the applications you will actually run. For Roon, the documented x86_64, 4 GB RAM and Docker requirements are non-negotiable, with an SSD strongly preferred for its database. For media serving, identify how many simultaneous users need transcoding; the answer can change the suitable model more than raw storage capacity does.

How do I calculate whether self-hosting saves money?

Calculate your own avoided subscriptions instead of repeating a headline savings claim. The “hundreds annually” figure describes a possible personal total, not a measured average.

  1. List services you would genuinely cancel. Record the current monthly or annual price, region and plan limits for each service.
  2. Separate replacements from additions. A new photo server is not a saving if you would keep the existing cloud plan as a second copy.
  3. Add one-time costs. Include the NAS enclosure, drives, any SSD, memory upgrades, a UPS and accessories.
  4. Estimate recurring costs. Include electricity, replacement drives, paid remote-access options if any, and your time maintaining updates and restores.
  5. Compare over a fixed period. Divide one-time costs across the number of years you expect to use the system, then compare that annualized figure with the subscriptions avoided.

A simple model is: annual net benefit = subscriptions avoided − annual operating costs − (initial hardware cost ÷ expected years of use). Use current prices for your country and plan tier. If you keep a cloud backup for disaster recovery, include it; self-hosting does not eliminate the value of an independent copy.

How do I install and keep a 24/7 NAS app running?

The exact screens differ by vendor, but the workflow is consistent. Start with one low-risk service, document it, and expand only after you can restore its data.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
  1. Verify support. Confirm the NAS operating-system edition, CPU architecture, RAM and available container service. For catalog apps, check that the entry exists for your release.
  2. Plan folders before deployment. Create separate persistent locations for configuration, databases, media and backups. Do not rely on the container’s temporary writable layer.
  3. Install the runtime. Use Docker on a supported Linux installation, Synology Container Manager, QNAP Container Station or the NAS’s Apps catalog.
  4. Deploy the application. Follow the image or catalog instructions, map each required data directory, select the needed ports and set credentials immediately.
  5. Enable automatic restart. Home Assistant’s container guidance uses a restart policy so the service returns after a NAS reboot. Apply the equivalent setting in your platform.
  6. Test locally first. Open the service from a device on the home network, create a test record or upload, restart the container and confirm the data remains.
  7. Harden remote access. Prefer a private overlay such as Tailscale or a properly secured reverse-proxy design over exposing every application port. Use unique passwords and multi-factor authentication where the app supports it.
  8. Document and back up. Record image or package versions, environment settings, port mappings and administrator credentials in a secure location. Back up both application data and the NAS configuration.
  9. Schedule maintenance. Apply NAS, runtime and app updates on a schedule, read release notes for breaking changes and test one service before updating the whole stack.

How do Synology, QNAP, TrueNAS and plain Docker differ?

No platform is universally best. The useful distinction is how much of deployment is packaged for you and how much control you want over containers.

Platform or approach Documented app path Strength Check before committing
Synology NAS Container Manager Vendor-integrated container workflow for supported models. Model compatibility, architecture, RAM and whether the manager is included in your operating-system version.
QNAP NAS Container Station Vendor-integrated deployment route for containers such as Home Assistant. Supported model, image architecture, storage mappings and update procedure.
TrueNAS Apps catalog Catalog includes Jellyfin, Nextcloud, Immich, Plex, Syncthing and Tailscale. Catalog availability for your edition and release, plus backup and migration details.
Generic Linux NAS host Docker directly Maximum control over images, compose files, networking and update timing. Your ability to administer Linux, secure the host and recover from configuration errors.

Compare platforms on container or catalog coverage, CPU architecture, hardware transcoding, RAM capacity and upgradeability, drive bays, SSD support, power draw, update support and backup/restore workflow. The right choice depends on your services and user count, not on a single vendor label.

How do I keep an always-on NAS app reliable and safe?

  • Use separate credentials. Give each service a unique administrator password and remove default accounts or passwords where the software allows.
  • Minimize exposure. Keep management interfaces on the local network and publish only the service that needs remote access.
  • Back up app data, not just shared folders. Databases, keys, configuration files and container definitions are part of the service.
  • Keep at least one independent copy. RAID or mirrored drives help with a disk failure but do not protect against deletion, malware or a damaged NAS.
  • Use a UPS for graceful shutdown. A UPS can give the NAS time to stop containers cleanly during an outage; it does not replace backups.
  • Watch capacity and health. Photo originals, thumbnails, media indexes and logs can grow faster than expected. Set alerts for storage, drive health and failed jobs.
  • Control updates. Pin or record versions when an application is business-critical, and keep a tested rollback or restore path.

What commonly goes wrong with NAS-hosted apps?

Symptom Likely area to inspect Recovery action
App disappears after a restart No restart policy or an uninstalled package. Enable the platform’s restart setting and verify the container definition is saved.
Settings vanish after an update Configuration stored inside the replaceable container layer. Map configuration and database directories to persistent NAS storage, then restore from backup.
App will not start Unsupported CPU architecture, missing image, port conflict or insufficient memory. Check the app log, confirm architecture and free the conflicting port or resources.
Streaming buffers Network limits, unsupported codec or inadequate transcoding capacity. Test direct play, reduce simultaneous streams and verify the NAS hardware against the media server’s requirements.
Remote access fails Overlay-network authorization, firewall or DNS configuration. Test locally first, then validate one network component at a time instead of exposing additional ports.
Recovery takes too long No documented volumes, versions or restore test. Keep a service inventory and perform a test restore before the system is critical.

Is running free apps on a NAS worth it?

It is worthwhile when you value local control, can maintain the system and have services that match your real needs. A container-capable NAS enclosure can consolidate home automation, media, photos, files, synchronization and private remote access, but it shifts responsibility for security, updates, uptime and recovery from a provider to you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with one service, prove that its data survives a restart and restore, then add the next workload. That measured approach gives you the benefits of 24/7 self-hosting without assuming that every subscription, NAS model or app is interchangeable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I run NAS apps without Docker experience?

A vendor Apps catalog or graphical container manager reduces setup work, but you still need to understand storage mappings, credentials, updates and backups. Start with a catalog app and keep a written record of every setting so you can recover without reconstructing the deployment from memory.

Will a NAS still work if the internet goes down?

Services that operate entirely on your local network, such as many home-automation and media tasks, can continue locally. Remote access, cloud integrations, software downloads and some authentication features may wait until connectivity returns.

Do mirrored NAS drives protect my self-hosted apps?

Mirroring can keep an app online after one drive fails, but it does not protect against accidental deletion, ransomware, corruption or a damaged enclosure. Keep a separate, restorable backup of application databases and configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much electricity will an always-on NAS use?

Consumption depends on the enclosure, drives, SSDs, workload and sleep settings; no universal figure applies. Measure the actual system with a plug-in power meter and include that annual cost in your savings calculation.
