Microsoft does not offer one privacy switch that controls every Copilot experience. First identify whether you’re using the Copilot app with a personal Microsoft account, Copilot in Microsoft 365 apps for home, or Copilot with a work or school account. Each has different data practices, settings and, for work accounts, administrator controls.
For personal Copilot, Microsoft says its updated app became available on August 18, 2026; its current privacy guidance is separate from instructions for the previous app. Use the guidance and settings for the product and account you actually use.
Which Microsoft Copilot experience are you using?
Check the account shown in the app or Microsoft 365. A personal Microsoft account and a work or school account are not interchangeable for privacy purposes. The product surface matters too: Copilot in the standalone app, Copilot in Microsoft 365 apps for home, work Copilot Chat and organizational Microsoft 365 Copilot have distinct controls.

These are Microsoft’s published descriptions, not an independent audit of every account or configuration. Work-tenant behavior can depend on licensing, administrator settings, Purview configuration and enabled agents.

Does Copilot use your chats to train AI?
For work or school Copilot Chat, Microsoft Support states: “Your prompts, including any work content you add to the prompt, and Copilot’s responses aren’t used to train foundation models.” Microsoft also says prompts, responses and file contents in Copilot in Microsoft 365 apps for home are not used to train foundation models.
For personal Copilot, don’t infer the answer from those work or home-app statements. Consult the current privacy guidance for the personal app and the controls shown for your account. Training, chat-history storage, saved memory, cross-service personalization and advertising are different data uses; changing one setting should not be treated as changing all the others.
How do you manage personal Copilot privacy settings?
Open the current Microsoft guidance for privacy controls in the Copilot app and follow its instructions for your app version. Microsoft’s updated-app guidance became applicable on August 18, 2026; the previous app has separate instructions. The available controls cover different purposes:

- Saved memories: Manage whether Copilot can save memories about you.
- Shared experiences: Manage the use of Copilot and Microsoft-account activity across Bing, Edge and MSN to inform shared experiences.
- Chat history: Manage saved conversations separately from memory.
- Web search: Manage the web-search feature.
- Personalized ads: Use the advertising control rather than assuming another privacy switch governs ad personalization.
Settings labels and locations can change. Follow the current account-specific instructions rather than relying on steps written for an older app version.
How do you turn off Copilot memory—and remove saved memories?
- In the Copilot app, open Settings and go to Personalization.
- Turn off Saved memories to stop Copilot from saving memories going forward.
- Use the separate memory-management option, such as Manage or Delete, to remove memories already saved.
Turning off Saved memories does not automatically delete existing memories. Deleting memories also does not delete chat history; manage or delete conversations using the separate chat-history control.
What do shared experiences and ad settings change?
Microsoft says personal Copilot conversations and Microsoft-account activity may support shared experiences across Bing, Edge and MSN. The Copilot setting called One shared experience is distinct from the setting for personalized advertising.

Microsoft distinguishes generic ads, which may depend on the current conversation, from personalized ads, which may use chat history, saved memories and other Microsoft data you chose to share. If your goal is to change ad personalization, use the separate advertising control. Turning off memory alone does not manage all the data sources Microsoft describes for personalized ads.
What happens if you turn off Copilot in Microsoft 365 apps for home?
Microsoft identifies two privacy settings that can disable Copilot in the listed Microsoft 365 apps: Experiences that analyze content and All connected experiences. Disabling either can also affect other connected features, so this is a broader trade-off than switching off one Copilot capability.

Can your work administrator see your Copilot chats?
For work or school Copilot Chat, Microsoft says prompts, queries sent to Bing when a prompt triggers a search, and responses are logged and can be viewed by IT administrators through Microsoft search and audit tools. Microsoft 365 Copilot interaction records are handled under organizational commitments; administrators can use Purview and other tools for access, audit and retention.
If you need to know how long your organization retains interactions, who can review them, or which agents and data sources are enabled, ask your IT administrator. A consumer privacy setting does not control your organization’s tenant.

Microsoft says work Copilot presents only information the signed-in user is already permitted to access under existing Microsoft 365 controls. That permission model does not fix content that has been overshared or poorly governed. Microsoft’s administrative guidance calls on organizations to remediate overshared content and manage permissions, sensitivity labels and retention.

Microsoft also says users can control whether Work IQ references their Microsoft 365 work data in the Copilot app when that feature is available. Availability and configuration can vary, so administrators should verify the organization’s current setup.
Is there a universal Copilot chat-retention period?
No single retention duration is established for every Copilot product and account by the current guidance described here. Microsoft has published an 18-month default conversation-history period in personal Copilot FAQ material, but that figure should not be applied to every current experience. Check the retention settings for your particular product or ask your organization about its policy.
