Battle royale, extraction shooter, and arena shooter describe different gameplay loops, not different camera viewpoints. An FPS game is a battle royale when the central goal is to outlast other players or teams; it is an extraction shooter when success means securing loot or objectives and escaping alive; and it is arena-style when the emphasis is immediate combat or an objective in a bounded fighting space.
These labels overlap, and no universal rulebook makes them mutually exclusive. The reliable way to classify a game is to examine its win condition, what leaving the match means, whether equipment persists, how death works, and how the map creates encounters.
FPS is the viewpoint; the other labels describe the match structure
“First-person shooter” (FPS) tells you how the action is presented: you see the world through the character’s eyes and aim weapons from a first-person perspective. It does not tell you whether a match is based on elimination, extraction, respawning, territory control, or another objective.

A title can use an FPS viewpoint while borrowing one of these structures, and a single game can offer several modes with different rules. The labels are useful shorthand, but the actual rules matter more than the marketing category.

For example, Newzoo’s 2022 taxonomy treats Battle Royale as an independent genre rather than placing it inside its Shooter Games category. That illustrates why genre boundaries vary between analysts and publishers. Use the name as a starting point, then check the mechanics described below. Newzoo’s genre report provides that taxonomy context.
What makes a game a battle royale?
The defining success condition: outlast the lobby
A battle royale asks, “Can I remain alive longer than the other players or teams?” Players enter a shared match, gather useful weapons or supplies, and compete until one player or team remains—or until the mode declares a winner through an equivalent final condition.
Epic’s Fortnite documentation defines Battle Royale as a game combining “survival, exploration, and scavenging elements into a last-person-standing game.” Its description also says players can play solo or in small squads of two to four. That is an official example of the pattern, not a requirement that every battle royale use exactly those team sizes. Epic’s Battle Royale documentation

- Deployment: players enter or land in a large shared map.
- Preparation: they search buildings and supply locations for weapons, armor, healing items, ammunition, or other tools.
- Convergence: a shrinking safe area, rising hazards, or another map rule pushes surviving players toward the same space.
- Endgame: remaining players fight until one player or team satisfies the mode’s victory condition.
Not every battle royale uses a literal shrinking circle, but shrinking space is a common way to prevent players from avoiding one another indefinitely. PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS describes its official overview as 100 players landing, looting, and surviving in a shrinking battleground to become the lone survivor. The 100-player figure is PUBG’s current game-specific design description, accessed 13 October 2026; it is not a genre-wide standard. PUBG’s official game overview
What the stakes usually are
The match itself is the main unit of progress. Finding a powerful weapon helps you survive that round, but the defining question remains whether you can stay in the contest until the end. Some games add account progression, unlocks, quests, or cosmetics, yet those systems do not change the basic last-player-or-team-standing loop.

Death normally removes you from the immediate contest, although modern modes may add limited ways to return. Respawn rules therefore cannot identify a battle royale by themselves. They must be considered alongside the overall win condition.
What makes a game an extraction shooter?
The defining success condition: leave with value
An extraction shooter asks, “Can I enter a dangerous session, obtain something valuable or complete an objective, and reach an exit alive?” You may fight other players, avoid them, investigate locations, or deal with computer-controlled threats. The run succeeds when you extract, not simply when you score the most eliminations.
Level Infinite summarizes the central loop as “get in, loot, and get out.” Its 3 November 2022 explainer describes the risk-and-reward structure in which players gather items during a session and try to leave with them. Depending on the game, death can be permanent for that run or can impose another substantial loss. Level Infinite’s extraction-shooter explainer
A run has an entry, middle, and exit
- Enter: choose equipment and deploy into a map with objectives, loot, and threats.
- Risk and gather: search locations, complete contracts or missions, and decide how long to remain. More time can produce more value but also increases exposure to enemies and environmental danger.
- Commit to an exit: move to an extraction point or satisfy the conditions that open one. Reaching the area may reveal your position through sound, visual signals, or timing.
- Extract or lose the run: surviving the departure preserves whatever the game allows you to keep; dying may forfeit carried items, equipment, or progress.
Why persistent loot changes decisions
Extraction games often make collected gear matter beyond the current firefight. A successful exit can add weapons, resources, currency, crafting materials, or mission progress to a future inventory. That creates a decision absent from a purely self-contained round: should you continue searching for a better reward, or leave now with what you already secured?
Persistent progression is common but not mandatory in every title marketed as an extraction game. Likewise, the penalty for death differs. One game may remove everything carried into the session; another may protect selected equipment, offer insurance, or impose a less severe setback. Read the specific rules rather than assuming that “extraction” always means permanent loss.

Extraction does not mean combat is the only activity
The genre can combine firefights with stealth, puzzles, exploration, trading, or environmental hazards. Embark Studios currently calls ARC Raiders a multiplayer “Extraction Adventure,” describing scavenging alongside threats from other Raiders and machines. The wording demonstrates that developers may use a neighboring label when the loop centers on entering, gathering, and escaping. Embark Studios’ game descriptions
Noise, opened containers, defeated enemies, and activated objectives can attract opponents. Map routes therefore become risk calculations: the shortest path may be exposed, while a longer route can preserve supplies and conceal your movement.
What makes a game an arena shooter?
The defining success condition: win a bounded fight or objective
Arena shooter usually means direct combat in a compact, bounded combat space. The match may ask a team to reach a score, capture an area, carry an item, eliminate the opposing team, or win a series of rounds. Respawns, loadouts, movement systems, and objectives vary widely.
Unlike battle royale, an arena match does not generally require the entire lobby to be eliminated before the winner is known. Unlike extraction, a successful exit with persistent loot is not normally the central outcome. The emphasis is getting into the fight quickly and repeatedly contesting the space or objective.
Why the label is less standardized
The sources do not establish one universal definition of “arena shooter.” Treat it as a description of match scale and combat focus, then explain the particular rules. A game can have a large arena, frequent respawns, round-based elimination, or objective play while still using very different pacing and progression systems.

Embark describes THE FINALS as combat in virtual arenas that players can alter, exploit, and destroy. That is a useful arena-space example, but it does not make destruction, three-player teams, or any other specific feature mandatory for all arena shooters. Embark Studios’ descriptions of THE FINALS
Typical arena characteristics
- Bounded maps: combat is concentrated in a designed arena rather than a huge survival map.
- Fast access to action: players usually spawn with a known loadout or reach combat quickly.
- Repeated engagements: respawns or new rounds let players contest the objective again.
- Clear scoring: points, captured zones, delivered items, or round wins determine the result.
A practical test for classifying any FPS mode
When a game uses several systems at once, ask these questions in order. The first answer that describes the mode’s dominant loop is more useful than a single feature such as a shrinking zone or an extraction marker.
- What counts as success? Remaining player or team points to battle royale. Reaching an exit with loot or mission progress points to extraction. Winning a bounded fight or objective points to arena-style play.
- What does leaving mean? In battle royale, leaving normally means being eliminated or winning by survival. In extraction, successfully leaving is itself a major objective and preserves the run’s gains.
- Does what you collect matter later? If carried loot, equipment, or mission rewards feed future sessions, the mode has an extraction-style persistent-stakes layer. That feature alone does not prove the whole game is an extraction shooter.
- How does the map force encounters? A shrinking battleground commonly concentrates battle-royale survivors. An arena keeps combat in a bounded space. An extraction map creates routes between objectives and exits, with risk increasing as you remain longer.
- What does death do? Extraction games can make death costly or permanent for the run. Battle royale modes can also offer conditional returns, so check the actual respawn rules rather than relying on the label.
Hybrid modes: one match can use more than one structure
Modern games frequently combine objectives. A mode can have a battle-royale end condition while inserting an extraction mission, or it can borrow persistent rewards without making extraction the main way to win.
EA’s Battlefield REDSEC guide documents a Battle Royale mode with a “Data Extraction” mission. Squads collect data, deliver it to an extraction drone, and try to stop rivals from taking it. That is an extraction-style objective inside a broader battle royale. The presence of an extraction point does not automatically reclassify the entire mode; classify the overall success condition and the consequences that dominate most matches. EA’s Battlefield REDSEC Battle Royale 101 guide
The same guide describes respawn options that depend on match timing and surviving squadmates. This shows why “no respawns” is not a safe universal definition of battle royale. A mode may allow a limited return early in the match while still ending with a last-team-standing contest.

Extraction variants can also add treasure hunts, puzzles, or objectives beyond ordinary looting. A developer interview about HAWKED discusses those design choices, demonstrating that extraction-style games can broaden the activity mix while retaining the enter-gather-escape structure. Game Developer’s interview on HAWKED
Comparison of the three gameplay loops
| Question | Battle royale | Extraction shooter | Arena shooter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary question | Can I outlast the remaining players or teams? | Can I secure value and leave alive? | Can I win this fight or objective in the arena? |
| Typical map | Large shared battleground; space may shrink | Route-based map with loot, threats, objectives, and exits | Compact bounded combat space |
| Main reward | Winning or placing highly in the current match | Extracted loot, resources, or mission progress for future use | Score, round win, or objective completion |
| What death usually means | Removal from the contest, with mode-specific return options | Possible loss of carried value or run progress; rules vary | Often a respawn or new round, though elimination modes differ |
| Is extraction central? | No; survival is central | Yes; successful departure is a core outcome | No; the fight or objective is central |
| Are labels standardized? | Common shorthand, but details vary | Common loop, with different penalties and activities | Least consistently defined; explain the actual rules |
How map design changes the experience
Battle royale: controlled convergence
A large map gives players room to choose where to land and how aggressively to rotate. A shrinking safe area, limited resources, or audible combat gradually reduces that freedom. Early decisions are about positioning and preparation; late decisions are about cover, timing, and surviving increasingly concentrated encounters.
Extraction: route and exposure management
An extraction map is built around riskier and safer paths between valuable locations and exits. Staying longer may increase the quality or quantity of rewards, but every additional fight can consume ammunition, reveal your position, or create an opportunity for another squad to intercept you. The exit is not merely a boundary; reaching it is often the most vulnerable part of the run.
Arena: readable contest space
Arena maps focus attention on lanes, sightlines, cover, spawn locations, and objective zones. Because the playable area is bounded, designers can tune movement and engagement ranges closely. The result may be fast respawn combat, methodical round play, or objective rotations, but the space is organized for repeated contests rather than long-distance survival and escape.
Common classification mistakes
- Calling every FPS with a shrinking circle a battle royale: the circle is a common mechanism, while the defining feature is the last-player-or-team-standing outcome.
- Calling every game with an extraction point an extraction shooter: an extraction objective can appear inside another mode, as REDSEC demonstrates.
- Assuming extraction always means permanent death: penalties, retained gear, and insurance systems differ by title.
- Defining arena shooter only by map size: the important question is whether direct combat or an objective in a bounded space drives the match.
- Treating FPS as a genre synonym: first-person presentation describes the camera, not the session loop.
- Using a publisher’s label as a complete specification: terms such as “Extraction Adventure” may signal a family resemblance, but the game’s actual success condition determines how it plays.
The simplest way to explain a game to another player
Describe the match in one sentence using its dominant question:
- “You drop into a shared map, gather gear, and try to be the last player or squad alive.”
- “You enter with equipment, search for valuables or complete objectives, then decide when to extract before another player or hazard ends the run.”
- “You spawn into a compact arena and repeatedly fight for score, territory, or another objective.”
That explanation remains accurate even when a title adds missions, vehicles, environmental threats, destructible cover, or limited respawns. The most useful classification is therefore not the label alone, but the loop the player repeats and the consequence attached to success or failure.
