“Kungfupunk” is Phantom Blade Zero’s name for a new visual language that keeps wuxia’s Chinese martial-arts traditions while adding industrial machinery, modern fashion, cyberpunk cues and occult imagery. S-Game founder and game creator Soulframe Liang describes it as a deliberate blend rather than a separate genre. The game remains rooted in kung fu, Chinese cultural storytelling and revenge drama, but its world is filled with mechanical towers, body-bound red strings, bells and other unsettling details that would not belong in a conventional historical wuxia setting.
What does “Kungfupunk” mean in Phantom Blade Zero?
The official spelling is Kungfupunk, written as one word in PlayStation’s announcement. Interviews also use “kung fu punk.” Liang’s definition is straightforward: traditional kung fu and Chinese culture form the foundation, while steampunk-like machines, cyberpunk references, contemporary fashion and occult art change the setting’s appearance and mood.
In the official description of Phantom World, Chinese kung fu, intricate machinery and occult arts converge. Liang has said his ambition is for kung fu punk to become as recognizable a concept as cyberpunk or steampunk, while still feeling specifically Chinese rather than like a generic futuristic remix.

How is Phantom Blade Zero different from traditional wuxia?
Phantom Blade Zero does not discard wuxia. It adds an industrial and supernatural surface to wuxia’s existing emotional and martial-arts framework.

| Element | Conventional wuxia | Phantom Blade Zero’s Kungfupunk approach |
|---|---|---|
| Martial-arts base | Heroic schools, weapon mastery and stylized kung fu | The same Chinese martial-arts foundation, expressed through highly choreographed action |
| Cultural setting | Chinese history, folklore and jianghu-inspired societies | Chinese cultural references remain central, but the world is redesigned with machinery and modern styling |
| Technology | Usually limited, historically appropriate or treated as background | Steampunk-like devices, mechanical towers and body-modification imagery are part of the setting |
| Supernatural tone | Often subtle, folkloric or tied to martial-arts myth | Occult symbols and unnerving physical details make the fantasy more overt and visually strange |
| Audience aim | Primarily shaped by Chinese literary and screen traditions | Designed to communicate a Chinese-rooted action style to a worldwide audience |
That makes the game closer to “wuxia plus punk-industrial fantasy” than to a historical wuxia simulation. Its revenge-driven structure and recognizable martial-arts identity remain legible even when the scenery becomes mechanical, gothic or cyberpunk-adjacent.
Why does Liang call it a new visual language rather than a new genre?
Liang presents Kungfupunk as an art direction. The underlying storytelling grammar is still wuxia: skilled fighters, codes of loyalty, personal revenge and a world shaped by martial communities. The punk element changes the materials, silhouettes and atmosphere around those ideas instead of replacing them.
His reference points also show that he treats wuxia as an evolving pop-cultural form. The official announcement places Phantom Blade Zero in a lineage that includes Louis Cha’s wuxia novels, Bruce Lee’s films, and the screen work of Michelle Yeoh and Donnie Yen. Those influences span literature, classic martial-arts cinema and modern global action, so the game’s mixture is intended as continuation rather than rejection.

What does the Kungfupunk world look like?
Liang has highlighted details such as hollowed faces, mechanical towers, bells and red strings attached to bodies. These images suggest a world where technology, ritual and bodily transformation overlap. They are not merely decorative steampunk props: they establish the game’s uneasy tone and distinguish its fantasy from either a straightforward period drama or a standard neon cyberpunk city.
The official description calls Phantom World a place where machines and occult arts coexist with Chinese kung fu. That combination lets the game move between recognizable cultural symbols and deliberately unfamiliar visual inventions.
Is Phantom Blade Zero a wuxia game, a cyberpunk game or a soulslike?
It is best understood as a wuxia action game with Kungfupunk art direction and a demanding, precision-focused combat system. “Cyberpunk” describes some of its visual references, not the whole setting; “soulslike” describes aspects of its map and challenge structure, not its complete identity.

GamesBeat reported that Liang’s Beijing-based team described the project as using a three-dimensional or Souls-like map while pursuing old-fashioned, combo-driven action closer to Ninja Gaiden. The design retains deep parry, dodge and combo options. The official announcement describes a semi-open world made from multiple handcrafted maps rather than one enormous continuous map.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCombat animation is another point of distinction. Action director Kenji Tanigaki demonstrates the moves, which are then recreated through handcrafted animation because ordinary motion capture could not capture them adequately. That production choice supports the exaggerated speed and precision associated with wuxia cinema.
Who is Liang Qiwei, also called Soulframe Liang?
English-language coverage identifies Soulframe Liang as S-Game’s founder and chief executive, as well as Phantom Blade Zero’s creator or director. “Liang Qiwei” is the Chinese form used in some references. The available statements do not establish “producer” as a separately verified title, so describing him as the game’s creator and S-Game founder is more precise.
