Microsoft Windows App connects you to Windows desktops and apps hosted elsewhere; it does not install or run arbitrary Windows programs locally on your device. You need an available remote resource—often one assigned by your organization—and the right account to use it.
What Windows App does
Windows App is a remote access client: it brings supported Windows resources into one place so you can connect from another device. Microsoft Learn describes it as connecting users remotely to Windows devices and apps from Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365 Cloud PCs, Microsoft Dev Box, Remote Desktop Services, and PCs. Microsoft’s Windows App overview explains the services and connection types.
The distinction matters: Windows App is the connection software, not the Windows desktop, cloud service, or application itself. Installing it does not create a Cloud PC, provide a Windows license, or grant access to a company desktop. The remote environment must already exist and be reachable.
Which platforms and connections it supports
Microsoft’s current overview lists Windows, macOS, iOS and iPadOS, Android and Chrome OS, web browsers, and Meta Quest as platforms for Windows App. A desktop or laptop browser can be useful when you cannot install a client, but browser access is not available for every connection type.

Compatibility can change, and platform support is not uniform. Check Microsoft’s current connection and platform overview for the exact device and service you plan to use.
What you need before connecting
- A provisioned resource: An administrator or service owner must make the desktop, app, Cloud PC, or Dev Box available to you. For Azure Virtual Desktop, Microsoft specifies an Azure Virtual Desktop account and at least one assigned desktop or app.
- The right account: For the named organizational cloud services, use the work or school account associated with your access. Microsoft says personal Microsoft accounts cannot sign in to Windows App for those services. Supported remote PC connections may work without signing in.
- A supported device and client: Windows requirements include a supported, actively maintained device and supported Windows versions. Windows 10 versions outside mainstream support require enrollment in Extended Security Updates. Requirements vary by service and platform, so consult Microsoft’s setup and connection guidance for your configuration.
Windows App can support multiple accounts, but switching accounts does not grant access to resources that have not been assigned to them.

How to get started
- Confirm access with your organization. Ask which service hosts your Windows desktop or app and which work or school account to use. If you are connecting to a remote PC, confirm that remote access is configured and that you have the required connection details.
- Choose a supported client or browser. Install Windows App for your platform or use a desktop browser where the service supports browser access. Do not assume a browser or mobile client supports every resource type.
- Sign in and select the assigned resource. Use the account tied to your organization’s access, then open the desktop or app made available to you. If nothing appears, contact the administrator who provisions the resource.

Features vary by device and service
Microsoft lists features such as multiple monitors, custom and dynamic resolution and scaling, device redirection, Microsoft Teams optimizations, favorites, and multiple-account switching. Device redirection can include webcams, audio, storage, and printers. Availability depends on both the client platform and the remote service; a feature listed for one combination may not work in another.

For a specific setup, use Microsoft’s live Windows App feature comparison and select the relevant service. The comparison is more useful than treating Windows App as having one universal feature set.

“New” refers to its launch as a generally available client, not a 2026 release. Microsoft’s Azure Virtual Desktop release notes say that in September 2024 Windows App became generally available on Windows, macOS, iOS, iPadOS, and web browsers, while Android was then in preview. Microsoft’s current overview now lists additional platforms, including Android/Chrome OS and Meta Quest. Windows App is part of Microsoft’s client transition for accessing services such as Windows 365 and Azure Virtual Desktop, but it does not make every Remote Desktop product interchangeable. Retirement or transition dates for older clients are specific to the product and service.
