The comparison with Alexa, Cortana, or Siri is about the convenience of asking for information—not voice control or the wider features of a consumer assistant.
What Tuxi does—and what the assistant comparison means
Tuxi is described as a shell utility: you run the tuxi command followed by a text query. It searches Google and returns a result the script selects as the most relevant when there are multiple matches. It is not described as a smart speaker or a voice-activated assistant.
The project-owner portfolio identifies Suraj Kushwah as the BugsWriter founder and describes Tuxi as a shell-based CLI assistant for Linux automation and power users (BugsWriter). A technology article provides the usage and setup details summarized here (It’s FOSS coverage of Tuxi).
How Tuxi gets an answer
The documented workflow is straightforward: enter a query, let Tuxi retrieve Google search results, and have the script return a selected result. The article describes Tuxi as a simple Bash script and lists these command-line tools among its dependencies:

That design makes Tuxi a terminal interface to search results, not evidence of a system that can converse, listen for a wake word, control smart-home devices, or perform the broader range of tasks associated with consumer voice assistants.
Queries you can enter
The documented examples show that queries can be ordinary questions or short search phrases:

The coverage also says Tuxi can handle requests involving lyrics, dates, and math. If a query contains shell-special characters, quote it so the shell passes the intended text to Tuxi. The article says the tool uses the system language by default and that changing languages involves editing the script.
Installation: historical instructions, not verified current setup
The technology article documents three installation routes. These are historical instructions, not confirmation that the commands, dependencies, or project support remain current. Check the project repository for current guidance before installing.
Recommended Free Tools
- Arch Linux and Arch-based distributions: the article says Tuxi was available in the Arch User Repository (AUR).
- Other distributions: it documents using
curlto download the script to/usr/local/bin/tuxi, then making the file executable. - From source: it documents cloning the GitHub repository and running
sudo make install.
The available descriptions do not establish Tuxi’s current release status, supported distributions, or whether the listed dependencies and installation steps still work. The project-owner portfolio confirms its general purpose, but is not a current setup guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Tuxi a replacement for Alexa, Cortana, or Siri?
No—not based on the documented capabilities. Tuxi shares one basic convenience with voice assistants: you can ask for information and get a response. The interaction described for Tuxi is a typed command in a terminal, and its documented role is returning selected Google search results. The comparison does not establish voice input, wake-word activation, smart-home control, or other assistant functions.
