The Astute class is the Royal Navy’s nuclear-powered attack-submarine class. Its reactor supplies the energy to propel the boat and generate electricity; sonar, video-based observation and combat-management systems help its crew understand what is happening around it. Astute boats are conventionally armed, with published capability to carry Spearfish torpedoes and Tomahawk land-attack missiles. They are built for undersea warfare, intelligence gathering, covert strikes and support for UK and allied operations.
What kind of submarine is the Astute class?
Astute is a nuclear-powered, conventionally armed attack submarine. “Nuclear-powered” describes its energy source, not its weapons: Astute does not carry the UK’s Trident nuclear missiles. Those belong to the Vanguard-class boats, which provide the UK’s nuclear deterrent. The Ministry of Defence’s overview of Royal Navy submarine types distinguishes the classes and their roles.
Astute’s role is to operate against threats at sea and support operations ashore. The Ministry of Defence’s 2026 Defence Nuclear Enterprise annual update lists detecting, tracking and destroying enemy forces at sea, covertly striking land targets, protecting task groups, supporting special forces, gathering strategic intelligence, and contributing to UK, NATO and coalition operations.
How does an Astute submarine work?
Reactor power and onboard services
The public explanation of the propulsion principle is straightforward: nuclear fission in a pressurised-water reactor heats water to make steam. The steam drives the engines and also generates electricity. The available official descriptions do not detail the reactor arrangement or drive train, so claims about those internal workings should not be inferred from the basic explanation.

- Paints sold separately unless stated
Nuclear propulsion means the boat does not need to surface to obtain atmospheric oxygen for combustion. The Royal Navy and builder BAE Systems also say Astute boats can produce oxygen and drinking water onboard. These capabilities support extended submerged operation, but they do not make a patrol unlimited: BAE gives a typical dived endurance of 90 days, constrained by food supplies and crew endurance.
Observation and sonar
Astute was the first Royal Navy submarine class without traditional optical periscopes, according to the Navy. Instead, video-based, electro-optical equipment scans the horizon and sends imagery for the crew to assess. The 2010 commissioning announcement described a 360-degree image available for analysis by the commanding officer. This is remote visual observation, rather than a conventional periscope viewed directly through an optical tube.

For underwater sensing, the class uses Sonar 2076, an integrated active- and passive-search suite with hull and towed arrays. The Royal Navy names the system but does not publish a universal detection distance. Sonar performance cannot responsibly be reduced to a guaranteed radius: conditions affect what can be detected, and the public class description supplies no range figure.
From sensor information to decisions
The Royal Navy says the Command and Control System receives information from onboard and external sensors, compiles it into an integrated tactical picture, presents information to command, and manages weapon firing and control. The system is described as a network of systems exchanging data over the Combat System Network; SMCS is identified as the command’s primary combat-management tool. At a high level, sensors collect information, the combat system organizes it, and the crew uses that picture to make operational decisions.

Weapons and their role
Publicly identified weapons are Spearfish heavyweight torpedoes and Tomahawk Land Attack Cruise Missiles. The Royal Navy describes Spearfish as guided by wire or onboard sonar, and Tomahawk as capable of striking land targets far inland; it says a Tomahawk may be retargeted in flight and can return battlefield images. These are published capability descriptions, not evidence that every boat carries the same weapons or loadout on every patrol.
How long can Astute stay submerged?
The Royal Navy and BAE Systems say Astute can circumnavigate the globe while submerged, and the boat can make oxygen and drinking water onboard. BAE’s stated typical dived endurance is 90 days; it identifies food and crew endurance as the practical limits. “Can remain submerged” therefore describes a capability, not a promise that each mission lasts 90 days or that the submarine can stay down indefinitely.

Astute’s size and publicly stated speed
The Royal Navy’s live equipment page lists the class at 97 metres long, 7,400 tonnes displacement and 30 knots. The Ministry of Defence’s 2010 commissioning announcement instead said underwater speeds exceed 20 knots and noted that the top speed is classified. These are source-specific public figures, not a basis for stating an exact maximum speed: the precise top speed is not public.

The Royal Navy’s class page, accessed 4 October 2026, says the class will total seven boats. It lists HMS Astute, Ambush, Artful, Audacious and Anson as in active service, describes Agamemnon as having left Barrow for sea trials, and says Achilles is under construction. The Ministry of Defence’s 2026 annual update says Agamemnon was commissioned in September 2025 and then undertook further testing toward joining the in-service fleet, while construction of Boat 7 continues. These sources use different milestones and status wording; commissioning, testing, joining the in-service fleet and operational readiness are not interchangeable.
