A gas giant is dominated by hydrogen and helium, while an ice giant contains a larger share of heavier volatile materials such as water, ammonia, and methane. In our Solar System, Jupiter and Saturn are gas giants; Uranus and Neptune are ice giants. “Ice” is a compositional term, not a claim that those planets are frozen solid.

How do gas giants and ice giants differ?

The main difference is their overall composition, especially the balance between hydrogen and helium and heavier volatile compounds. Jupiter and Saturn are richer in hydrogen and helium. Uranus and Neptune have a greater proportion of materials such as water, ammonia, and methane, which planetary scientists conventionally call ices because they freeze in the cold outer Solar System.

Comparison Gas giants Ice giants
Solar System examples Jupiter and Saturn Uranus and Neptune
Broad composition Richer in hydrogen and helium Greater share of heavier volatiles, including water, ammonia, and methane
What the name means Gas describes the dominant compositional class; it does not mean every layer is an ordinary gas. Ice refers to volatile compounds classed as ices in cold planetary environments, not a world frozen solid.
Relative size Larger than Uranus and Neptune Smaller than Jupiter and Saturn, but larger than terrestrial planets

These are categories based on bulk composition, not just what a planet looks like from space or which gases are detectable in its upper atmosphere. NASA’s overview describes the distinction and the four Solar System examples in Examining Ice Giants with NASA’s Webb Telescope.

Are Uranus and Neptune made of frozen ice?

No. Water, ammonia, and methane are called ices in this context because they can freeze in the cold regions where planets form. NASA explains that Uranus and Neptune’s interiors are warm enough that these materials are not frozen throughout the planets. The name “ice giant” describes the ingredients and their planetary-science classification, not their present physical state. See NASA’s What Are Neptunian Planets?.

Do ice giants have hydrogen and helium?

Yes. Uranus and Neptune retain hydrogen and helium in their accessible upper atmospheres, along with methane. NASA describes these upper layers above deeper atmospheres containing water, ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, and methane. Methane is associated with the planets’ blue appearance; its presence does not make them gas giants, because the categories refer to overall composition rather than a single atmospheric ingredient.

Are the interiors of Uranus and Neptune fully known?

No. Their deep atmospheres and interiors are difficult to observe directly, so detailed layer descriptions rely substantially on models. NASA’s 2017 account of an ice-giant mission study said relatively little solid ice is thought to remain today and described a massive liquid ocean beneath the clouds as an estimate accounting for about two-thirds of each planet’s total mass. That is a study-era interpretation, not a directly observed ocean or a settled exact interior map. In the same announcement, NASA described Jupiter and Saturn as about 85 percent gas by mass; that too is an approximate figure reported in the 2017 account, not a definition of every gas giant. NASA’s mission-study announcement also quotes science-team co-chair Amy Simon: “We do not know how these planets formed and why they and their moons look the way they do.”

How do size and exploration fit into the distinction?

Uranus and Neptune are smaller than Jupiter and Saturn and intermediate in size between terrestrial planets and the gas giants, but size alone does not define an ice giant. NASA describes Neptune as about four times Earth’s radius and almost 17 times Earth’s mass. These comparisons are listed on NASA’s Neptunian planets explainer.

Uranus and Neptune are also less explored than Jupiter and Saturn. Voyager 2 made brief flybys of Uranus in 1986 and Neptune in 1989. NASA notes that observations with the Webb telescope can help map their atmospheric temperatures and chemistry. That work improves knowledge of their atmospheres, but it does not turn their hidden interiors into directly observed structures. NASA planetary scientist Leigh Fletcher said Webb can “map their atmospheric temperature and chemical structure,” a capability that is difficult to achieve from other facilities. NASA’s Webb article discusses the observations and exploration context.

Does “ice giant” describe every Neptune-like exoplanet?

No. “Neptune-like” may describe an exoplanet’s size or some observed characteristics, but it does not establish that the planet has the same interior as Uranus or Neptune. NASA notes that Neptune-like exoplanets can have varied interiors and hydrogen- and helium-dominated atmospheres. Similarity in size or atmosphere alone is not proof of identical composition. NASA’s Neptunian planets explainer outlines this qualification.
