Proton VPN is PCWorld’s top free VPN for Android in its September 1, 2026 ranking. It is the clearest starting point if you want an uncapped free allowance, but it limits free users’ control over locations and does not guarantee streaming access. Windscribe and PrivadoVPN are more suitable when choosing a location matters and you can accept a monthly data cap. hide.me and AVG Secure round out PCWorld’s five recommendations.

Those are editorial picks, not proof that every service meets your personal privacy standard. The comparisons below date plan details, separate provider claims from secondary-source descriptions, and show what to check before installing any free VPN app.

What is the best free VPN for Android?

For the title-matched list, the answer is Proton VPN. PCWorld named it the best free Android VPN after testing VPN recommendations across PC and Android devices in an article published September 1, 2026. That ranking is PCWorld’s editorial judgment, not an independently reproduced test or a blanket certification that all five services are trustworthy.

Proton is a practical default for people who value an unlimited allowance more than a large menu of countries. TechRadar’s October 19, 2026 comparison lists Proton VPN Free as unlimited with one device connection but no user-selected server choice. Proton’s own Android page says its free plan has no bandwidth or speed limits, while guaranteed streaming is a paid-plan benefit. Check the provider page again before relying on those terms because free tiers can change.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

If your priority is choosing a country or server, Windscribe Free or PrivadoVPN Free may fit better despite their caps. The right choice depends on four questions: how much data you use, whether you need a particular location, how many devices must connect, and whether the feature you want is actually included in the free tier.

Which five free Android VPNs did PCWorld recommend?

PCWorld’s September 1, 2026 article lists five services in this order. The descriptions below deliberately stay within what that ranking establishes; they do not assign unverified privacy or performance advantages to individual providers.

PCWorld position Service What the ranking means What it does not establish
1 Proton VPN PCWorld’s top recommendation for a free Android VPN. It is not proof of a current independent audit covering every privacy claim.
2 PrivadoVPN One of PCWorld’s recommended alternatives. The ranking alone does not specify its current data allowance, locations, or device policy.
3 Windscribe Pro Included among PCWorld’s five picks; the free product is generally identified separately as Windscribe Free in plan comparisons. The PCWorld list does not make every paid-plan feature available at no cost.
4 hide.me Another PCWorld alternative for Android users. The ranking alone does not prove a particular privacy feature or free-tier limit.
5 AVG Secure PCWorld’s fifth listed option. No comparable free-plan figures for this service are supplied by the TechRadar table below.

Read the full ranking in PCWorld’s September 1, 2026 article. Treat “you can trust” in that headline as editorial framing, not as evidence that all five providers have been independently verified to the same standard.

How do the free plans compare on data, locations, and devices?

TechRadar’s October 19, 2026 comparison gives a useful snapshot of free-tier limits. It is a dated secondary-source table, not a promise that the providers’ terms still match it. The list also contains Hotspot Shield Basic instead of AVG Secure, so it is not the same five-service ranking as PCWorld’s.

Service Reported free data Server or country choice Device connections
PrivadoVPN Free 10 GB Yes 1
Proton VPN Free Unlimited No 1
Windscribe Free 15 GB Yes Unlimited
hide.me Free Unlimited Yes 1
Hotspot Shield Basic Unlimited Yes 1

These figures come from TechRadar’s comparison published October 19, 2026. A monthly allowance, reset date, location list, simultaneous-connection rule, and even the name of a free tier can change. Confirm the provider’s current terms at signup and after major app updates.

ToolRadar’s comparison, updated October 24, 2026, independently characterizes Proton’s free Android tier as unlimited-data and ad-free, limited to one device, with no user-selected countries. It describes Windscribe as the capped option with more location choice. Those are editorial descriptions in ToolRadar’s Android comparison, not primary provider documentation.

Rank #2
Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Which free Android VPN has unlimited data?

In TechRadar’s dated table, Proton VPN Free, hide.me Free, and Hotspot Shield Basic are reported as unlimited. Windscribe Free is listed at 15 GB and PrivadoVPN Free at 10 GB. “Unlimited” removes a usage cap in that comparison, but it does not automatically provide unlimited locations, multiple devices, streaming access, or every premium feature.

Proton VPN Free

Proton is the strongest match for someone who wants to leave a VPN connected without watching a monthly data meter. Its free Android page states that the app works on Android 6.0 or later and that the free plan has no bandwidth or speed limits. The same page says streaming services such as Netflix are not guaranteed on the free plan and that guaranteed streaming access is described as a paid-plan benefit. These are provider statements on Proton’s Android page, so verify them again when you install.

hide.me Free

TechRadar reports unlimited data, selectable servers, and one device for hide.me Free. The table does not establish a specific streaming policy, privacy audit, or speed behavior, so do not infer those details from the unlimited allowance alone.

Hotspot Shield Basic

Hotspot Shield Basic appears in TechRadar’s comparison rather than PCWorld’s five-pick list. TechRadar reports unlimited data, server choice, and one device for this tier. Because the two articles use different selections, regard Hotspot Shield as a separate comparison option, not a replacement for AVG Secure in PCWorld’s ranking.

When are Windscribe or PrivadoVPN better choices?

Choose a capped service when selecting a location is more important than having an uncapped allowance. TechRadar reports that Windscribe Free offers 15 GB, selectable servers, and unlimited device connections, while PrivadoVPN Free offers 10 GB, selectable servers, and one device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windscribe Free: more location and device flexibility

Windscribe is the most flexible entry in TechRadar’s table for people who need more than one device connected at once and still want server choice. The trade-off is the 15 GB reported allowance. Heavy video use, large downloads, or leaving the tunnel on all day can consume a capped plan quickly, so check how the provider defines and resets the allowance.

PrivadoVPN Free: selectable locations with a smaller cap

PrivadoVPN Free combines location choice with a 10 GB reported allowance and one device. It can suit occasional travel, public-Wi-Fi sessions, or short periods when you need a specific country, but it offers less headroom than Windscribe in the same table.

What should I choose if I need AVG Secure or another PCWorld pick?

AVG Secure is included in PCWorld’s five recommendations, but the supplied comparison does not provide a current free data allowance, location policy, device count, or streaming rule for it. The same caution applies when you want a detailed advantage for hide.me beyond the TechRadar figures: do not fill missing cells with assumptions.

Use the provider’s current plan page to check the exact free-tier terms, then compare them with your needs. If the page does not clearly state a limit or feature, treat it as “not stated” rather than assuming that the paid version’s capabilities apply to the free app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should I evaluate whether a free VPN is trustworthy?

A list placement cannot answer every privacy question. The material available for these five services does not include primary audit reports or current privacy-policy documents for all of them, so no responsible comparison can certify that every provider meets your standard.

Before creating an account, use this checklist:

  • Read the current privacy policy. Look for the categories of connection, device, account, diagnostic, and payment data the service says it collects, and note the policy’s date.
  • Identify the exact free tier. Confirm whether “free” means unlimited data, a monthly quota, a reduced server list, advertising, one device, or another restriction.
  • Check independent evidence. Look for a clearly identified audit or transparency report and confirm what was examined, when, and whether it covered the Android app or only a narrower system.
  • Review the Android app listing. Check the developer name, update date, permissions, and support links before installing. Use the provider’s official site to reach the store listing rather than relying on an identically named app.
  • Test the feature you actually need. A connection that works for browsing may not provide a particular country, simultaneous device use, or streaming access on the free tier.
  • Recheck after changes. Free-plan limits and privacy documents are volatile. Revisit them after an app update, a plan-page redesign, or a change in the service’s sign-up flow.

Cloudwards’ comparison, updated July 7, 2026, also lists Proton VPN, PrivadoVPN, hide.me, and Windscribe among free Android choices. That additional editorial comparison can help you spot differences in descriptions, but it is still not a substitute for primary evidence about each provider’s current privacy practices. See Cloudwards’ free Android VPN comparison.

How do I install and test a free VPN on Android?

The exact labels vary by Android version and handset, but this process helps you avoid confusing a plan limitation with an app failure.

  1. Check compatibility. Open your phone’s Android-version information in Settings. Proton states that its dedicated Android app supports Android 6.0 or later; compatibility for the other services is not established by the comparison material, so check each provider’s current listing.
  2. Start from the provider’s official site. Follow its link to the Google Play listing and verify the developer name, ratings, update date, and permissions before installing.
  3. Record the free terms. Note the date, allowance, available countries, device count, and any feature exclusions shown during signup. A screenshot or written note gives you a reference if the app changes later.
  4. Install and sign in if required. Use the account flow supplied by the provider. Do not assume that a paid-plan login or subscription is necessary for the free tier unless the provider says so.
  5. Approve Android’s VPN request. Android displays a system confirmation before an app creates a VPN connection. Read the app name in that prompt and approve only the provider you intended to install.
  6. Choose a location when the free plan permits it. If the location list is locked or automatically assigned, that may be an advertised free-tier restriction rather than a malfunction. ToolRadar and TechRadar both describe Proton’s free tier as lacking user-selected countries.
  7. Connect and verify. Confirm that the app reports a live connection and that Android shows its VPN indicator. Open the sites or services you actually use, because a successful connection alone does not prove that a particular location or streaming service will work.
  8. Measure the plan in real use. Watch the allowance meter on capped plans and check how many devices remain connected. On an unlimited plan, still test whether the service delivers the feature you need; unlimited data is not a guarantee of streaming.
  9. Disconnect and retest. Turn the VPN off from the app, confirm that normal connectivity returns, then reconnect. This simple cycle can reveal whether a problem is caused by the VPN session, the network, or the Android device.

What limits or failures should I expect from a free Android VPN?

The app connects, but I cannot choose a country

That behavior is consistent with the reported Proton free-tier limitation. TechRadar lists Proton VPN Free with no server choice, and ToolRadar similarly says users cannot select countries. Do not repeatedly reinstall the app expecting a location picker that the free plan does not provide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The monthly allowance runs out

PrivadoVPN’s reported 10 GB and Windscribe’s reported 15 GB are finite allowances in TechRadar’s October 2026 table. Stop large downloads, check the provider’s stated reset schedule, or move to an uncapped alternative if your usage regularly exceeds the quota. The reset timing is not stated in the comparison, so confirm it with the provider rather than guessing.

A streaming service does not play

Proton explicitly says streaming services are not guaranteed on its free plan and presents guaranteed streaming as a paid-plan benefit. A VPN connection can therefore be working normally even when a streaming app refuses playback. The available material does not establish equivalent guarantees for the other services.

A second phone cannot connect

TechRadar reports one device for Proton VPN Free, PrivadoVPN Free, hide.me Free, and Hotspot Shield Basic, while Windscribe Free is listed with unlimited device connections. Disconnect the first device or check the provider’s current policy before treating the behavior as an Android fault.

The app will not install

First compare your Android version with the provider’s stated requirement. Proton’s page specifies Android 6.0 or later; requirements for the other services are not stated here. If your phone is compatible, verify that you selected the official listing and that Android has enough storage and an up-to-date Play Store.

Are free VPN terms likely to change?

Yes. The dated comparisons already show why you should not merge lists or treat a number as permanent. PCWorld’s title-specific ranking was published September 1, 2026; Cloudwards’ comparison was updated July 7; TechRadar’s table is dated October 19; and ToolRadar’s Android article was updated October 24. Those different dates can produce different product names, limits, and descriptions.

Use the figures as a decision snapshot, not a contract. Before each installation or renewal decision, open the provider’s current free-plan and privacy pages, check the Android app’s release notes, and record any changed allowance, location list, device count, or streaming statement.

Which free VPN is right for each use case?

Your priority Most relevant option from the comparisons Trade-off to verify
Uncapped general use Proton VPN Free Reportedly no user-selected countries and one device; streaming is not guaranteed on the free plan.
Selectable locations with a larger cap Windscribe Free 15 GB reported by TechRadar; confirm the current allowance and reset rules.
Selectable locations with occasional use PrivadoVPN Free 10 GB and one device reported by TechRadar.
Unlimited data plus server choice hide.me Free or Hotspot Shield Basic Both are reported as unlimited with server choice and one device; Hotspot Shield is not in PCWorld’s five picks, and detailed privacy or streaming evidence is not established here.
Following PCWorld’s complete five AVG Secure as the fifth listed alternative The supplied comparisons do not state its current free-tier data, location, device, or streaming terms.

This matrix is a starting point, not a universal winner. Match the plan to your usage, then verify the provider’s current documentation and the Android app before trusting it with sensitive traffic.

What is the final recommendation?

Start with Proton VPN if unlimited free data and Android compatibility are your main requirements, accepting the reported one-device and limited-location trade-offs and the provider’s warning that free streaming is not guaranteed. Pick Windscribe when selectable locations and multiple device connections matter more than a 15 GB cap, or PrivadoVPN when a 10 GB allowance is enough. hide.me, Hotspot Shield Basic, and AVG Secure require closer checking of current terms because the available comparisons do not describe the same set of features for each.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Most importantly, treat “trust” as a decision you verify, not a promise supplied by a ranking headline. Compare the current privacy policy, audit evidence, Android listing, data allowance, location controls, device rules, and the exact feature you need before connecting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does unlimited VPN data mean I can stream anything I want?

No. An unlimited allowance only describes data quantity in the cited plan tables. Proton specifically says streaming is not guaranteed on its free plan, so check the service-specific streaming terms instead of inferring them from “unlimited.”

Can one free VPN account protect several Android phones at once?

The October 2026 comparison lists Windscribe Free with unlimited device connections. Proton VPN Free, PrivadoVPN Free, hide.me Free, and Hotspot Shield Basic are each listed with one device, although those policies can change.

Why do different “best free VPN” lists name different services?

The lists were published by different outlets on different dates and use different editorial criteria. PCWorld includes AVG Secure among five picks, while TechRadar’s table includes Hotspot Shield Basic, so neither list should be treated as a complete copy of the other.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I tell whether a free VPN plan changed after I installed it?

Revisit the provider’s free-plan and privacy pages after app updates or when a connection behaves differently. Compare the displayed allowance, location list, device count, and feature exclusions with the notes you made at installation.

Is a free VPN automatically safer than using no VPN?

No automatic safety conclusion follows from a free label or a ranking position. Review the provider’s current privacy policy and any clearly scoped audit evidence, then decide whether the stated data practices meet your own requirements.
