SrtTrail.txt is a diagnostic log that Windows Startup Repair creates while it checks startup problems and attempts repairs. If you see “Automatic Repair couldn’t repair your PC” alongside a reference to this file, the log is not the failure itself—and its presence alone does not identify the cause.
What SrtTrail.txt is
Windows Startup Repair runs in the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), where it diagnoses certain problems that can prevent Windows from starting. Microsoft explains that the tool creates a log to help users understand startup issues and the repairs it made. Microsoft’s Startup Repair documentation describes it as a built-in recovery tool for problems that stop the operating system from starting.
The log can provide diagnostic context, but seeing SrtTrail.txt in an error message does not prove that a particular component failed. Startup Repair can address several types of startup problem; the file path or message alone is not a complete diagnosis.
Where to find the log
Microsoft documents the file path as %windir%System32LogFilesSrtSrttrail.txt. In a normal Windows session, %windir% usually points to the directory containing the Windows installation.

In WinRE, the Windows installation may have a different drive letter from the one it uses during normal operation. Do not assume it is on C:; identify the volume that contains the Windows installation before looking for the log.
Why Startup Repair creates it
The log records information intended to help explain what Startup Repair found and what it attempted. Microsoft lists examples of problems the tool may address, including missing or damaged system files, corrupted boot configuration data, a damaged master boot record, incompatible drivers, and registry errors. These are examples of repair categories, not a finding that any one of them caused a particular startup failure. Microsoft’s Windows recovery options explains the role of Startup Repair.

- Open WinRE.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Startup Repair and follow the on-screen instructions.
If you cannot reach the built-in recovery options, Microsoft’s Windows boot and recovery guidance also describes using Windows installation media to reach recovery troubleshooting. A USB flash drive can serve as access media for installation or recovery; it is not itself a repair and does not guarantee that Startup Repair will fix the problem.
