It combines a room device, meeting-room controls and, depending on the setup, displays and audio-video equipment. It is designed for the room—not as a substitute for the Teams app on an attendee’s personal computer.
What Microsoft Teams Rooms does
A Teams Room lets people in a physical meeting space join a Teams meeting and use room-oriented controls. Microsoft describes one-touch meeting join, displaying and sharing Teams content, and collaboration with remote attendees as core experiences. The solution is intended for Microsoft Teams; Skype for Business and earlier platforms such as Lync Server are not supported.
What makes up a Teams Room
Microsoft identifies three forms of Teams Rooms systems:
- A Windows compute module connected to a touch console.
- An Android device with a touch console connected over IP or USB.
- A Surface Hub.
A complete setup can also include one or more displays, a camera, microphones and speakers. The exact equipment depends on the room and its layout. Microsoft’s certified hardware list is the place to check whether a particular system or peripheral is currently certified.

Teams Rooms Basic and Pro licenses
Teams Rooms licenses apply to shared room systems, not to an individual’s personal computer or Teams account. Microsoft’s current licensing documentation describes two options:

Microsoft’s commercial page describes Basic as available at no charge with a certified Teams device, subject to the 25-room limit. Check the current licensing documentation and commercial overview for the applicable terms before assigning licenses, since entitlements can change.

What Teams Rooms certification means
Microsoft certification sets hardware design and performance requirements for aspects of the Teams experience, including audio, video, user interface, security and accessibility. It does not evaluate support for every feature or cloud environment. A certified device therefore is not, by itself, proof that every feature or deployment configuration will work; check the specific Microsoft requirements for the features and environment you plan to use.
Certification status and scope can change. Consult Microsoft’s live certified hardware list when choosing a room system or peripheral rather than relying on an older product mention.

How to think about a Teams Rooms setup
When comparing options for a meeting space, consider its size and layout, whether you want a Windows or Android system, the console and peripherals required, the meeting and sharing features people need, and the organization’s device-management requirements. Confirm that the proposed hardware is certified and that the room has the appropriate license. Microsoft positions Basic for core meeting needs and Pro for enhanced room experiences and advanced management.
