Microsoft PowerToys is a free, open-source collection of Windows utilities for customizing your PC and speeding up common tasks. It is a reasonable install for most compatible Windows users when downloaded from Microsoft’s recommended channels and kept updated. That is not an absolute security guarantee: Microsoft’s documentation does not promise that every release is defect-free or provide an independent security audit.
What is Microsoft PowerToys?
PowerToys is a bundle of small utilities rather than one standalone tool. It adds optional features to Windows for tasks such as arranging windows, remapping keys, launching apps, resizing images, and extracting text from images. Microsoft maintains the open-source project, and its utilities and lineup can change over time. See Microsoft’s PowerToys utility overview for the current feature list.
Examples of what it can do
- FancyZones: create window layouts and place apps into them.
- Keyboard Manager: remap keys and keyboard shortcuts.
- PowerToys Run: search for and launch apps, files, and supported plugins.
- PowerRename: rename multiple files at once.
- Awake: keep the computer awake when Windows would otherwise sleep.
- Image Resizer: resize images from File Explorer.
- Text Extractor: copy text recognized from an image on screen.
Other utilities support tasks such as pinning a window above others, previewing files, picking colors, and discovering keyboard shortcuts. You can enable only the tools you want.
Is PowerToys safe to install?
PowerToys is a Microsoft-maintained open-source project distributed through official Microsoft channels, which makes it a more trustworthy choice than an installer from an unfamiliar download site. Still, no software can be described as risk-free based on those facts alone. Microsoft’s official documentation does not claim every release is free from defects or report an independent security audit.

For a typical user, the practical approach is to get PowerToys from the Microsoft Store or the official GitHub releases page linked from Microsoft’s installation instructions, choose the correct installer for the computer, and keep the app current. Avoid enabling administrator mode unless a specific task requires it.
Does PowerToys collect diagnostic data?
PowerToys General settings let you enable or disable diagnostic-data collection, view diagnostic data, and create a bug-report package. Microsoft’s PowerToys documentation does not enumerate every PowerToys-specific data field, so it does not establish a complete inventory of what the app may collect. Does PowerToys need administrator access?
Not as a default setting for everyone. PowerToys may need to run with elevated permissions to interact with another app that is already running as administrator or to change protected settings. Microsoft recommends restarting PowerToys as administrator when a specific need arises, rather than always running it elevated. Its warning is: “It’s not recommended to always run an application as administrator unless absolutely necessary. Running apps as administrator may expose your system to security risks.” — Microsoft Learn, Run PowerToys in Administrator Mode on Windows.

Where should you download PowerToys?
Microsoft recommends installing from GitHub releases or the Microsoft Store. The right method depends on how you manage apps:

For a downloaded executable, Microsoft’s instructions also distinguish per-user and machine-wide installation. Choose the scope that fits how the computer is used; do not select a different processor architecture or scope simply because it appears in the download options.

PowerToys can check for updates while it is running. Its General settings include automatic update downloads, update notifications, and a manual update check. Microsoft says new installations have automatic update downloads enabled by default. Update options may vary with the installation channel, so use the relevant channel’s normal update process as well. Details are in Microsoft’s General settings documentation.

Should you install PowerToys?
PowerToys is worth considering if you use a supported Windows version and want its specific workflow tools—for example, custom window layouts, keyboard remapping, or batch renaming. If you install it, use a Microsoft-recommended source, leave administrator mode off unless needed, review diagnostic-data settings if relevant to you, and keep the app updated. If none of its utilities solve a problem you have, there is no need to install the bundle.
