Google Stitch is a Google Labs experimental tool for turning product ideas and visual references into user-interface designs. Google’s 2026 updates describe an AI-native canvas where you can explore UI directions, iterate with an agent, collaborate in real time, and connect screens into prototypes. It can also hand work off to other tools, though the exact paths and current access terms should be checked in Stitch itself.
What is Google Stitch?
Stitch is Google Labs’ AI-assisted software design canvas for exploring and developing app or website interfaces. Google describes it as a way to create, iterate on, and collaborate around high-fidelity UI using natural-language direction, with images, text, and code available as context. In Google’s March 18, 2026 announcement, Product Manager Rustin Banks called it “an AI-native software design canvas that allows anyone to create, iterate and collaborate on high-fidelity UI from natural language.” That is Google’s product positioning, not an independent assessment of the quality or suitability of its output. The important shift is in the starting point: rather than requiring a finished wireframe, Stitch is presented as a place to begin with a goal, a feeling you want users to have, or an inspiration, then develop possible interface directions with AI assistance.
How does Google Stitch work?
- Describe the idea. Start with the product goal, the intended user experience, or what is inspiring you. Google’s examples frame the prompt around questions such as “What do you want your users to feel?” rather than requiring a detailed screen specification. Google’s March 2026 announcement
- Add context. The canvas can use images, text, and code as context. Google’s earlier introduction also documented prompt and image inputs, including sketches, screenshots, and wireframes. Google Developers’ Stitch introduction
- Explore and steer iterations. Ask the agent to develop or adjust a direction, compare ideas, and refine the interface. Google’s May 2026 update says users can describe changes by text or voice, watch work stream onto the canvas, and steer iterations while the agent is working. Google’s May 2026 update
- Connect screens when a flow matters. Google announced a Prototypes feature in December 2025 for connecting screens into interactions and user flows. The announcement described it as experimental at that time, so confirm what is currently available in your account. Google’s December 2025 announcement
- Hand off the work if needed. Google has described paths involving Figma for refinement, Google AI Studio for shareable links, Google Antigravity for export and backend work, and Netlify for direct web publishing. These are announced workflow options, not a guarantee of a particular current button, file type, or export behavior; verify the available options in the product before planning a handoff. What can you bring into Stitch, and what can you do with the result?
Google’s descriptions cover several kinds of input and output, but they do not establish every current supported format. The table separates documented workflow capabilities from details that still need in-product confirmation.
#1 Best Overall
| Workflow stage | What Google has described | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Starting context | Natural-language intent, images, text, and code; earlier documentation also names sketches, screenshots, and wireframes as image inputs. March 2026 announcement Google Developers’ introduction | Which specific file types and import methods your current Stitch session accepts. |
| Iteration and collaboration | Google says users can explore parallel ideas and use text or voice to steer real-time work on the canvas. March 2026 announcement May 2026 update | Current access, collaboration behavior, and any usage limits. |
| Prototype | A Prototypes feature for connecting screens into interactions and user flows was announced in December 2025 and called experimental then. December 2025 announcement | Whether it is available to you and what interactions it supports now. |
| Handoff | Google has named Figma, Google AI Studio, Google Antigravity, and Netlify as workflow destinations. May 2026 update Google Developers’ introduction | Exact export formats, destination requirements, and whether the path is direct or involves additional steps. |
Can Google Stitch export to Figma?
Google has described pasting or handing work off to Figma for refinement, including in its May 2025 introduction and later workflow descriptions. That supports saying Figma is a named destination, but it does not establish that every Stitch project can be exported as a particular file type or that the current interface has a specific export command. Check the available handoff options and formats in Stitch before relying on them. Google Developers’ Stitch introduction Google’s May 2026 update
What is DESIGN.md?
DESIGN.md is a Markdown format Google describes for expressing design rules in a form that AI agents and other tools can use. The intended purpose is to make design intent—such as what a color is meant to communicate—explicit and portable between Stitch projects and other design or coding tools. On April 21, 2026, Google announced an open-sourced draft specification for the format. Google’s DESIGN.md announcement

Google says agents can use these rules to validate choices against WCAG accessibility rules. That is support for accessibility checking, not a guarantee that Stitch automatically produces a WCAG-compliant design. A team still needs to review the interface and verify accessibility requirements in its implementation.
How Stitch has changed
| Date | What Google announced |
|---|---|
| May 2025 | Stitch was introduced as a Google Labs experiment for creating UI designs and frontend code from text and image inputs, with iteration and handoff options. Google Developers’ announcement |
| December 10, 2025 | Google announced Gemini 3 in Stitch and an experimental Prototypes feature for connecting screens into flows. Google’s announcement |
| March 18, 2026 | Google presented Stitch as an AI-native canvas with a project-aware design agent, an Agent manager for parallel ideas, and a DESIGN.md workflow. Google’s announcement |
| April 21, 2026 | Google announced an open-sourced draft specification for DESIGN.md. Google’s announcement |
| May 19, 2026 | Google announced real-time collaboration and the AI Studio, Antigravity, and Netlify handoff paths, stating that the update was available globally starting that day. That dated rollout statement does not establish access for every user today. Google’s announcement |
What is not established about Stitch today?
Google’s announcements explain intended capabilities and dated rollouts, but the reviewed pages do not settle Stitch’s current pricing, quotas, eligibility, privacy terms, or exact supported export formats as of October 4, 2026. The May 2026 statement that an update was available globally is historical, not confirmation of present-day access. Check the current product and its terms before committing a project to a particular workflow.

Google Labs Code also publishes a stitch-sdk repository that documents programmatic generation and retrieval of screen HTML and screenshots. Its README cautions that the project is not an officially supported Google product, so it should not be treated as proof of a supported consumer-facing API.
