eAccelerator is legacy PHP software that caches compiled scripts and can optimize PHP code. Its project page documents support for PHP 5.4 in a 2012 news entry, so that is historical evidence—not a current compatibility guarantee. For PHP 5.5 and later, PHP includes OPcache, the built-in opcode cache.
What eAccelerator does
eAccelerator is an open-source PHP opcode cache and optimizer, not a hardware device. Rather than repeatedly compiling PHP source files, it stores compiled scripts in shared memory; its project also describes using disk caching for files that do not fit in shared memory. The aim is to reduce compilation overhead. The project claims PHP code may run 1–10 times faster, but that broad claim comes from the project itself and is not accompanied there by a named independent benchmark or test conditions.
Does eAccelerator work with PHP 8?
The available project documentation does not establish PHP 8 compatibility. The project’s dated news entry says its master branch supported PHP 5.4 as of 25 July 2012; it does not provide a current compatibility matrix or establish a current release. Do not treat that old PHP 5.4 note as evidence that eAccelerator works with PHP 8.
For PHP 5.5 and later, the relevant built-in alternative is OPcache. The PHP Manual says OPcache has been bundled with PHP since PHP 5.5.0 and explains that it stores precompiled bytecode in shared memory to avoid repeated loading and parsing. This identifies the built-in option; it does not establish a measured performance comparison with eAccelerator.

Installation and compatibility cautions
eAccelerator’s historical FAQ describes building it as a PHP extension and warns that the compiled extension must match the PHP version. For a PHP-version change, it advises running make clean before phpize. These are old project instructions, not verified steps for a current system; confirm them against the PHP build and operating environment before attempting a build. Project documentation
The same FAQ says that FastCGI was supported while php-cgi and php-cli were not. That statement describes the project’s documentation at the time, not a verified compatibility rule for present-day deployments. It also notes that server or VPS limits can prevent shared-memory segments from being created, so a build alone would not guarantee successful operation. Project documentation

A third-party RPM specification lists PHP development files and standard build tools as build requirements and ties the extension package to the PHP version. That packaging example is not evidence of a maintained package for modern PHP. RPM specification
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is eAccelerator still maintained?
The sources do not establish an official current maintenance status or a latest supported release. The project homepage’s explicit compatibility news is from 2012, while Open Hub reports no commits or contributors for the period 1 July 2025–31 July 2026. Open Hub’s report is a third-party record, not an announcement by the project maintainers. Taken together, these sources provide no basis to rely on eAccelerator for a modern PHP deployment without independently verifying the code, compatibility, and support situation.

Which should you use?
- For PHP 5.5 or later: start with OPcache, which is bundled with PHP according to the PHP Manual.
- For an old system that already uses eAccelerator: check the PHP version, extension build, SAPI, and shared-memory limits before changing or rebuilding anything. The historical FAQ is context, not a current compatibility guarantee.
- For a new or upgraded PHP deployment: do not assume eAccelerator supports the target version. The available project evidence stops at a dated PHP 5.4 note.
- For performance expectations: treat the project’s 1–10× statement as an unverified project claim, not a promised speedup.
