A cloud-native application protection platform (CNAPP) brings multiple cloud-security capabilities into one connected approach. Depending on the product, it can help teams check code and infrastructure definitions before deployment, assess cloud configuration and permissions, protect running workloads, and investigate related risks. CNAPP is a broad platform category, not a fixed checklist: products differ in the capabilities they include and how deeply they cover them.
What does CNAPP stand for?
CNAPP stands for cloud-native application protection platform. CISA uses the term for capabilities that help align visibility and security protections for deployed cloud applications. In practical use, it describes a platform approach that connects security work across cloud application development and operation, rather than one universally standardized product specification.
That distinction matters when you are comparing tools. Two products can both be called CNAPP while differing in which capabilities they include, which environments they cover, and how their features work together. IBM notes that offerings vary. A label alone does not tell you whether a product scans infrastructure-as-code (IaC), analyzes cloud identities, protects Kubernetes, or monitors runtime behavior.

Gartner’s 2024 Market Guide definition, reproduced by Palo Alto Networks, describes CNAPPs as unified, tightly integrated security and compliance capabilities for cloud-native infrastructure and applications. That is one useful description of the category, not a guarantee that every product implements the same feature set.

How does a CNAPP work?
A CNAPP connects information from different parts of a cloud environment so teams can assess risks before and after deployment. The typical flow is to collect signals, check changes and resources, relate findings, and support investigation or remediation. The specific integrations and degree of automation depend on the product.
1. Connect cloud environments and development workflows
A platform may connect to cloud-provider environments and, depending on the offering, development pipelines and workloads. It can collect information about cloud configuration, identities and permissions, software artifacts, and running resources. Connections may use cloud APIs, pipeline integrations, or agent-based or agentless workload collection.
These collection methods are not interchangeable. For example, the fact that a product supports agentless collection does not establish that it sees every workload signal available through an agent. When assessing a platform, check what each integration collects, what it cannot see, and what must be installed or configured in your environment.

Some CNAPP capabilities scan software artifacts and IaC definitions for known vulnerabilities or insecure infrastructure settings before a change reaches production. A security guardrail can flag a policy violation, and some implementations can prevent certain changes from proceeding.
These checks can move security findings closer to the workflow where a developer or cloud engineer can address them. They do not remove the need to validate findings or decide which policies should block deployment: a finding’s usefulness depends on its context and on how the organization configures the guardrail.

3. Assess deployed configuration, identities, and workloads
Once cloud resources are deployed, a platform may assess their configuration and compliance posture, examine identity permissions, and protect running workloads. Workload coverage can include virtual machines, containers, Kubernetes, or serverless functions, but coverage differs by product.
Configuration assessment, identity analysis, and workload protection answer different questions. Is a resource configured in a risky way? Does an identity have more access than it needs? Is a running workload showing a security issue? A CNAPP can bring these views together, but the depth of each view still needs to be checked separately.

4. Correlate findings and decide what to address
Instead of presenting every alert as an isolated item, a platform may relate findings across configuration, permissions, artifacts, and runtime activity. That context can help a team focus on risks it considers more important. The category does not guarantee that every product accurately determines exploitability, assigns the right priority, or provides enough context for a decision.
5. Investigate, fix, and adjust
Teams can use findings to investigate alerts, change code or infrastructure definitions, correct cloud configuration, reduce risky permissions, or apply available controls. Some products support remediation automation. Before enabling it, determine what actions can run automatically, what approvals are available, and how the organization can review or reverse a change.
This connected workflow is the central idea behind CNAPP: capabilities that might otherwise be spread across separate tools can share visibility and context. It is an integration approach, not a promise that an organization can automate every security decision or eliminate manual investigation.

How is CNAPP different from CSPM, CWPP, and CIEM?
CSPM, CWPP, and CIEM describe capability categories focused on different cloud-security problems. CNAPP is the broader platform approach that may combine these capabilities with development-time scanning and other controls. CISA’s TIC 3.0 Cloud Use Case glossary distinguishes the terms, while DoD cloud-security guidance lists several of these capabilities among useful CNAPP functions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Term | What it focuses on | How it can fit into CNAPP |
|---|---|---|
| CSPM Cloud security posture management |
Monitoring cloud environments for vulnerabilities, misconfigurations, and policy or compliance issues. | Checks the security posture of deployed cloud configuration. CISA describes CSPM as monitoring that identifies, alerts on, and mitigates cloud vulnerabilities. |
| CWPP Cloud workload protection platform |
Visibility and protection for workloads such as virtual machines, containers, and serverless functions. | Can contribute workload-focused controls. DoD guidance gives examples including hardening, vulnerability management, host-based segmentation, integrity monitoring, and application allow lists. |
| CIEM Cloud infrastructure entitlement management |
Managing identities and entitlements in cloud and multicloud environments. | Can help teams understand access relationships and identify excessive or risky permissions. |
| IaC and artifact scanning | Checking infrastructure definitions and software artifacts for security issues before deployment. | Extends coverage into development and deployment workflows, before resources or software are running in production. |
| KSPM and runtime detection | Assessing Kubernetes posture or monitoring running environments for threats. | Some offerings include these capabilities, but they are not guaranteed by the CNAPP label. |
These categories can overlap in a product, but they are not interchangeable. A CSPM-focused tool, for example, may assess cloud configuration without providing the same workload protections as a CWPP capability. A CNAPP may bring several categories together, yet the name does not establish which ones are present or how complete their coverage is.
Why do organizations consider using a CNAPP?
Organizations consider CNAPP when security information is fragmented across tools or teams. Code and artifact issues, cloud configuration, permissions, and runtime activity can be difficult to assess as connected parts of one application lifecycle if each lives in a separate workflow.
A platform that brings these views together can give security and development teams a shared way to examine findings and prioritize follow-up. It may also reduce the need to switch among separate tools. Those are reasons to evaluate the approach, not guaranteed outcomes: the category alone does not establish lower costs, fewer breaches, faster remediation, or improved security results.
CNAPP is most relevant to teams that need to manage security across cloud-native applications and services, including their development and deployed environments. The useful question is not simply whether an organization “needs CNAPP,” but whether its current controls leave gaps between the environments, workflows, and teams it must coordinate.

What should you look for in a CNAPP?
Start with your architecture and security workflows, then compare products against those needs. Ask for demonstrations using representative parts of your own environment; a broad feature list does not show how well a particular integration or workflow will work for you.
Coverage across your environment
- Which cloud providers and deployment environments does the product support, including any hybrid or multicloud requirements?
- Which of your needs are covered: code, IaC, artifacts, cloud configuration, identity and entitlements, containers, virtual machines, Kubernetes, or serverless?
- Are the relevant capabilities included in the edition you are evaluating, or do feature boundaries change by edition?
Development and workload integrations
- Does the platform integrate with the development workflows your teams use, and can findings reach developers there?
- For runtime visibility, which collection methods are available? Identify where agents are required, what agentless collection can and cannot see, and the operational overhead of each approach.
- Can it integrate with cloud-native controls, SIEM or XDR systems, ticketing workflows, and identity systems already in use?
Finding context and remediation
- Ask how findings from different sources are correlated and how the product explains priority. Use examples based on your architecture, rather than relying only on a demonstration’s preselected alerts.
- Check whether remediation is advisory, manual, or automated for the controls you need. For automated actions, review approval options and how actions can be configured.
- Understand how teams investigate a finding and trace it to the code, configuration, identity, or workload that needs attention.
Operational and commercial fit
- Review licensing and feature boundaries by edition, data handling, and support obligations.
- Estimate the integration, policy tuning, and workflow changes needed for the environments in scope.
- Decide who owns each finding after it is surfaced: development, cloud operations, security, or another team. A combined platform still needs an agreed process for investigating and fixing issues.
These checks help distinguish a platform’s advertised breadth from the capabilities and integrations your organization can actually use. Because CNAPP is not a fixed feature checklist, document required functions explicitly when comparing products or defining procurement requirements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does CNAPP not tell you?
The acronym alone does not tell you whether a platform covers every cloud provider, workload type, or phase of development. It also does not reveal how well the product correlates findings, how much effort its integrations require, or whether its remediation controls fit your approval process. Those are product- and environment-specific questions.
Nor is CNAPP a substitute for deciding how the organization will respond to security issues. A platform can surface configuration, entitlement, artifact, or runtime concerns, but teams still need to set policies, assign ownership, assess findings, and decide which changes are safe to make.
Microsoft Defender for Cloud is one vendor example discussed in the source material, alongside CNAPP offerings described by Palo Alto Networks and Tenable. These examples illustrate vendor use of the category; they are not a ranking or independent comparison. Product features and bundles can change, so confirm current capabilities and edition details with the vendor when evaluating a specific offering.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is CNAPP a compliance certification?
No. CNAPP is a platform category, not a certification that an organization or application has passed a compliance assessment. A product may include policy or compliance posture capabilities, but the presence of those features does not itself establish compliance.
Can a CNAPP guarantee that a cloud application is secure?
No platform category can establish that outcome by its name alone. CNAPP tools can provide visibility, checks, and controls, but results depend on coverage, configuration, how teams interpret findings, and whether needed fixes are made.
Does CNAPP have one official feature checklist?
The term is used for an integrated set of cloud-security capabilities, but offerings vary. For procurement or architecture planning, define the functions and environments you require instead of treating the CNAPP label as proof that a product includes them.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is agentless CNAPP collection the same as agent-based monitoring?
No. They are different collection approaches, and the signals and coverage available can vary by implementation. Ask a vendor to show what its agentless integration collects for your workload types and where an agent or another integration is needed.
